Been a long time since I spun this one

I don't think they went completely downhill. ADTOE, 8V, and TA are amazing albums.

I guess I can half agree with 8VM, but every other album is worse than the previous one in my eyes. Except TA, which is decent, but just that. At least there's people who enjoy them

Every album since SDOIT is better than SDOIT. :P

But seriously, though I'm not sure yet how I feel about TA, I can't agree that DT have been on a decline, given that the three albums before TA are three of my top 5 DT albums.

TA was just a bad idea, it's not that bad musically but it isn't great and it's way too bloody long. i've only listened to it a handful of times even now because i don't have the time to dedicate to even just the first disc

i'm not getting the next DT album if it isn't under an hour, tbh

I'll agree that its length makes it harder to get into (it's been out for over two months now and I've listened to it 4 times), but I disagree with all the rest. I like it. I just don't know how much I like it yet, and probably won't for a while tbh.

when i say "isn't great" i mean like "it's fine and i like it but i don't love it and probably never will"
i use great to mean "i adore this, give me more" which is like 8.5+ on my rating scale
and not my roulette rating scale, that one sucked

Okay, fair enough. Then my disagreement is less strong (though I still don't know how well I like it—it could be top 5-6 DT for me or it could come in near the bottom). I think it was a fine idea, but by the nature of the idea, it's so long that it's hard for me to get through. And though I'll get the next DT album no matter what (probably in no small part because I'm way, way more positive than you are on the three albums that preceded TA), I do hope that it fits comfortably on one CD.

I doubt they'll put out another 2CD release.

I do, as you've listened to it like 6 times this week according to last.fm

i mean, that's how i listen to albums i just got :lol

but ok:
it's fine but really nothing special. there's a few things i really dislike (the synth at the start of spark of the archon, the awful falsetto in come hell or high water, and the end of chromatic aberration is still just the worst) but beyond that it's pretty solid, the band is really bad at writing a cohesive song tho, all of the ones above the 8 minute mark are pretty disjointed. there's still a lot to enjoy but i don't see myself continuing to revisit this that much.

Was just about to say. Because this was the first album in this direction of prog that I got, it was really special and stuff, but most of the stuff you mentioned are really weird to me too, the falsetto in Come Hell or High Water is probably part of what makes it my least favorite song on the album, I love the chorus though. Same for Spark of Archon, lovely chorus but that intro is fucking annoying.

Mute and Chromatic Aberration were easily some of my favorite 2015 songs though, I'll never get sick of those. Your Familiar Face and Passage are also on regular spins.

As for cohesiveness, that's definitely their downside, good thing I never really cared if songs were disjointed as long as I like the individual parts. Fossil Genera for example, or Mute/Chromatic Aberration.

I've got sick of "Ka-ra-zu Ni-mu-pa-tu he has created us from the point of view we did not choose we are all broken singing" from my very first listen. And what's worse, I still remember how it goes. :lol

yeah if not for the lyrics there that part would be pretty cool but wooowwww that's so dumb

the plotline of the album is really dumb, tho. someone on rym described it as "friendzoned: the album" and i have not been able to take it remotely serious since

disc 1.
pretty emotionally potent stuff but if you don't really pay attention to it well enough it also fades into the background pretty easily
