DT's Best Heaviest Moments?
« on: October 26, 2014, 10:07:37 AM »
I'll make a list in a bit, but one of their best heavy moments has to be the harsh verse's of Scarred. I'm listening to it now, and it always blows me away. Both lyrically and melodically... this is just intense. And Labrie's vocals, don't even get me started on how brutal he sounds.

"Can't let them rape me again... your venom's not family here."

ROAR

I think The Mirror is one of their best heavy songs. That's the first that comes to mind.

edit: but yeah, this section on Scarred is amazing too.  :tup
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

The Dark Eternal Night is a heavy monster from beginning to end.
Intro - verses - intrumental part - ending riff, everything.

- That riff in "Illumination Theory". You know which one I'm talking about.
- "A Fortune in Lies" has some great chugging that's really good to bang your head to.
- "The Mirror" alone is heavy as hell.
- The riff after 'Don't cross the crooked step' in "Honor thy Father".
- "Peruvian Skies" gets nice and heavy later on.

First one that comes to mind is TGP. :metal Just all of it.
Most of Train of Thought is great for heavy moments, including As I Am's, Honor Thy Father (don't cross the crooked step), and ITNOG's riffing. ANTR also deserves a mention.

But the heaviest of them all? Gotta go with TDEN. :metal :metal
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The part in the middle section of The Glass Prison that uses turntable sounds. Additionally, the same part in This Dying Soul.

The Glass Prison, may be their heaviest tune I think. Also Dark Eternal Night, the ending is nice and sludgy. Lie, and the under rated and over looked awesome Honor Thy Father. :metal :metal :metal

All the heavy stuff on Awake is as heavy as they've ever gotten I think. This has to to with a combination of things:

1. The grooves are badass.
2. The guitars are downtuned, yet clear.
3. JLB's vocals are badass.
4. The production is crystal clear, dynamic and therefore heavy.

SDOIT has this thing going on to a lesser extent. TOT is pretty heavy, but it has muddy production.

Awake has it all. It is ultra heavy.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

In terms of a moment that's great because of its heaviness, I have to go with Peruvian Skies, when the main riff first appears in its heavy form (after the guitar solo).

Awake contains Labrie's best display of aggressive style vocals. He literally sounds like some kind of demonic force of nature some times on that album. (which is a good thing)

My kinda thread! Some of these aren't the absolute hardest, but still hard in their own right.

My favs include these parts:

Scarred: https://youtu.be/G6SjyRLKy70?t=2m28s

The Mirror: DAT Simple Riff: https://youtu.be/P-k2JSZd_Qw?t=2m20s

The Glass Prison: DESE Riffs: https://youtu.be/gwDgX7Un3AQ?t=1m55s  and https://youtu.be/gwDgX7Un3AQ?t=2m13s

The Test That Stumped Them All: https://youtu.be/h3JO8awhZnA?t=36s (For some reason, I feel like this riff is DT's heaviest moment. Heavy in an energetic sense, not really a dark sense. Either this, or The Glass Prison.)

Learning To Live: https://youtu.be/GjXe9Jd209Y?t=3m10s

A Change Of Seasons: https://youtu.be/mZKrwJzGg0k?t=1m40s

Sacrificed Sons: https://youtu.be/3nBpLzNwkZw?t=7m18s

Bridges In The Sky: https://youtu.be/S1fNCc_whtU?t=1m49s

Honor Thy Father: https://youtu.be/KGHXy9Fa45k?t=9m24s

In The Name Of God: https://youtu.be/ruxeHJEdh20?t=10m7s (Specifically here when it comes back in after the unison solo)

On The Backs Of Angels: https://youtu.be/oasnbzEMV08?t=1m55s

Peruvian Skies: https://youtu.be/dr0ebtzSeWM?t=4m19s (Love all 3 back to back riffs)

Pull Me Under: https://youtu.be/SGRgAULYgWE?t=1m16s

Also Dark Eternal Night, the ending is nice and sludgy.

I remember JP and MP specifically mentioning that ending riff of TDEN on the Systematic Chaos documentary as being the "heaviest riff in DT history."

In case you haven't seen: https://youtu.be/rpMn6gP69eM?t=42m7s

I'm still confused about it :( It's definitely heavy, but I can't believe they think it's heavier than The Glass Prison or The Test That Stumped Them All. Or even The Mirror or Scarred riffs.

Well most of the ones I can think of have been mentioned.

A Rite of Passage anyone? The verses and the bridge/solo section.

Light Fuse can feel kinda heavy with it's verse riff but the tone doesn't really punch through as much.

The bridge and solo? I don't know. I guess they're heavy, but they don't really seem to go anywhere and just amble about. Nothing really interesting about them. AROP's high point for me is the chorus, but that doesn't really qualify as heavy so... :lol

The Dark Eternal Night
The ending riff is just  :metal  That riff just never get's boring.

A Nightmare to Remember
The intro riff is, IMHO, the heaviest riff ever.

Honor Thy Father
Probably the heaviest song over-all.

Bridges In The Sky
The heavy riff is great, love playing that :D

And of course The Mirror Intro  :metal
