DT songs for drummers
« on: September 29, 2014, 01:46:43 PM »
Hi there!
I'm learning to play the drums (8 months now) and I was looking for great drum lines in DT songs to practice.
I started today with the intro of Under a Glass Moon.
Tough drumming, but I got it after half an hour! lol
Now I'm into Metropolis intro. I love the line when the drum kicks in. Sounds simple but it its really a good line to practice.
Portnoy is very creative!
Any other suggestions?
No, I still can't play the intro for A Nightmare to Remember!

The Root of All Evil is really fun to play. Most of the stuff on that album is. It's not Portnoy's craziest stuff as most are aware, but the drum parts are really well-written and enjoyable to play along with

The first four songs on Octavarium are piss easy and fun.

The Great Debate (that polyrythm in the middle is impossible)
That is one of Portnoy's greatest drumming achievements on a studio album and one of my favorites to play. So awesome.

My favorite songs to play:

The Dance of Eternity (favorite song of all time to play. Start off my counting the time signatures along with the song, then just follow the rhythm. Once you get the pattern locked in, it's real easy to follow along.)
Only A Matter of Time
Under A Glass Moon
Take the Time
Metropolis
Caught in a Web
Lie
Lifting Shadows
Just Let Me Breathe
Lines in the Sand
Metropolis Pt. 2 (the whole thing)
Six Degrees (both discs, whole album)
As I Am
Honor Thy Father
Root of All Evil
ItPoE, Pt 1
Constant Motion
TDEN
The Shattered Fortress
Bridges in the Sky
Outcry
Breaking All Illusions
Enemy Inside
Looking Glass
Surrender to Reason
Illumination Theory
