A Dream Theater Of Events (in honor of theseoafs)
« on: September 05, 2014, 03:06:27 PM »
"Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to recut A Dramatic Turn Of Events and Dream Theater into one single-disc album, A Dream Theater Of Events; the remaining songs are fed to Mike Portnoy and are lost forever. Put any of the tracks from the two albums in any order, the only stipulation being that your final tracklist cannot be longer than 80 minutes and that you cannot edit the studio versions in any way.

This thread will serve two types of people: the lovers and the haters. For the lovers, it will be a fun challenge to eliminate a few of the songs while finding room to preserve their favorites. For the haters, it'll be more of an exercise in trimming the fat while preserving the parts they actually like, though the haters should try to keep a little bit of music on there."

Pretty much as theseoafs put it in his thread combing SC and BC&SL, although as for "not being able to edit", I will say you can allow for cross-fades between tracks, using an outro or intro to mix in with another outro or intro.

Mine might take a bit for me to figure out, so I'll come back with mine later, but let's see what you guys have got! (Apologies if such a a thread has been done before).

I like that a thread I made three years ago is now being "honored".  That was one of my first posts here actually. :lol

Let me have a go.

1. Bridges in the Sky
2. The Looking Glass
3. Far from Heaven
4. Breaking All Illusions
5. The Bigger Picture
6. Behind the Veil
7. Surrender to Reason
8. Illumination Theory

This was a tough one for me since I think both albums are pretty strong, and there were some unfortunate losses; I really like Beneath the Surface and Outcry and I think The Enemy Inside and On the Backs of Angels are perfectly good rockers, but it only speaks to the strength of the two albums that they didn't make the 80 minute cut.  This playlist comes in around 1h15m.

Dude...impossible.  ADTOE is a near perfect album.

I guess I wouldn't mind them ditching Far From Heaven for something (sorry James, wish they would have let you write lyrics for a heavier song)

In fact, I would be content switching out FFH for The Bigger Picture which is the best song on DT12 by far.  All of the other songs (maybe minus IT) are inferior to any from ADTOE, which isn't saying a lot because as I stated, I thought ADTOE was near flawless.

Given that I registered for the forum a month after you came up with the title, I'm not sure your case would hold up in court.  But yeah, if you want some checks, just PM me your address and bank routing number and stuff.

How wouldn't it hold up? You registered after I came up with the title, therefore you stole it from me! I can sue your ass for plagiarism!

... Anyway, here's my take:

1. False Awakening Suite
2. The Enemy Inside
3. The Looking Glass
4. This Is The Life
5. Bridges In The Sky
6. The Bigger Picture
7. Surrender To Reason
8. Breaking All Illusions
9. Illumination Theory

Behind the veil
BMU BMD
The enemy inside
Bridges in the Sky
The bigger picture
Breaking all Illusions
Beneath the surface
Illumination theory
Far from heaven

Think of it with no space within the first 4 songs (and bridges without intro).

1- False Awakening Suite (2:42)
2- Bridges in the Sky (11:01)
3- The Looking Glass (4:53)
4- Enigma Machine (6:01)
5- On the Backs of Angels (8:42)
6- Surrender to Reason (6:34)
7- Breaking All Illusions (12:25)
8- Along for the Ride (4:45)
9- Illumination Theory (22:17)

Total run time- 79:20

This one was a little easier to do than the last one. I wanted The Enemy Inside here as the opener (besides False Awakening Suite) but ultimately it didn't fit in my plan. FAS into BITS is possibly the best opening to an album ever. I like TLG because it's a bit of a breather after the opening assault but still has a bit of a metal edge. EM was important because I feel the instrumental was vital to the flow. After that, OTBOA opens the second part of the album before going into double Myung. BAI is by far my favorite Mangini era track and STR is pretty good as well. I love the way DT12 ends so I replicated it here. I think this would be a great album.

A Dream Theater Of EVents
79:46

False Awakening Suite       2:42
Bridges In The Sky      11:01
The Bigger Picture       7:40
Surrender To Reason       6:34
Far From Heaven          3:56
Breaking All Illusions      12:25
Behind The Veil          6:52
Outcry            11:24
Illumination Theory      19:12 (No 'Easter Egg')

In my attempt to make a balanced album, especially with my favorites from DT12 like IT, TBP, BTV and STR (that run of songs on the album is AMAZING). Hearing BITS after FAS is pretty perfect, and I'm fairly certain the last chord of FAS matches the opening of BITS. Also, the ending of BAI works well to flow into the beginning of BTV, with its ambient-sounding intro. I also cut out the "Easter Egg", shortening IT's length, but because the "Easter Egg" isn't really a part of the song, I can cut it and still be within the parameters of "editing" the studio versions (that is, cutting out major parts of the song).

