Whoa, I just popped onto my Twitter feed and noticed that the official Dream Theater twitter posted the following:

This is great. The more people we can draw here, the better.

I always enjoy seeing those threads/posts that say something like "I'm new to DT, but I heard ___ song and loved it! Can you guys recommend which albums to start with?"

That always reminds me of the first time I heard DT.

Yesterday they posted on the DT website: "Dream Theater forums is now exclusively at dreamtheaterforums.org" with a couple of thread suggestions . . .

This is cool. Any mods want to fill in more details? I feel like there is more to this story.

Well, the DT.com forum was pretty abysmal, and really didn't reflect well on the band (hmm, where have I heard the phrase "doesn't reflect well" before?).

Short story: The band and management weren't particularly thrilled with the label's forum at DT.net, so they wanted to shut it down and direct all forum traffic here instead if that was okay with me. For what I think are fairly obvious reasons, I think there is a great mutual benefit, so I of course agreed and worked with them to come up with an appropriate "sound byte" to describe the forum and a few sample DT-related threads to link to.

Unfortunately (or maybe "fortunately," depending on how you look at it), they aren't really into posting on Internet forums very much. But keep in mind that they have been willing to do things by request, such as the live chat that I was able to set up with them. That is about as active as you could ever possibly hope for. How many bands would do something like that for the fans?

Don't worry about it, this forum is a well-oiled moderated machine. I'm sure everything will be maintain at a standard that this forum holds.

Well, this is an excellent development. That other forum is horrible. Not the people, just the forum software. One of the worst and most unintuitive interfaces I've ever seen.

This is a great community here, I think they made a good decision.

Yeah, for me it was the software that was the dealbreaker. I signed up there when they first opened, and hung out for a while, but it was just horrible. No way to track threads, no quick way to go to new posts within a thread, two very basic things that a lot of free software has built-in. It's like someone's high school coding project which got a C minus.

News: Dream Theater Forums: Still "a thing" since 2007.
