Some recent gig pics

92 degrees in the shade, and by the end of the afternoon, JT (drummer) and I were not in the shade. There was a nice breeze, though, which made it bearable. That thing JT is wearing that looks like a bullet-proof vest is actually made of freezer packs. He puts it in the freezer the night before, brings it to outdoor gigs in a cooler, and puts it on right before we start. You can also see two industrial floor fans (the kind they use to dry carpeting) aimed at him.

It was so hot that most people stayed way out to the edges where there were trees and shade. So it was weird playing to people like 50 yards away. Made it hard to engage the audience.

Back home after vacation in the northwest. I have over 700 photos to go through and tons of videos, but I posted this one on facebook while away so I'll share it here:

My girlfriend and I at Crater Lake in Oregon. Crater lake is a collapsed volcano that formed the deepest lake in the US and over time the volcano grew back out of the lake. Really cool sight, sadly almost the entire park was still closed due to snow, but this view was worth it.

There was a beautiful open green where a few people sat, and you can see the tent where the board and soundman were, but it was really hot and for the most part, people wanted to sit in the shade, which meant sitting under the trees which lined the edges of the park. It was kinda weird.

That's how it is when we have played Tour de Cure for the past few years. And it's a gig where people aren't coming to see the band per se; we are just there as background entertainment for folks supporting the racers and having lunch. We figure we are playing for ourselves, and if some of the folks there enjoy what we are doing, great.

I wish it was that kind of gig, where they were just there for something anyway and we were over at one end playing. No pressure at all, and if anyone even pays attention to you, it's a plus.

But this was the first of the summer "Concerts in the Park" series, which is every Sunday afternoon during the summer. It was pretty cool landing the gig and we were psyched. But it was hot as hell, the P.A. kept cutting out (never did figure out if it was overheating or what, though that seems likely) and the bass rig finally melted down just as we were starting our last song. We tried like hell to get that last song in, including plugging the bass directly into the board (which should've worked but didn't) and finally the guy from the park district came up and told us it was okay, we could just stop. So we finished not with a bang, but a whimper.

But what the hell. Got to play outside, check out some babes, and even made $100, so it was still a good day.