False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
The Looking Glass
Lost Not Forgotten
This is the Life
Bridges in the Sky
Surrender to Reason
Illumination Theory

~71 minutes. There aren't any other songs I'd really want on there, but this would be a strong album.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

That's one hell of an album! Could arguable leave out Beneath the Surface though, make it a bit more concise. I only included because it adds a bit more variety, and because it fit in. The remaining 7 songs are my favourite ones.

It was actually really difficult for me to keep under 80 minutes, but this would make one hell of an album.

I've tried to be slightly more balanced than I usually am with these sort of things and left out a couple of songs I prefer individually to some that I've put in. Still pretty tricky to make a decent track order though.

1. False Awakening Suite (2.42)
2. The Enemy Inside (6.17)
3. Breaking All Illusions (12.25)
4. Beneath The Surface (5.26)
5. Bridges in the Sky (11.01)
6. Outcry (11.24)
7. On the Backs of Angels (8.42)
8. Illumination Theory (19.12 without the Easter egg)
(77.09)

Originally had OTBOA as the 3rd track, with BAI/BTS just before IT, but I really like TEI going straight into BAI.

8. Breaking All Illusions 12:25
9. Outro (Easter Egg) 2:01

69:46

This is mostly taken from my post in the 'What are your thoughts on DT12?' thread with a few tweaks. Some may be suprised at the big epic, 'Illumination Theory' opening the album. The reason I chose IT to open the album was that I remember JP saying in one interview that IT was originally intended to open DT12 but RR persuaded the band to put TEI after FAS instead. I quite like the idea of the album being bookended by epics (ignoring the outro) just like BCaSL as I thought that that album was one of the better flowing DT albums. Also, I always liked how FFH preceeded BAI on ADToE, even if it mirrored the WfS + LtL duo at the end of IaW.

(83:29) 3,5 minutes over time but who the hell cares. I could've dropped Beneath The Surface but besides that i like the song very much i also think that an album needs some sort of a breather, especially with all the heavy songs.

Contrary to the SC and BC&SL challenge, this one is not too hard for me. I like a lot of (long) songs on SC and BC&SL, whereas ADTOE and DT have clearer low and high points for me.

1. Bridges in the Sky

4. Behind the Veil

7. Beneath the Surface

This was a really interesting project. I don't really love either of these two albums, partly because of a good number of weak songs. But "shaving off the fat" was quite enjoyable!

I converted the seconds into minutes, simply because adding up times in their usual form is so annoying. But here's my best shot:

Side 1:
Surrender to Reason (6.57)
Far From Heaven  (3.93)
Breaking All Illusions (12.42)
The Bigger Picture (7.67)

30.29 minutes

Side 2:
On the Backs of Angels (8.7)
Along for the Ride (4.75)
Illumination Theory (19.2)

32.65 minutes

62.94 minutes total. (I really don't like the "fat". :lol)

I organized these songs as a concept album about a character that goes on an existential journey. Surrender to Reason is a fitting opener, introducing the theme of new possibilities of spiritual knowledge. Far From Heaven tells you about the protagonist's deep-seated psychological scars and how she all alone in the world. Breaking All Illusions is the natural follow-up musically and thematically, where she "breaks on through to the other side" in self-reflection. Then comes The Bigger Picture, a confident assertion of her significance in the world and resolution in finding the meaning of life.

Side 2 starts with On the Backs of Angels, which lyrically hearkens back to Surrender to Reason ("restless angels help me find my way"). Surrender to Reason's message was too abstruse for our heroine to grasp at the start of her journey, however, but she is now ready to be carried by those angels, even if it means it will lead her to death, "like a lamb to the slaughter".

Then we have a nice breather with Along for the Ride, quieter but still maintaining the confident resolution to find life's meaning without being washed away by the shadow of fear. The grand conclusion to the story comes with Illumination Theory, which as we know has quite a bit to say about meaning and purpose. It ends climatically with our protagonist finally fulfilled, knowing that she is not alone in her struggles and pain.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges
