Like I said, from a newb I didn't even know there was a DT vs DTB vs DTP... Seems confusing since its all DT buy I was wondering if one band has a specific sound over another.  Like how Epiccloud and Addicted have a similar sound but AE is a bit different .

Screw all that. I save everything into my Media Player Library as "Devin Townsend".       Though Strapping Young Lad of course remains as "Strapping Young Lad"

That's what I do too.

I started doing that as well after reading the responses from you guys.  I guess just take each album as its own piece of work and the band name doesnt matter much.  I like the song Love? but havent listened to much SYL.

Yeah, I prefer to have all the Devin releases in strict chronological order on my media player, so I just labeled them all Devin Townsend.

most media players let you effectively group by album artist, so you can label them all DT for that, and leave the regular artist field as DTB/DTP/etc. (obviously you can do the opposite as well, depending on how you sort your music... and i suppose the actual names of the tags suggest doing it the other way around!)

I don't know if anybody agrees but I think Devin suffers from mixing phenomenon which is too many instruments at the same time. The sound is comes muddy and I can't hear all the instruments clearly myself. This is a problem at least in Z2. Too many guitars, strings and other instruments.
Do you even whahíbrido pickingant?

Most people would call it a feature rather than a bug. It's Devin's patented Wall-Of-Sound™ system.

Some of his albums have a "lighter" wall of sound like Addicted and AE, while others have this huge brickwall, like Deconstruction, Terria and City (SYL), which need a HiFi system to be better appreciated. And a high quality source. Of course you can listen to them on a Chinese mp3 player/cheap smartphone, using 128 kbps files and a pair of overpriced headphones (aka Beats by Dr. Dre), but I wouldn't recommend Devin's music in that cas :lol .

the background layers are all way forward, but not always for the better...

So my learning of his catalog needs to move on.  Of the albums I have heard, here is how I rate them:

Addicted
Epicloud
Accelerated Evolution
...
Sky Blue

I dont think Sky Blue is bad, has a few amazing songs such as the title track, but overall as an album falls a little flat.  I have listened to some of the ziltoid stuff as well as some of deconstruction on youtube.  Some I like, but that music is way more dense and needs a lot more time to listen to and digest.  I also have the Retinal Circus DVD which is amazing and the two SYL songs are really good too.  Any suggestions on where to go now?  You guys helped me with Accelerated Evolution which I love!

If you liked the SYL song, check their album City. About Devin, I'd check Ocean Machine and get through the rest of his discography chronologically - just skip Physicist. Ultimetal's thread is quite complete adn there's lots of interesing discussion there.

Apparently Dev posted on his FB saying the HevyDevy store won't be selling cd's anymore, but later...I guess.

You can still buy the cds while you can and ask for them to be signed.

hey whaddup i noticed that the polls/survivors subforum is kinda dead

WHO'S UP FOR A DEVIN TOWNSEND SURVIVOR?

1. Would you be interested?
2. Should Sky Blue and Dark Matters be separate polls? (I say yes)
3. Should Devlab and The Hummer be included? (I say no)
4. Anything aside from main album stuff that you think should be included?
5. 1-day or 2-day rounds? 1-day makes sense with how much there is to get through.

I don't know his full catalogue enough to fully participate but I would for albums I know well enough.  I cant answer the rest of the questions.

1. Fuck yes
2. Yes.
3. As much as I like The Hummer, I'd say no to both. I've never even listened to Devlab all the way,
3. If other people are interested, then I think the bonus stuff from Contain Us, Epiclouder(Plus Take My Ego, Cry Forever, Epicloud, and Buddha Bidet), the 2 Ass-Sordid Demos, and Casualties of Cool Disc 2(Plus Cold Feet and Thing) should be included. If not, cool beans.
5. Doesn't matter to me

Also, would SYL be included with this?

1. HELL YES :metal
2. Yeah
3. Nop.
4. Not only Devin's main discog is huge, so is the amount of bonus tracks, demos and the like. For the sake of this not taking an eternity, NO.
5. 1-day rounds will be fine.

I'd vote on the albums I know (which is most of them), no to Devlab and Hummer, no to bonus songs.
