Favourite saxophone solos
« on: November 06, 2014, 02:05:38 AM »
The inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax, was born 200 years ago today on November 6, 1814. Since then it's been used in a huge variety of music, from classical to jazz and rock.

What are your favourite saxophone solos (in any genre)?

I love the sax in popular songs like The Power of Love (Hewey Lewis), Sledgehammer (Peter Gabriel) but my fave is
I don't believe anymore by Icehouse.

There are heaps more, these just came to mind straight away.

I love the instrument but can't really say what's my favourite although this being DTF i'll have to say Through Her Eyes alt. version is pure ear candy.

Btw the Saxtuba needs to be a thing again:

Pink Floyd's songs with sax.

And a youtube video called 'Miles Davis last performance'. Look it up, it's a fusion jam with an incredible saxophone solo by Kenny Garrett.

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

My choice is an obvious one too, the sax solo at the end of The Logical Song. When it kicks in, I always get chills. It's my favorite one by far. Supetramp had many great sax moments, so did Colosseum, Van Der Graaf Generator and even Jethro Tull.

Also, The Dance of Eternity epic sax guy. Love that he jumps the octave @1:22, like DT did on Budokan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_57e0mUcAE

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

Some of the first to come to mind:

Charles Mingus - Moanin'. Particularly the version by Mingus Big Band
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__OSyznVDOY

Dexter Gordon - I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lI-IqSxCHo

Coltrane - pick a track on Kind of Blue

Dave Matthews Band - Bartender (Lillywhite Sessions)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvRlyOokh6k

or the solo on this version of Exodus (starts at about 3 mins): https://grooveshark.com/#!/s/Exodus+w+David+Ryan+Harris+Meadow+Brook+Music+Festival+MI+Aug+23+1995/2XUORc?src=5

Glenn Frey "You Belong to the City"... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4ueaD22hg8

The 80's was filled with great rock/pop songs with the sweet sounds of the saxophone.

I'm actually not entirely sure if it's a saxophone, but it sounds like it...and even if it isn't, it's a prominent horn and I love the use of it.

Porcupine Tree's Don't Hate Me, the ending saxophone solo gets me every time and the last few notes, especially that last lingering one, really hits me hard. It's beautiful stuff and it's pretty subtle, but prominent enough to be emotionally effective. That's really all I can think of right now but it's by far and away my most adored horn solo.

I should note that in some versions (live or recorded/demo) there's just the flute solo, but in other versions, and I believe in the official record version, there's also a (again, I THINK) sax solo. The flute part is also awesome but the sax really adds the sex.

RIP DTP.

let me introduce you to Mr. Lenny Pickett from Tower of Power

Knock Yourself Out (from Live And In Living Color) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4ao7AEsc0g   solo starts at about 1:40, and keeps going . . .

Squib Cakes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvJH0x1CTho  solo starts about 3:10

Real Deal - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbR3QbpKhGg  solo starts about 1:50

playing on Little Feet's Mercenary Territory (live version) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX1m0H75HE8  solo starts about 2:45 (don't have any dogs around for those altissimo notes at the end)

Cannonball Adderley - Autumn Leaves - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u37RF5xKNq8

Oliver Nelson - Stolen Moments - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbaGDDbpcQ4

Winger would be better!

. . . and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

While there are probably 1000 different renditions, Steve Marcus's solos in Channel One Suite (Buddy Rich) always made me smile. Builds from a nice, mellow groove into manic mayhem.

It took me a very long time to figure out how to groove to the bassline under the solo.

There's a saxophone solo in the middle of Don't Hate Me. The end solo (at least on Stupid Dream) is a guitar solo.

No idea to be honest but I would assume the sound would be more like the sax while the Sousa have a more "clean" tuba sound. The mouthpiece on the Saxtuba seems to be the same and it also has three cylinders. It kind of ceased to exist ~100 years ago though.

Is Baker Street really a solo?  I always thought of it as more of a lead, especially since its the main melody of the song and never really veers from it.
