Do you prefer some misheard lyrics to the original?
« on: September 16, 2014, 01:48:14 PM »
Have you ever misheard some lyrics and enjoyed them but then later on heard or read the actual
lyric and been disappointed or preferred the misheard lyric to the actual one? I'll give an example
I've been absolutely loving Paradise Lost by Symphony X and the song Domination is brutal as fuck.
The lyric below

"Break the chains around your necks
Lick your wounds, you dogs of war
Raise your badness ever high
And ravage the Babylon horde"

and

"Oh, go and turn the waters red with rage
Burn all the Earth shore to shore
Open wide the gates of hell
Defile the Babylon horde"

I misheard "Babylon horde" as "Babylon whore", which I actual preferred. Not because I prefer
my whores beaten but because I thought it suits the mentality of the song more.

Here is a song that is describing the brutality that is being blanketed over the Babylonians
and the pure hatred the attackers have for them. I thought it was fitting for the attackers
to call the city of Babylon a whore. Whore is oft thought of as a very derogatory term, and
it's very likely that an attacker full of hate would call the victim any and every name they
could think of, whether it be out of hate or trying to justify the onslaught. Too me the song
misses some blunt reality by having horde instead of horde

Are there any misheard lyrics that you guys prefer?

I'm sure there are more that I'll think of later, but off the top of my head:

"Bury the horse shaped shell", from Porcupine Tree's Open Car, which I originally heard as "Bury the heart shaped shell"

The real version just makes no sense to me, whereas "heart shaped" could potentially relate to the actual theme of the song.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

Sonata Arctica - Blood

Actual: "child of Orion"
Misheard: "child of Pariah"

I prefer the misheard line, because it would've been a cool reference to the album title, Pariah's Child. :D

I always thought it was "heart shaped shell"... Damn, I need to check the real lyrics!

It is Babylon Whore.

If it is then the lyrics sites I've gone to are incorrect. I admit I don't own the album but I'm likely to go buy it now.

Don't know the song but horde doesn't rhyme with war or shore. And then there is the Whore of Babylon who goes back to the bible so I'm pretty sure it's not horde.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

In Strange Deja Vu I always hear "something something familiar" I have no idea what the actual lyrics say  :lol
And I don't want to know cause that way is kinda funny. It makes me think JLB forgot lyrics lol

Sounds logical.

A quick check of the Paradise Lost booklet reveals the lyric is, in fact, Babylon Whore.

Still. Nice idea for a thread  :lol
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

It sounds very much like "heart shaped shell" to me. But the Porcupine Tree website claims it's "horse shaped."

Misheard:

The system taught you everything
Except a bit of subtlety

Real Lyric:

Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

I oddly kind of prefer the misheard lyric, don't know why.
