Red Seas under Red Skies was my favorite of that trilogy. My son says I'm crazy, but for me, it was the most fun of them all.

I'm just over a hundred pages in, I love it so far. The sheer size of balls these guys have continues to astonish me. :lol

Alright, this book officially has the best quote of the series so far. :rollin

Quote
...how the hell was he going to explain what had happened to the ship? Some nautical technicality?

'Squiggle-fucked the rightwise cock-swabber with a starboard jib,' he whispered to himself, 'when I should've used a larboard jib.'

Gonna start in on rereading the Earthsea series tonight in honor of Ursula Le Guin's passing.  :-[

Just found out about this today, very sad news. The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness are among my absolute favourite books by any writer.

Finished Red Seas Under Red Skies and loved it even more than the first book in the series. What an awesome discovery.

Turning away from fantasy for a bit to finish Kenzie/Gennaro series with Moonlight Mile by Dennis Lehane.

Lehane rarely, if ever, disappoints. As far as the Kenzie/Genarro books, I've only read the first two, A Drink Before the War and Darkness, Take My Hand. I think Sacred is next, which I gotta hunt down soon. If you like Lehane, he released a new book last year called Since We Fell and it was pretty good.

Going to brag a bit if you don't mind. This last book I recently finished became the 1,000th thing I shelved on my Read pile (that includes some graphic novels, scripts, and some children's books). I'm sure there's a few I have forgotten to include on my shelf, because every so often I'm like, oh I've read that.

Anyway, to the book I am currently undergoing. Last year, his The Child Thief was one of my favorites of 2017. Now, I'm reading his latest: Lost Gods by Brom

I thought Sacred was a bit over the top (or maybe more than a bit), but the next one, Gone, Baby, Gone was an absolute blast of a book. Loved that one.

I also have Since We Fell waiting on my bookshelf, bought it last year but didn't get to read it yet. I'm looking forward to it though. :tup

Moonlight Mile was alright as a closing book in the series, but I don't think the continuation of one of the earlier book plots was a good idea, and also it's almost always hilarious to read books with Russian mafia in them. A mixed bag of a book, all in all. If I had to rank Kenzie/Gennaro series, I would've gone with Gone, Baby, Gone > Prayers for Rain > Darkness, Take My Hand > Sacred = Moonlight Mile > A Drink Before the War.

Next up, the book about which contents I have not a slightest clue, by the author I've never heard of, The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley.

With this year being the centennial of the ending of World War I, I thought I would educate myself with some books on the subject, starting with The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman

How was this one? I'm currently reading Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger, which is phenomemal, and want to continue my WWI binge.

I almost gave up on They Came to Bahgdad at the halfway point, but I stuck with it. It was ok, but I kind of regret finishing it. My wife brought up a good point: "Why slog through a bad book when there are literally millions of other books to read?". That will probably be my mindset moving forward.

Waiting on a few books from Amazon, so in the meantime I picked up Foreign Agent by Brad Thor.

Reagan: The Life by H.W. Brands. For the rest of the year, I decided to read at least one big book a month off of my TBR. Each one was picked by random number generator, and this was decided for February. Time to learn about the President of my childhood

Do magazine articles count?  I'm reading The White Darkness.  A descendant of Ernest Shackelton's crew is attempting a solo crossing of Antarctica through the south pole on foot.  (if you know the outcome of his trek, please don't spoil it..)

The Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis: Volume 1 edited by Walter Hooper. I became interested in reading collections of correspondences when I read the two collections of Hunter S. Thompson's letters from a few years back, which I really enjoyed, so it's lately been a sub genre that I've become interested in

You should give Griffin and Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence a try, but you need to see the physical books since the letters are removable letters and postcards. It's an interesting trilogy.

Finished The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley. Yeah, this one didn't go really well with me, to be honest. For three different points of view, I was interested in only one—the other protagonist spent his time doing jackshit for like 3/4 of the novel despite an exciting beginning which was his first chapter—and yet another protagonist had only few chapters in the whole novel (and I thought her setting was the most exciting of all three) and ended up being absolutely inept at anything which actually made me facepalm a few times. Now to mention I thought the plot was a bit boring and the twists were mostly obvious.

Oh well, maybe I'm just not into the grim and dark fantasy anymore, because this book has a lot of glowing reviews. Not going to continue with that trilogy.

Instead, I'm returning to Scott Lynch and starting Republic of Thieves. If the first two books are any indication, this is going to be a much better read.

Went on a trip some weeks ago and read the manga Uzumaki by Junji Ito. Very original horror based not on monsters or paranormal crap, but on a pattern, a spiral, that haunts a town. It's got a fantastic art style to it, very detailed and slightly into the uncanny, and the plot goes in many unexpected directions. It's mature and dark, and I highly recommend it. There's a wonderful hardcover edition, get that one.

And finally finished Song of Susannah, which was great! I don't really know why people think low of this book, it had great action, lots of lore and twists excellent scenes as usual.

Before tackling The Dark Tower, I want to delve into House of Leaves.
