Compare DT to other greats in their respective craft
« on: October 07, 2014, 09:15:59 PM »
For example, mine would be: Dream Theater is the LeBron James of progressive metal. Both are in their career prime, popularity wise. LeBron has won two championships in recent years and DT has been nominated for two Grammys. Both faced some adversity a few years earlier - LeBron for "The Decision" and DT with the Portnoy situation.

Dream Theater is like Inception, in that their fans praise them for their complexity and technicality, but their detractors criticize them for the exact same reasons.

Problem?   Mothers, children, and non-basketball fans have heard of (and know) LeBron James.   If you're not a fan, you have no idea who Dream Theater is.  Sorry, but fact.   I'm not going to even touch the Jesus comparison.

Dream Theater is to music as John Cazale (or perhaps Bruno Kirby) are to acting.  Unbelievably talented, probably not as well-known as they might be, but always making quality work that for better or worse flies just slightly under the radar.

And as it turns out, Inception is my favorite movie.

Dream Theater is to music as Jesus Christ is to religion.

Thousands of years from now... people will still be listening to DT. Fact.

No where in ANY of the Gospels did Jesus EVER say "I am here to start a religion..."

In fact, Christ was very much at ODDS with the "religious" leaders of his day!

It's a big part of the reason he was CRUCIFIED!

If you don't believe ME, look it UP!

You know who DID say "I am starting a RELIGION...?...

...Ever heard of a little thing called "MEIN KAMPF???"

So..if you want to compare DT to CHRIST and Christianity, do it by saying that they and those of us who love their music are at least sometimes very much at odds with what passes for "music" and the fans thereof in this --- (insert your own word here) day and age!

If DT members were NFL QB's

John Petrucci = Tom Brady
One of the longest standing members. Also still among the best. Sometimes it feels like he's carrying the team.

John Myung = Joe Flacco
Nothing flashy, but he gets the job done. Certainly has moments of greatness. But more a guy in the backdrop who is the solid rock of the team.

Jordan Rudess = Tony Romo
The guy who is one of the greats on paper, who theoretically has it all, and who keeps screwing up on those clutch KM solos everyone wants to hear.

James LaBrie = Eli Manning
The dude has had some serious clutch moments. Reliable. Clocks in day in and day out. The dude also "throws a ton of interceptions".

Mike Mangini = Andrew Luck
The new guy, the prodigy, the rookie who plays like a veteran who's been there all along.

BONUS

Mike Portnoy = Donovan McNabb
We appreciated him while he was here, even if he left on somewhat of a sour note. Now that he's gone, would he please just stop talking?

Derek Sherinian = Mark Sanchez
"The Scapegoat" - could have done more, but the band were turning into a circus act when he was around and unfortunately he got the brunt of it.

Kevin Moore = Joe Namath
The legend from the distant past. Still the best guy the team ever had at his position.

Charlie Dominici = Tommy Maddox
Another blast from the past who clearly wasn't ever going to work. Went back to music years after getting shown the door. Worked out marginally better.

Was this satire ... or did you really just blow up out of nowhere because of an innocuous joke?
And, maybe I'm confusing you with someone else, but didn't you blow up similarly a while ago? Again because of an innocuous joke about Christianity? Maybe it's time to lay down the Good Book for a while and read one about Zen.

I would liken DT with Kelly Slater ...although Kelly retired and came back he is 11 time world champion....for the last few years he has been at number two in the rankings and still manages some impressive heats with perfect 10 scores....he does not look to be slowing down and appears to just get better with age.

I think DT are the same  25+ years, great releases and great concerts they too do not appear to be slowing down.

I should have listed Surfer in the post....he was on Baywatch for one season....I won't hold that against him.

When a lot of you in the early 1990's were into Dream Theater, I was listening to Satriani and Vai and following the ASP world tour.

Yeah, nice reasoning and get why some of you all like it.  To be more accurate, it would have to be a qb who always did what was best for the team, paid his dues, won two super bowls in a row, and then immediately retired the NFL at age 27 to play the rest of his successful career in the CFL.
