A Dramatic Choice of Songs
« on: November 24, 2014, 02:34:54 PM »
A new drummer

A new direction

A new attitude.

When they changed drummers, I at first feared that it would cause too many drastic changes in their sound and the way that they do things.
Happily, I turned out to be wrong about that.
They did do things a LITTLE different, though.
There are NO songs over 15 minutes in length, but MOST of them are over the standard "Pop" or "radio-format-friendly" length.

I THINK I know which song will "win."
I'm ALSO predicting which song will be the "runner-up."
AND that the song I'm voting for probably WON'T get very many-if any-other votes!
I can't stop the world from turning around, or the pull of the moon on the tide, but I don't believe that we're in this alone, I believe we're along for the ride...

There is a lot to like here, but BAI is the standout for me.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Breaking All Illusions, though I almost went with Bridges in the Sky. Love both of them.
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

BAI is my favorite DT song since SDOIT. So yeah...

Agreed, again. I love this whole album, especially the final run of 3 songs, but this is the standout track by far. Triumphant return of JMX lyrics, a soaring "La Villa Strangiato"-esque guitar solo, some great vox from the Pirate, and some nice keyboard wizardry, as well as some of the Genie's best drumming on the album.

BTS... Actually kinda surprised to see coming second only to BAI. I like the other songs on the album, but I always thought there was something special about this song, and the Luna Park version just hits the ball out of the park which helped make this song one of my all time favourites.

Not speaking from personal preference, Breaking All Illusions is the only post-MP era song so far to break into the elite class of Dream Theater masterpiece. From a personal standpoint, it's my fourth favorite DT song with my top 3 all being from before MM. This song is brilliant from start to finish, and as I said, is up there with the likes of songs such as A Change of Seasons, Metropolis, Octavarium, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, and Trial of Tears. This song showed the world that the band would be just fine without MP, and it's truly an amazing piece of art.

None of these songs are close to top songs for me, but Bridges in the Sky is still the standout.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

BAI is the clear standout for me.

Not many other standout highs but a solid album and a return to the more melodic side of their writing which got me into them back in 1992.   It was the first DT album in many, many years that I could listen to without needing to hit Skip. On The Backs Of Angels was a strong single too IMO.

This album was a true surprise. I expected it to be below average, but it turned out being my 2nd favorite.

It seems that in ALL of "my" polls-except maybe for "Scenes"-the LONGEST track on each disc is the most popular, according to votes they are getting.

My choice of "On the Backs of Angels" is slogging along at a distant third, with only FIVE votes at this time...

Not surprising considering a lot of fans of DT are prog fans, and  some (if not most) of us generally gravitate towards longer, more epic songs, myself included. I love a good, long epic that takes me on a musical journey over 10-15 minutes, or even longer, and DT is full of songs like that!

The Shaman's Trance
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Outcry...

It's IMO their best song of the MM-era.. Barely above TBP, Outcry it's an incredible beautiful song.. The instrumental is the best part of the song, but also the chorus :chill, the verses and the start are outstanding moments.. The ending is just okay, but the whole thing it's too much enjoyable for my being.. The lyrics are very powerful.. The song has almost everything I like from DT.. Just fills me..

I have to say it: masterpiece.. :hefdaddy
