The Controversial Roulette v. And the winner is...
« on: November 18, 2014, 09:38:57 AM »
After some months of waiting and playing some roulettes, it's finally my turn to make you suffer try this.

A bit on my taste of music. After some months wondering, I've reached to the conclusion that I like my music to be unique (nothing I've heard billions of times), smart (made by talented musicians) and either beautiful or badass. You can see now what all my album on my top 50 list have really different moods, atmospheres and overall, they're really different one of each other.

I like *almost* everything. And by almost I mean a) I try to expand my tastes all the time, b) there are so many genres I've never heard and c) I'm not a fan of thrash, speed, power and cheesy prog metal, nor 70's prog rock (although there are some exceptions) nor radio pop music (either modern of 80's). And another thing. I have no problems with old music, while it's good, but there is a problem (at least for me) with this kind of music: vocal lines. They're dreadful or senseless, and I don't feel like singing along them. This also applies to a lot of genres, specially the metal subgenres I mentioned.

My take on harsh vocals: I'm not a big fan of the cookie monster thing, although I'm getting used to it, and I like it when it's well done, like in Opeth. But there are some kind of them, like in BTBAM that are too throat-y and aren't my thing. But I've grown to like harsh vocals and some screams thanks to Devin Townsend and his amazing voice/technique, so don't fear to send me stuff like that.

And finally, I'd prefer if you send me Spotify links. Please, avoid Youtube vids because I'm using a netbook to listen to new music and YT works horrible. You can send me mp3 files though. MEGA will be fine. In case of emergency, just tell me the song and band name.

Will rate your songs in a normal 1-10 scale, and there will be, by now, 8 rounds. Each song will be listened at least two times, more if needed. If you send a grower, please note it. It won't affect the note if I didn't like it at first but ended up loving it, thus be careful with growers.

Rounds and themes (may add or cut some if necessary)
1- Open Round (test yourself and my tastes)
2- Catchy catchy (a really catchy (duh) song or riff or chorus or whatever gets stuck in my mind)
3- SW would cry (make me cry too - just the saddest most depressing song you can imagine)
4- Life is beautiful, isn't it? (and so are the songs on this round)
5- Darkness (I'm sucker for this kind of stuff)
6- Music for Airports (google it and you'll know what is this about)
7- Epicness (doesn't need explanation, I think)
8- Open Round - Reprise (last chance to gather points)

Special points
At the end of this, the one with more points by their song scores may not win the game, but who gathers enough roulette and special points. These will be counted and granted during the game for each round. Here are:
  • A song from an album on my to-listen list (2 points)
  • A song from a genre I haven't heard before (3 points)
  • Theme winner (4 points)
  • Band/album I didn't like, but it turned out to be awesome (artists on the danger zone count for this) (5 points)
  • Song from genre I don't like, but ended liking what you sent anyways (5 points)
These points can be accumulative, it means, one song can enter several of this categories and earn more than one of this special points. And several persons can earn them at the same time. You can use them in every round. Using the last two points is risky, since you may end up with a low score or it might pay off and earn you lots of points.

To-Listen list
I have lots of albums on the list, like 300+ or so. Thus, I've compiled most of them on some collages. Here they are:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4

Participants
1- Nekov
2- Elite
3- mikemangioy
4- Evermind
5- jingle.boy
6- Tom Bombadil
7- Shadow Ninja 2.0
8- Lucien
9- Scorpion
10- Tyrias

Edit: I've cleared some rules regarding the special points and how they work. Please check them. Sorry for all the inconveniences.

Oh, also, no Spotify links from me because it's not available in my country. So please either specify what file hosting would be preferrable for you for sending mp3 files, or give the e-mail to send them.

Well, considering "Song from genre I don't like, but ended liking what you sent anyways (5 points)" maybe it's worth to send him power metal in every round. Gonna think about it. :neverusethis:

From all the speed, power and cheesy prog metal I've heard, those are the only bands I've liked. And just that, I'm not a big fan or something. They wouldn't make my top 50 if I did a v2. And they're not cheesy. Not so much.

Well, considering "Song from genre I don't like, but ended liking what you sent anyways (5 points)" maybe it's worth to send him power metal in every round. Gonna think about it. :neverusethis:
There are some exceptions, but very few. It's a risky move to send songs form those genres, because if I disliked them you would get just a few points. But if they turn out to be great, you may score a 8 or 9, and get 5 additional points in the end.

It must be some pretty obscure stuff, huh? You can just send me the name of the song and I'll look for it.

By the way, I've heard all your submissions at least twice - good stuff guys. I'm just missing on Elite and Tom Bombadil. No hurry, just letting you know. Although, if I get your submissions by the end of the day, results will be ready for Friday. There's still one free spot guys, so call your friends and let them know - they won't want to miss this opportunity.

PS: I've updated the OP with the first part of my to-listen list and another details and info.

Autumn Moonlight - Ghost (Nekov)
Oh, proggy post-rock from my country? Interesting. The beginning felt a bit cheesy (in post-rock terms I mean) but it then evolves into a beautiful piece. I love the atmosphere these guys make and the originality of their approach. The heavy sections is great, and the final crescendo works well. Sadly, the song ends too soon for my tastes. But it'a a gorgeous song anyways. I might buy the album to support them. 8.5/10.

