Rank these 5 DT songs
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:14:11 PM »
Lost Not Forgotten, Honor Thy Father, Blind Faith, Sacrificed Sons, Scarred.  All 5 of these songs are between 10 and 11 minutes.  I thought it was interesting that each one is from a different album. They are all prety unique to one another and show different styles to DT.  Rank these songs from best to worst.

1. Blind Faith: This song has recently been waning on me slightly because I over play it a lot, but I can't deny it's an amazing song.  6D is my #1 album and this song is a primary reason why.

2. Sacrificed Sons: I'm not gonna lie...it was close between this one and #1.  This song is amazing and I love the contrast between the first half and the second half, how it slowly builds to get heavier and heavier.

3. Scarred: I personally prefer Voices, the other epic on Awake.  Still, Scarred is a great song that still lands in my top 30.

4. Honor Thy Father: This is where the list takes a massive drop.  This song is alright, I love the chorus and the "DON'T CROSS THE CROOKED STEP" part, but parts of it, especially the rapping, makes me cringe.  I'm not even sure if this makes my top 50.  Probably not

5. Lost Not Forgotten: Boring.  This is what I think of when I think of this song,  I rank it as the worst song on ADTOE and for good reason.  This song is a chore to get through.  It feels dry and uninspired.  It's not terrible, but it's not great.  It's ok I guess, just very boring.

1. Sacrificed Sons
2. Blind Faith
3. Honor Thy Father
4. Scarred
5. Lost Not Forgotten

You made great points on all these, but I disagree with HTF. Pretty killer song IMO. Lyrically I love both Scarred and LNF, but musically, Scarred is my least favorite from Awake, and you nailed it: LNF is just plain boring.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

Ranking arbitrary things is what DTF is all about! :metal

1. Blind Faith - One of DT's most amazingly incredible standout songs, as most of SDOIT is. This song took forever to grow on me, and crept up slowly, so it's probably easily top 10 for me these days.

2. Sacrificed Sons - A beautiful song, with a uniquely sombre mood, and a typically awesome JP solo.

3. Honor Thy Father - I'm not always in the mood for heavy, but when I am, this song is one of my favourites from ToT to listen to. It's so unashamedly heavy and badass.

4. Lost Not Forgotten - One of my favourites from ADTOE, and a good song, but not one I return to often these days. It makes me want to listen to UAGM.

5. Scarred - DT's worst song this side of WDADU.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Scarred is Top 5 DT song material, with Blind Faith well within the Top 20, whereas Sacrificed Sons is really the only average song of the bunch.

All great songs in their own regard.

Honor Thy Father is probably almost a top 10 song no joke, definitely used to be. It's one of the heaviest things DT have done, and the guitar and drums have a great chemistry in this one.

I like Blind Faith because the instrumentation and solos are amazing.

Lost not Forgotten can blow my brain apart with it's tickle section. Verses have awesome riffs, chorus is catchy. Great.

Sacrificed Sons. This one bores me a bit sometimes, but by the third verse and after that bridge that starts off with the bass, things really pick up and the song gets a lot better. I find it drags a bit at the start, but I get what the piece is going for, which is a subtle build up into something epic.

Scarred - This is one of DTs songs that took the longest to grow on me, but now that it has, I really appreciate how different it is. Has some really cool bass grooves for JM, I love the syncopated guitar riff just before the solo section, also has a great instrumental section. Still probably my least favorite out of this selection though.

You know, one thing 3 of these songs have in common that I only just noticed, but SS, HTF and Scarred all have similar syncopated guitar riffs that that emphasise the off beats. Technically I guess it's nothing too fancy, but still very cool sounding.

1. Sacrificed Sons - I've always loved this track, especially the ending and the whole second half really. One of their more underrated songs for me, a top 15 song.

2. Scarred - Not quite as good as Voices, but definitely my 2nd favourite from Awake. Not top tier stuff, but probably just outside my top 25.
3. Lost Not Forgotten - Really good fun, but not even in my top 4 tracks on ADTOE. Ranked a little bit lower than Scarred now that my initial love for ADTOE has worn off slightly.

4. Blind Faith - I've never quite managed to get this song for some reason. It has all the ingredients for me to really enjoy it, but it's just never clicked with me. I don't dislike it or anything though.
5. Honor Thy Father - Again, not a song I dislike, but definitely one of the weakest tracks on ToT. Could have swapped positions with BF and these 2 are not as strong as the other 3.

1. Blind Faith - great atmosphere, one of Jordan's absolute best performances with the triple piano-organ-synth solo, excellent chorus, top 10 material

2. Scarred - excellent drumming, love how creative MP can get in a mid-tempo song; great vocal melodies, feels like it has two choruses ("What if" and then the real chorus, great moment when the double bass kicks in @ "Belief will always save me", just like in the chorus of TDEN)

3. LNF - technical and engaging, great contrast between the complexity of the tickle section and the simple groovy riff which comes right after, oh yeah! Also features some of my favorite solos in recent years from both JP (great tone, and the whammy bar flutter is one of my favorite things you can do with a guitar) and JR (finally something a bit more melodic with that patch)

4. SS - great transition from soft to heavy, some of it reminds a lot of ITPOE (at 2:15, 3:34, I always hum along "daaaark masteeer", 4:20 is also a lot like 0:45 of ITPOE), the lyrics alienate me a bit and that babbling at the beginning is so annoying, taints the song

5. HTF - fun, but not my cup of tea by all means

1. Scarred
2. Blind Faith

Both of these are Top 10 songs for me.

3. Lost Not Forgotten - One of the best songs on ADTOE

4. Honor Thy Father - I used to like this one a lot, but it has lost a lot of luster over the years.  I really have to be in the right mood to listen to this, and I am rarely in that mood.

5. Sacrificed Sons - pretty much the same thing.  There's nothing wrong with it, but there is nothing captivating about it either.  Have to be in the right mood.

Scarred - the best DT
Sacrificed Sons - in the good but not great category
Blind Faith - good song let down by some cheesiness
Honor Thy Father - boring anger and heaviness, probably the one song that should've been cut from ToT
Lost Not Forgotten - bottom 5 DT

Scarred and Honor Thy Father could switch places depending on the mood i'm in. Blind Faith is among my favorite DT songs in general. I guess LNF is a pretty cool song, but not as cool as Scarred and HTF, and i don't really like Sacrificed Sons so that' s it.

1. Scarred: Oh god I already liked the song but it suddenly popped into my top 10 after BTFW. Beautiful...
2. Blind Faith: I really should give that album more love, the song is fantastic.
3. Sacrificed Sons: It's a nice song, not that I constantly listen to it.  But I have to say Score version is great.
4. Lost Not Forgotten: It really feels like a rip-off from UAGM, yet I like the song. Not even close to a top 25 (or even 50) though.
5. Honor Thy Father: I like how strong the song is, but it's from my 2nd least favourite album and it automatically sends the song to the bottom of this short list.

1. Scarred - Clearly the best of the bunch. Melodic, well-written, emotionally powerful.
2. Sacrificed Sons - Very emotional song. Some would say that the instrumental is out of place, but I disagree. Good lyrics.
3. Blind Faith - Yet another really emotional one. The highlights for me would be James's vocals and the spectacular instrumental section.
4. Lost Not Forgotten - Definitely was a grower for me. While it's not exactly my favorite on ADTOE, it's by no means a bad song and is definitely deserving of its place on that album.
5. Honor Thy Father - The only really subpar song, by DT standards, on this list (I would say LNF is average, SS and BF are good, and Scarred is great). Still a good song, just not one that I want to listen to often.

1. Scarred - A progressive masterpiece in my opinion.

2. Blind Faith - Beautiful, the keyboard/guitar harmony near the end of the instrumental section is stellar

3. Honor Thy Father - Fittingly brutal and emotional, the buildups and releases are key points in this song

4. Lost Not Forgotten - UAGM 2.0 but has its own merits as a riff factory  :metal

5. Sacrificed Sons - Is okay, the instrumental section is the best part to me

Only 1-4 would be in my top 50, with Scarred and BF in my 20.

1. Blind Faith- top 10 masterpiece. One of my favorite performances from Jordan and MP. Probably James' best lyrics.

2. Scarred- very unique feeling song. Chorus and outro are brilliant. Some parts drag a bit for me but overall it's an amazing song. Bass and drum groove in this song is killer.

3. Honor Thy Father- first song I really loved from DT when I was all metal and no prog. Heavy, groovin, awesome.

4. Sacrificed Sons

5. Lost Not Forgotten- UAGM clone, yes, but that doesn't make it bad at all.

1: Blind Faith    Love it, best Jordan organ sound on any song since he joined and sadly I don't think a sound he has repeated
2: Honor Thy Father   Such a good heavy song, one of my fav's on the ToT album
3: Lost Not Forgotten  So underrated some of the sickest unison's they have ever done, and I don't get or hear the UaGM comparison. It also has a killer groove to it.
4: Scarred  I like just slightly better than SS
5: Sacrificed Sons  It's good not great. Over played it live too.
Scheming demons dressed in kingly guise, beating down the multitude and scoffing at the wise.
