Using songs for alarm clocks
« on: August 28, 2014, 04:04:03 PM »
As long as I've had an iPhone (all 15 months), I always set my phone alarm clock with a song. The way I see it, there are two main schools of thought for an alarm clock song:

1. Song that is automatically in-your-face to wake you up.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Paradigm Shift
Symphony X - Evolution (The Grand Design)

2. Song that starts soft/ambient and grows to something in-your-face.

Dream Theater - The Glass Prison
Spock's Beard - Day for Night

Which method do you prefer? What songs do you use for alarms?

Also, if you don't use songs for alarms, that's fine, but there's no need to write a reply saying that.
D - D/F# - G - D - Bm - Bm/A - E/G# - A

For the last year or so, my alarm-signal has been Converge - Fault and Fracture. Imagine waking up to this every morning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMPvknyczCE

In all fairness, it works perfectly. I always fly out of bed and have no idea where I am or what time it is.  :D

If I set my alarm clock to a song it'd be this.

I don't like using music as an alarm clock anymore. I don't like music I enjoy being associated with one of my least favorite moments. A blaring beeper works dandy  :lol

I've been using Mark Knopfler - Dream of the Drowned Submariner for the first alarm for two years already. Very mellow, very pleasant, and I actually don't hate that song after two years of being on alarm, so that really shows, I think. For the second alarm, I'm using Nightwish - Song of Myself, more intense and stimulating. Works great. Getting up at 5 a.m. and never overslept with this scheme, so yep, works great, as I said.  :D
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Yeah, I'd want to lay there and listen to the song and I'd fall asleep again. The beep it has to be.

If I did, something like Paradigm Shift was my first thought.

I have it on anything random from my iPad. Includes the entire Dream Theater, Symphony X, and Rush discographies and most of Iron Maiden, a bunch of my original music, a bunch of ELP and Kansas, and all of Styx minus their few ballads.

Some mornings I wake up to "Tears" by Rush or "Far From Heaven" by DT, and some mornings it's "Inferno" by Symphony X or "Captain America" by Styx.

As a software engineer, I don't set my alarm, ever. I show up in the office after I woke up and had breakfast, whenever that exactly is.

I used to use In your face songs. But then I started to use The moor by opeth and realized that was the perfect alarm song. Because tue build up lasts like 2.30 mins. First of all those electric ambient guitars wake you up, then the acoustic guitars kick for you to not fall asleep again and finally drums and electric guitars for all. At that moment you are totally awake. the trick was trying to be up before Mikael's brutal growls (and trying to sing along with them)  :rollin
Sadly my phone now reproduces only one minute of song  :'(

I thought they scientifically proved that people begin to hate whatever noise their alarm clocks make. I don't want to start hating my favorite songs so I leave it on beeps.

I actually don't require an alarm, provided I set one. Because if I set an alarm, I will wake up five minutes before it goes off. Every time. Five minutes. On the nose. It's kind of uncanny.

Painkiller always does the job. 6:00 is good sometimes too. I guess I like anything with a nice drum intro to get me going.

For my first alarm I use "As I Lie Bleeding" by Evergrey.

Five minutes later "Telos" is my second alarm, as it tells me to wake up NOW.

Anathema's Untouchable pt. 1 is perfect for weekends or days I don't want to leave bed soon. But, it the alarms was set early, I'd go with something badass like Universe in a Ball by Devin Townsend or Paradigm Shift.

I worried about the same thing, so I chose Metallica - Frantic as my alarm clock. I couldn't possibly think any less of the song, and it sure as hell gets you up in a hurry. :lol

I've never used songs for an alarm clock but now this thread is convincing me to do so for the upcoming school year. It'd be anything intense sounding...like Bleed by Meshuggah. Now that I'm thinking about it, Converge's Fault in Fracture would make a good alarm also as Zantera already pointed out  :lol