Destrage - Smell You Later Fishy (Mikemangioy)

Definitely the most brutal song of the round. And I didn't expect you to send me such heavy stuff so soon. The brutality here is tremendous, although at times I think it's ironic, like a joke to extreme bands. The snare is like a machine gun, and the singer prefers to sing high and harsh rather than just turning into a cheesy demon. The calm sections were totally unexpected, and wonderful. This duality is well used throughout the song. And then a middle point appears around minute 2 or so. There is no such energy as before, but it's way more active that the calm sections. I love this part. Sadly, till the end it doesn't vary too much. Specially when the Cookie Monster finally appears. This song is on the limit between what I dislike and what not. But hey, I ended up enjoying it anyways. 7/10

Assemblage 23  - The Cruelest Year (Shadow Ninja 2.0)
I have a weakness for well-made pop songs (see Blackfield, Flying Colors, Destiny Potato, DT's Addicted, etc.) and you hit exactly that spot. I love the dreamy atmosphere of this tune, and those sexy synths. It's emotional without being cheesy (yay!) so props for that. The introduction and the synth's riff are amazing, and it gets better from there. Even the ending is great. My only complaint it's that the vocal lines could vary a bit more. I think this genre is called futurepop, right? Never heard of it, so you win the 3 points for that. I'll definitely check this artist. 9.5/10

Peter Tchaikovsky - Symphony 5, Finale (Lucien)
Oh, classical music. I used to love the genre to death some years ago when I started taking piano lessons. I remember the hours in freezing rooms. My cruel ears and tiny hands, destroying timeless tunes. This song has some amazing epic parts, especially at the middle. Sadly, the songs changes from moods and ideas several times and I get lost frequently, making this hard to digest. It's not a bad song, but I prefer Bach or Beethoven when it comes to this genre. 6.5/10.

Pink Floyd - Sorrow (jingle.boy)

Cool, a Floyd song out of the big 4. The atmosphere is great, as always. I prefer the most straight-foward PF, and this song didn't do much for me. It's not bad - I came to appreciate it a bit more when I listened to it sleepy. It would have been better for the Music for Airports round though. 6/10

Sigh - Amnesia (Scorpion)
This was a risky move, Scorp. And a good one indeed. I added this album to my to-listen list just because of the wonderful cover art. It turned out the music is also great. I don't know which is my fav part - when the synths appear, or when so does the violin/sax/harmonica (?). The dark, French atmosphere is a win, definitely. I'm not sure of what to think of growls during calm sections. But whatever, I enjoyed this song. My only complaint is that the ending was awful, it just all disappears into ambient noise. Interesting song anyways. 7.5/10

Pain of Salvation - A Trace of Blood (Evermind)
Remedy Lane used to be on my mp3 long time ago. And then one day I deleted it, along with another albums. It never returned, because I got tired and it wasn't that awesome for me. So Evermind surprised me when he sent this. Such a risky move, dude. But it payed off.
I really liked this song after several spins. The chorus is cool, and so do the build-ups. The emotional impact and the guitar solo, almost entering the cheesy realm. But I still don't like Daniel's voice nor those ugly voice effects and breaths. Just by a small margin, you won a special point for sending a song from the only PoS album I kind of liked. 7/10.

ISIS - Backlit (Tom Bombadil)
Panopticon wasn't my cup of tea when I listened to it some months ago. Thus, I though, maybe this time a song from it would click on me. Sorry dude. the instrumental sections were really nice, post-rock-ish. Sadly, the growls don't convince me. Not because they're bad, but they aren't well used here IMO. The parts when the guitar takes the main role are the best. but just that. This song would have been way better if instrumental. Not my cup of tea, sorry. 5/10

Memento Mori - Kamelot (Tyrias)

Power metal? You guys love risk, don't you? Overall, this is a bipolar song. On one hand, it has an incredible middle section full of win and epic. But, the beginning and the end are awfully cheesy. They kind of remind me of Illumination's Theory last movement, but worse. At a first listen, I like the song much more. But with several spins, it hasn't retained my attention so much, and made me realize how awkward and random the beginning and ending are - because they're disconnected with the rest of the tune. Meh. 6/10.

Leprous - Forced Entry (Elite)
At first, I disliked this song. I had heard Coal some time ago, and it wasn't for me, nope. Thus, I was interested on this album, since some friends of mine have it among their top 10 albums of all time. About the song, in one word: chaotic. It's not the kind of chaos of DT' Deconstruction, but rather a mix of lots of things that make it difficult to digest, thus it took me several spins to appreciate this tune. I was even thinking about giving it a 4 and not giving it a last listening before ranking. So glad I didn't. It starts with a riff that heavily reminds me of Haken's Aquarius. Even some vocal harmonies are very similar of what you find on the British's debut. But it slowly gets better and better, reaching an epic moment around minute 9. I may listen to this album in the future, just to see how it is. But you earned some extra points for this entry. Congrats. 7/10

Round Two: Catchy Catchy
A song which's main appeal is a catchy (duh) riff, or a chorus, or a vocal line, or whatever that gets stuck in my head for all day long. I advise you to look into songs from albums on the to-listen list, specially if you have a low score. Remember, the special point will matter at the end of the game, when they'll be added to you general score. Thus, take advantage of them. A song from the list (2 points), which wins the theme (4 points) and it's from a genre I''ve never heard (3 points), might compensate of getting a 4 (thus earning you 9 special points). Think about it. You can send for next round now.

Hey, cool that you liked Assemblage 23, though I'm not totally sure of the exact genre. Definitely check out more of their stuff if you liked that song, though.

sent btw

It's 2:30 a.m. here, hardly counts as "tomorrow morning".  :)

Just by a small margin, you won a special point for sending a song from the only PoS album I kind of liked.

Hell yeah.  :tup

So special points are added to my score basically? That means I'm sharing the second place with Elite for now? I'm alright with my 7+5 then.

Edit: your second and third link for to-listen list require some editing, apparently

Edit 2: your to-listen list has some of the albums I love, but I guess sending you something from, say, Holy Diver, will get me precisely 1 point for the song + 2 special points; so I think I'll pass on this opportunity.  :lol
