hey whaddup i noticed that the polls/survivors subforum is kinda dead

WHO'S UP FOR A DEVIN TOWNSEND SURVIVOR?

1. Would you be interested?
2. Should Sky Blue and Dark Matters be separate polls? (I say yes)
3. Should Devlab and The Hummer be included? (I say no)
4. Anything aside from main album stuff that you think should be included?
5. 1-day or 2-day rounds? 1-day makes sense with how much there is to get through.

1: Yup.
2: Mmhmm.
3: Nope.
4: Maybe Project EKO and Epiclouder?
5: Don't care.

I'm not gonna selectively choose the non-main album stuff, either a general yes or general no to it and the consensus seems to be the latter (which I'm fine with tbh)

Will probably get this going before the end of the week then. 1 day rounds, no Devlab/Hummer.

How about we do the non-main album stuff after the discography

Also, would SYL be included with this?

No SYL. Literally never heard any SYL, this is just Devin Townsend/Devin Townsend Band/Devin Townsend Project/Casualties of Cool all that stuff
(+Ocean Machine if we're being really technical)

Why does Casualties of Cool get included if SYL doesnt?

you can run a SYL survivor if you want to
personally I tend to just group Casualties with the Devin Townsend solo stuff since all the solo records are practically unique anyways

A SYL survivor would be great. Hell, I'd host it.

1. because i have Casualties and have not listened to any SYL
2. because it's one album as opposed to 5
3. because strapping young lad isn't really a devin solo thing and casualties pretty much is
4. because i say so

I'd like a separate SYL survivor. In my opinion, SYL is much different from the rest of Devin's work (including CoC) because it's really a whole band, with almost a separate history, which basically made Devin 'famous'. If CoC were to have a few more albums, I'd run a separate survivor for that, but for now I'd like to include it in Devin's solo album repertoire.

OKAY one last thing, what songs are considered "bonus tracks" and should I include them anyways
fact-checking it seems like Things Beyond Things is considered a bonus track which makes no sense because the album doesn't properly end without it, but then so are Noisy Pink Bubbles and Humble which I both think feel tacked on at the end of the album (barely listen to either) and there's on on Physicist too I think I dunno
thoughts? tho I'm probably going to just include them anyways whatever it's only a few more songs
EDIT: also with how long this survivor is going to be already would anyone at all complain if I skipped the dialogue-only tracks on the Ziltoid albums
because seriously now

by my count, with 1-day rounds and excluding the Ziltoid dialogue tracks, with 3 songs from the consolation going on to the finals, this survivor will take 203 rounds and have 33 songs in the finals.

PREPARE YOURSELVES.

Most of those songs are just going to get voted out early anyway so it doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things.

I just got back from seeing Devin with Elite. What an amazing show. Dev's voice was quite fucked up because he had the flu, but Anneke came out to sing a few songs with him and the atmosphere was brilliant. Plus, the setlist was just... wow. Way better than I expected.

Giving Z2 a chance again. Now, I'm not a dynamic range fascist like Steven Wilson, but does it sound 'dead' or what? That snare is muffled underneath everything else the entire time. What a shame.

yeah, the mix comes across pretty compromised a lot of the time. you can tell Dev was just gone by the time he finished it.

Whenever I see people complaining about production, I am glad once again that I apparently just don't hear it. Nothing against those who do, but I'm happy that I find myself able to enjoy music regardless of its production value, unless they are COMPLETE shit.

Not that that helped much with Z2, sadly. March of the Poozers is the only song on that album that I come back to nowadays.

I don't know about Devlab since I haven't heard it, but I really enjoyed The Hummer (bought a signed copy from his soon to close web store as well). Nice to see Devin have his try at ambient/drone stuff which is the kind of stuff I've been gravitating towards as of recent.

Devlab is a little tough to get through at first, but once you listen past the fake drums and the weird vocal samples it's a wonderful piece really. It takes you places.

Devlab is basically horrible. The Hummer is better, very atmospheric, but it doesn't really interest me. Completely appreciate the albums as part of Devy's hugely diverse music portfolio (which still to this day blows my mind), but they're not really for me.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.
