A lot of people would probably say that FII was when the band "Jumped the Shark."

If so, the SFaM would probably be considered their "comeback."

Man, really, really tough choice between Overture and Strange Deja-Vu, and The Dance of Eternity and One Last Time, but I went with the latter.

Yea, tough.  My problem with ranking songs off the Scenes album is that I look at them all together, like one song.  One giant awesome song :lol

For the poll, I went with tDoE/OLT just based on the strength of tDoE.

Overture/Strange is in my top 3 DT songs for sure. Possibly #1 depending on what day you ask me!

This is the other DT album where I can't pick a clear favourite track. In the past I would always say Beyond This Life, but I've come to appreciate the rest of the album a lot more recently and I really don't know which is my favourite. Despite having no songs from the album in my top 20, it's still my #4 DT record, as the whole really is much greater than the sum of it's parts. Maybe that's why it's so hard for me to pick a favourite, as there's no clear standout song.

I agree.  Or maybe it's too hard to pick because they are ALL standout songs

Fatal Tragedy because, apart from the song being good, that outro is one of my favorite DT moments.

Man, so tough.

Went with Finally Free.

It was between that, or Home. But I like FF just a BIT more.

Fatal Tragedy and Overture/Strange Deja Vu  aren't too far behind.

The album is just that damn good.

I went with Scene 7, but that's only because of TDoE, which is my favorite song on the album.

I don't think they would.  I've never heard that phrase used with this album.  In fact, I've never hear "a lot of people" use that term regarding DT at all.

I wish this poll was by song like all the other polls, since your stated goal was to put all the album winners against each other in a poll.  If the winner of this album is a "scene" with two songs in it, it would seem to have an unfair advantage in that later poll.

But whatever.  TSCO.

Tough one between Finally Free and Home.

FF

FTW

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Never got the love for Home.   A pretty boring song, and my least favorite from the entire album ever since it was released.   The second half of the song saves it.

Beyond This Life is the crown jewel of SFAM.   Every single note is absolute perfection.    Easily a top 5 all time DT song.

It really is a sign of a classic (for me) that I just cannot choose my favourite part. The only parts which would never get my vote are R, TSCO and THE, allthough they work very well within the album and are good pieces.

Voted Fatal Tragedy, but that is really a bit random.

I very easily could have gone for Home or Finally Free. But ended up going with Beyond this Life which I think I like a little bit more and it's got my favourite instrumental section of the album (yes moreso than TDOE) and possibly one of JPs best solos ever so that's an instant win.

I agree that Home is overrated, but nonetheless I still think it's a good song, with a lot of cool sections, plus the Metropolis reprises.
I'm with you on BTL though. Fantastic song, and I miss the off the leash instrumental stuff like that.

BTL is definitely a top 5 song, it just keeps getting better and better, culminating in that amazing solo section. It was also an early DT favorite of mine, as Deep Purple were my favorite band for half a decade, and the organ groove in BTL sounded rather Purple flavored. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqxkfhmWfjQ , https://youtu.be/P5WVqZqw1Es?t=6m16s
