Question for those more knowledable Re: Steven Wilson live
« on: December 15, 2014, 04:25:47 PM »
Hey guys, was wondering if someone could help me out.

I'm thinking about seeing Steven Wilson live next year with my dad and a few mates. The question is, will Guthrie Govan be playing live throughout the tour with them?
He's one of the major draws for my dad (and myself actually)

Not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but would be nice to know. Cheers!

He has changed guitarists quite a bit for the touring over the last few years, but I do think Guthrie Govan is considered a permanent member of the band now, since Raven. I'm not sure if Steven has announced the line-up for the tour, but I'm assuming it will be the album line-up, and if so, Guthrie would be part of it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. There is a SW thread for stuff like this, btw.

Side note: seeing Guthrie and Marco playing as The Aristocrats was so fucking awesome!

I would love to see that!
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I'm not sure...from my understanding  Minnemann will be leaving after the NJ date for another tour (not sure if it's Aristocrats or Satriani). Not sure if the NJ date would  be the last date in the US tour.

If it's Aristocrats, then Guthrie would leave also opening a slot for another guitarist within the SW band.

If it's for the Satriani tour, then Guthrie would finish off the SW tour.

Same here. Based on that reply I checked on his site, but there's only one NA date confirmed from what I can see.

Official tour dates have not been posted by either The Aristocrats or Steven Wilson. The NJ date is the only one "confirmed" by Minnemman.

From Marco's FB post on Nov. 30

"Oh and also, since many people asked, yes, I will be playing most of STEVEN WILSON'S US tour as well (also Europe and Latin America), until New Jersey to be precise.
Then our next ARISTOCRATS leg starts in Europe.
Here a pic (taken by Lasse Hoile) at AIR Studios, London, during the recordings for Hand Cannot Erase."

Gotcha. I wish he had been more specific about WHEN that is. The suspense is killing me!

Which of the CDs/DVDs of Steven Wilson performing live would you guys recommend I get? I'd like to get more on his solo stuff and I think that watching him live could help.

Of just his solo work? Well, there's only one full length live CD/DVD of that and it's called Get All You Deserve. There's also the Drive Home CD/DVD EP which has a few live songs but not the whole show.

It's a shame that there is no full release of the Raven tour. The songs translates live in a greatly fashion.

I might be in the minority, but I think too many live CDs/DVDs can be a bad thing. Some artists seem to have a trend of releasing a live album on every tour for every new album, and that's overkill to me. I kinda prefer it when artists go maybe 2-3 albums since the last live album, so that they can really change up the setlist quite a lot for the final thing. I think SW did this great with Arriving Somewhere and Anesthetize. Despite only having a few years between them, the setlists are drastically different and only share a few songs, and they manage to capture two different sides of PT. Get All You Deserve is amazing on so many levels, and despite the Raven-songs being fantastic live, I don't think we need another live album just yet. Maybe after Hand Cannot Erase, then we'd have 2 new studio albums since the previous live album.

Yep, I think it's obvious that he didn't release another live DVD for The Raven tour cause it would have been largely the same songs that were on the first one, with the addition of The Raven tunes.  But if he releases one for the next tour, it will likely be filled with tons of songs from the new album and The Raven, with likely only a handful of ones that were on Get All You Deserve, so it won't have that repetitive feel.
