ADTOE vs DT12
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:16:35 AM »
The title is self-explatory - it's been almost a year since the release of DT12, but I don't remember there being this (exact) kind of poll.

My vote goes to ADTOE.

DT12 but as a duo I rate them their best albums in some time.

DT12 by a long long margin.

ADTOE. It has some very impressive highs (three songs in my top 10), but some lows too (two songs in bottom 10). While DT12 appears more consistent, I find myself listening to ADTOE a lot more.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

ADTOE, although I was over both very quickly. ADTOE is more consistent imo, despite not really having any high points as DT12 does.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

DT12 has a greater high point (Illumination Theory), but the rest of the album doesn't do much for me. ADTOE is more consistently good (although not great), so it got my vote.

I don't know.  It's tough for me.

Let me think about it.

Although I find BAI to be their best song in many years, DT12 is better overall of these two.

ADTOE very easily. Illumination Theory is awesome and TEI is good fun, but the rest of DT12 just doesn't really excite me unfortunately. While I'm not hugely keen on Far From Heaven or BMUBMD, the rest of ADTOE ranges from great to excellent.

Would of loved ADTOE to have the sound quality of the DT12 HD tracks. JM's mix even higher in the mix, JP's tone, and the keys a bit more upfront.

I love Breaking All Illusions...probably the best song of DT 2.0

BAI is probably the best of any of the songs on both albums, but DT12 is much more consistent. Both are DT's best in a long while though.

DT12 is a magnificent album, but it's not my cup of tea. ADTOE is Dream Theater in full melodic progressive mode. So ADTOE all the way.

I voted DT.  That was my gut reaction.  I think if I actually went in and did an analysis rating each song and then comparing totals, ADTOE would win.  But I didn't, so it's DT.

ADTOE is a best album as a whole.
DT12 has better songs but as a whole it don't really flows like an album should be.
My vote goes to ADTOE.

While I love DT12, it doesn't have anywhere near as many goosebumps moments as ADTOE.

DT12's goosebump moments
Ending of The Bigger Picture
Ending of Illumination Theory

ADTOE's goosebump moments
Chorus of BMUBMD
Most of This is the Life
"Visions come alive" from BITS
Unexpected modulation to home key for ending of BITS
"We suffered far too long" in Outcry
Chorus of Outcry
"You can't imagine" from Far From Heaven
"Live for the moment" in BAI
BAI guitar solo
Ending of BAI (same music as FFH quote mentioned above)
Chorus of Beneath the Surface

There we go.

ADTOE. It just stuck to me more at release, and it had a larger impact on me. I find myself listening to it as much as DT12, but it had a 2-year jump on it, so it's been listened to more, obviously, but I'm sure it's shelf-life is going to be just as long as DT12's, if not longer.

ADTOE has the best song, which is "Bridges in the Sky," in my opinion.  But DT12 is a start-to-finish musical and lyrical masterpiece, ranking just a notch behind I&W and Awake, in my opinion.  So my choice is DT12.

Are you sure? What about:

FAS's wah riff,
TEI's Solo,
TPB's "I can see the painting come alive" combined with a guitar (or keyboard, I can't tell) slide coming in on the word "alive", its solo, the "what if, caught in a moment..." bridge,
BTV's beginning ambiance, its solo, its half time outro,
StR's intro, "I believe, the sacrifices in life, give more than they take." and the "ah"s afterwards, lead after 1st verse, choir patch part, 2nd verse, last chorus and outro,
AftR's intro, second verse, bridge,
IT's crazy part from 2:56 to 3:22, "hate div-i-ding us, love rem-in-ding us, of our shared humanity, 6:00 to 6:53, orchestra, "cowards for salVATION!", piano + sticks part, return of main riff, 15:08 to 15:17 slowing down for the outro? (sorry about the poor formatting, I wasn't sure how to put it otherwise without it looking like I just spammed the page to fill it up)

I think these are goosebump moments, personally. Also, this was an easy choice for me: DT12.

ADTOE easily and it's not even in my top 5.  Can't for the life of me figure out why people like DT12 so much.  It's been pasteurized, homogenized, and recycled within an inch of its life.  But whatever...

The new album aged very very quickly.
