The Prog and Metal thread
« on: October 18, 2014, 03:11:27 PM »
Ok... so we have a Melodic Rock Thread, a classic rock/metal thread, power metal, extreme metal, death metal and several other genres. But where do we go for prog and metal, for bands that don't have their own dedicated thread.  Well, how about here?  Stumbled across a couple things today:

How have I not heard of the band Wicked Sensation before?  New (4th) album coming out in a month.  Nice promo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PwJfb2XgTho

Lead singer is Robert Soeterboek... of Live On Earth (Star One) fame.

Yet another band to put on the list.

Also, Triosphere... I know there are a few fans here.  New album coming out next month:

With only 3 weeks to go until the release of the whole shebang we can finally share with you more than just a few seconds! AFM have put together this lyric-video of one of the 12 tracks on the album,- we hope you’ll play it loud - listen first, read afterwards – and that you’ll like what you hear! Here it is; The Heart’s Dominion!

You should check out a band called Dream Theater. Good stuff. In my opinion the perfect blend of prog and metal. Unfortunately they aren't well known, but they are super talented.

Isnt this whole forum a prog metal forum?  :lol
Thats why we have non-prog sub threads in the first place.

Well, I guess I didn't see the need to start a whole new thread(s) dedicated to bands that won't drive a ton of discussion.

No, the whole forum is a Dream Theater forum. The purpose of this thread is the same as the Melodic/AOR thread, to discuss bands that don't have enough of a following to justify an individual thread.

I hope I didn't come across as rude, that wasn't my intent. I was just trying to explain why the thread was here, because there did seem to be some genuine confusion.

No offense meant man.

That Wicked Sensation track sounds excellent. I never liked the singer in Star One but he sound good here.

And Triosphere are excellent too. Good start.

I really liked Robert Soeterboeks deep voice, especially on the Live On Earth DVD.

Will check that out!

Soeterboek was only on the live album. Dan Swano did he deep parts on both studio releases.   And Harry Hess is guesting on that Wicked Sensation album.

Yeah I only have the live dvd/cd thing. He's not the only one on there that puts me off - Damien Wilson too. Saying that I love that dvd

Mindmaze... Back From the Edge.

New AOTY contender.

Sarah sounds incredible, and Jeff's tones is what chocolate cake would sound like.  This is gonna get a LOT of replay in the next little while.

Back to seriousness, the new MindMaze is pretty good.  It started as just supporting a friend, but they're pretty damn good.  Can't wait to see them in two weeks, even if it is only a 30 minute set at a festival.

Yeah the MindMaze is excellent. Both albums sound a million bucks too. Not bad to say they were done independently.
Lots of power metal albums appeal to me but end up being very samey throughout an album and I get bored quickly. The MM albums hold my attention. ANd no pseudo-operatics in the vocals too.

Sorry, but until my company pays me an infinite salary, I can't contribute to everything fundraiser out there  ;).  I had JUST become a Mindmaze fan when they started the Kickstarter for this one, and decided to wait.  They got my moneys.

They are a female fronted power metal, but they aren't operatic so they have their own sound.  Worth your time to check them out.
