What band/artist have you seen live the most?
« on: September 26, 2014, 04:24:21 PM »
And how many times? Would/will you keep seeing them live in the future? Where do you draw the line?

I was browsing another forum this morning and this chick mentioned that she had seen David Gray (man in my avatar) 100 times. That's about 6,000 dollars on tickets alone, not to mention other travel costs. Completely blew my mind.

So what about y'all? I'm expecting the biggest numbers from the die-hard Rush fans, maybe someone who has seen Grateful Dead a ton (lonestar? I think I remember reading that...), as well as a lot of Dream Theater.

Rush twice and Dream theater twice.

All other bands I have seen only once. I would see Rush again though, if money and time permitted.

First time I see a band is to cross them off a concert bucket list. 2nd time is if the album or setlist is strong and I have the dough to see them in decent seats.

My totals are extremely modest  :lol

Dream Theater - 3 times
Deftones - twice
65daysofstatic - twice
Anathema - twice (once was supporting Opeth)
Opeth - will be twice when I see them again in a few weeks. EDIT: Will actually be the third time I see them, forgot about the PN09 show with DT

Then there are a few bands I've seen once before that I'll maybe see again in the coming months - Tesseract, Mono, Mastodon.

Whether I go and see a band that I've seen before depends mainly on their most recent album and the potential setlist. eg. Maybeshewill - I'm not so keen on their latest album, so I probably won't go and see them on this tour.

DT I would probably always go and see, as long as they were playing close enough. I travelled a fair distance to see them earlier this year, but I would only do that again if I knew what the setlist was going to be and I liked it.

I live on the moon and thus have never seen a band more than once. I've only ever seen one band I actually like (Brand New) that wasn't a "just for the hell of it" thing, and that was in another city. But I'm seeing Beach House soon so that'll be a first. :)

Opeth is the king, with four times, including twice in four months. Second place is Dream Theater at three times, Kiss at three times, and Rush at three times. Iron Maiden twice, and then, as far as I remember, no other band more than once, but a pretty sizable list there.

Being a young chap in Australia, I haven't seen any bands that many times. I've seen several bands twice, but none more than that. This October should be the 3rd time I've seen Dream Theater though.

I think it's a tie with Dream Theater and Disturbed at 3. Next May Delain will join the tie. Kamelot in second place with 2 times. I don't always get to go to concerts due to lack of funds and living in a state where no one wants to come to.

Styx 14 times + DDY 4 times and Shaw/Blades once. (Not to mention playing in my own Styx tribute band, so I've seen every show and rehearsal of that  :lol) But I know people who've seen Styx over 100 times.

DT comes second with 6 shows, but I've only been a fan since 2010, so that's why.

I've seen both Sonata Arctica and Amorphis four times, which is a pretty good number considering my age (19). I'll see SA again in December, and I'll consider seeing Amorphis this fall if the setlist includes enough songs I haven't seen them play before.

Josh, I didn't know you were into them.  I've seen them 4 times.  One time I told my friend I would die to Anna Begins, he told me they never play it.  Then my wife tells me she has to go to the bathroom.  They started playing Anna Begins and I told my wife, "Sorry, You'll have to hold it in for 5 minutes". :lol

lol I was joking but I do adore the singles from August and Everything After. Now I'm pissed that I didn't pick it up for $5 at Walmart a few weeks ago.

Dream Theater - 17
Rush - 14
Queensryche - 8
Transatlantic - 5
Symphony X - 5
Iron Maiden - 5
Beardfish - 4

And along with seeing them the most, Rush and Dream Theater have some of my more epic trips associated with them as well.

Most of the bands I really love have toured Australia rarely - the only one that has treated us as part of their regular touring schedule is KISS and so they win easily.  7 or 8 times.

Oh yeah that raises another good question that has surely been discussed already but fits in well with the original: longest trip for these shows? And how far are you willing to go?

I myself haven't gone farther than a 5 hour drive, but that doesn't include the multiple bus rides and 4 mile walk to get my car.

Counting Crows 21 times.

I've seen A Great Big Pile of Leaves 10 times, and I'm going to see them again in a few days, and I've this awesome local band The Guru 7 times (and that's just in the past year and a half). I've seen Titus Andronicus 3 times, and everybody else is at 1 or 2.

The Grateful Dead between 25-30 times (lost exact count amidst the haze of altered states)
Dream Theater 7 times

Hopefully the DT count will match the GD count one day.

Dream Theater - 5

Black Label Society - 2

Misfits - 2

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I don't think i've ever seen any band more than twice ( apart from local / friends bands of course ).

Big name bands i've seen twice :

Green Day, Oasis, Therapy? Mastodon.

Bands i've seen once :

R.E.M.  Tool.

Bands i've seen because they were the support slot :

Cranberries. Del Amitri. Belly. Clutch. Hundred Reasons. A. Spunge. Iggy Pop.

Rush 20+ (1975 - present)
The Dead 100+ (1974 - 1990)
Dream Theater  around 100 (1995-2012)
Portnoy and associated  another 30 (1995-present)
Sammy Hagar in various states  136 (1975-present)

I've seen the Grateful Dead somewhere around forty times. I probably paid about fifteen, and for two years I worked for Bill Graham Presents security, and had to work every Dead show in the area, amounting to about twenty shows a year at least, no clue on the exact number though.

After that we got...

Yes- 12
DT- 11
The Kinks- 10
Rush- 10
Metallica- 8 (six of these were with BGP security as well)

I've seen just about everyone I've wanted to at least once.
Most would be

Gary Moore 7 times
Magnum 7
DT 6 or 7 times
Joe Satriani 6
KISS 6
Steve Vai 5

FM probably 6 or 7 times but they were the support band for lots of bands I actually went to see

I've seen many shows but rarely have I seen bands more than once.

I've seen DT 3 times (one of which was score) and dredg 3 times.

I'd honestly love to see dredg many more times but I'd be ok with never seeing DT again, it seems like they rarely make it down here anyway (florida)

I myself haven't gone farther than a 5 hour drive, but that doesn't include the multiple bus rides and 4 mile walk to get my car.
Almost all the gigs I go to these days are in Glasgow which is about a 1-hour train journey for me. The first gig I ever went to was Radiohead in Edinburgh, which was about a 2 and a half hour drive down with friends from where I lived back then.

DT didn't come up to Scotland this year, so I went down to Manchester to see them. That was about an 80 minute train journey to Edinburgh, then a wait around for a while before getting another train down to Manchester which took a little over 3 hours. I would only travel down to England for DT again if I really liked the setlist.

Most of my friends don't really like the same bands as me these days - the only one that did moved abroad last year unfortunately. So the only other band I'd probably consider travelling a great distance for would be Bad Salad. I already decided I'd go and see them if they played anywhere in the UK. Aside from that, the cost, hassle and boredom involved in going on your own means it's not really worth it for me  :lol

I'll travel down to LA (hourish drive depending on traffic) or Anaheim (2-3 hours depending on traffic.) I've done San Bernardino once for DT / Iron Maiden (3-4 hours) and I would do San Diego depending on the band (3.5-4.5 hours depending on traffic). Up north I've done Santa Barbara (less than an hour drive.)
