When I was thinking of this thread, I was initially gonna make the limit twenty minutes, but then realized I wouldn't be able to include CttE, so that became the standard. :lol

It's your thing, so you can make the rules, whatever the hell you want.

1. Rush - 2112
2. Dream Theater - Octavarium
3. The Mars Volta - Cassandra Gemini (I don't know if these counts. It's one song, but it's broken up over multiple tracks because their label are a bunch of dicks. I'll change it if anyone objects)
4. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm
6. Edge of Sanity - Crimson
7. Yes - The Gates of Delirium
8. King Crimson - Lizard
9. Transatlantic - Duel with the Devil
10. Swans - Bring The Sun / Toussaint L'Ouverture

Ok, got mine down to twelve songs. I'll contemplate the cut and order in the next few days, but for now....

1- Six Degrees
3- Milliontown
5- Retrospective (Silent Memorial)
4- Close to the Edge
7- Echoes
6- 2112
The Dream (Pyramid Theorem)
8- Lake of Emotions (Maestrick)
10- Revalations (Lalu)
2- Narrow Margin (IQ)
9- Suppers Ready
Thick as a Brick

Kinda hard to pick among all the great Yes/DT/IQ ones man...

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IX)

Is this allowed? It's technically more than one track.

Hmmmm, if I get three peeps to agree, I'll allow it. Yay or nae folks....

I vote "Yay".  It's definitely an epic and a single piece of music, even if it's divided into separate tracks on the album.

I'll be the second "Yay". The fact that it's separated into two tracks is irrelevant; it's two parts of the same whole, it's one song.

I say a resounding YES - like Orbert posted, even though it's separated into two tracks they're both part of a larger whole.

Adding a "Yay". It might book-end the album, but it's still one composition in my ears.

Does A Pleasant Shade of Gray by Fates Warning count? The band members have said it's one song, but it was divided into multiple tracks for the sake of convenience (like Six Degrees).

I'm gonna say no, cause that's a concept album, not a song. Six Degrees is a song on an album.

But it is one song, it's as much of a song as SDOIT is. Why would you consider one to be a song and not the other just because one album doesn't have any other songs?

Same thing with Transatlantic's The Whirlwind, that's one song too.

I had a change of heart over a cig and a thrilling action scene in Thor. If it is a continuous piece of music a concept album is acceptable.

I haven't heard A Pleasant Shade of Grey, and am not gonna spin it now, so I'm gonna trust you guys. The Whirlwind is in too.

Now I'm going to bed soon, so let's not have too many more questions while I sleep, ok? :lol

Stratovarius: Elysium

I was going to put this one in too, but it was 30 seconds too short.  :'(

Ah crap , so it is  ;D  Edited out.

That was actually one of the first ones I think of.  One of the greatest longer tracks I've heard for quite some time.

Yeah, this really annoys me. Definitely in my Top 5 epics ever. But you're the boss RJ. :lol

Good thing you had a change of heart, because you'd have to exclude Light of day, Day of Darkness as well.

Trying to debate whether I throw in a couple of sleepers that not too many people know, or just go with the staples.

*snip - reposted on page 4*

Will go play my Epic play list this morning to chose the remaining three

10. Spock's Beard - The Light

Studio version is only 15:33.  Doesn't meet criteria - otherwise I may have voted for it too.

I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

My favorite Yes epic, but often overlooked in (or disqualified from) discussions of epics because it's not long enough or wasn't the entire album side.  No single piece of music says "epic" to me more than "Awaken" by Yes.

Without live music, this was actually pretty easy. But then, with live music, it probably would've all been Grateful Dead, Shakti, Allman Brothers and Keith Jarrett.

1 Mars Volta - Cassandra Geminni
2 Yes - Close to the Edge
3 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Rockets Fall on Rocket Falls
4 Herbie Hancock - Wandering Spirit Song
5 Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Jewleh Lal
6 Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
7 King Crimson - Lizard
8 Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Storm
9 Miles Davis – Bitches Brew

A group over 15 minutes that doesn't make the cutoff, but would have all been contenders.
Miles Davis - Shhh/Peaceful
Charles Mingus – Modes D, E and F of Black Saint and the Sinner Lady (I was tempted to include the entire album, as it's all one suite, but whatever)
Sergei Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto No. 3, 1st Movement
Miles Davis – Spanish Key
LTE – When the Water Breaks

I can see that list....

3- Grateful Dead- Darkstar (Fillmore, March 26, 1977)
4- Grateful Dead- I Know You Rider/ChinaCat Sunflower (Winterland, December 31, 1981)
5- etc.....

Good thing you had a change of heart, because you'd have to exclude Light of day, Day of Darkness as well.

And Misplaced Childhood as well.

Awaken at 15:37 says hello and then walks off the field with it's head down.

I probably love Awaken as much if not more than anybody else here. but there had to be a cutoff point. Plus with the door open to 15 minute songs, the decision would have been way too hard for me.

I think Pendulous Skin by Mastodon should be included.

I not too familiar with Mastadon, why wouldn't it be?

I realise this is just an example, but Dark Star wasn't played from 10/18/74 to 12/31/78  :-*

Not to mention that both the Fillmore East and West closed in '71, and Winterland at the end of '78.

Last two slots are pretty difficult. Lots of good contenders.

EDIT: Filled the last two spots. Really kills me that Echoes didn't make it cause of the one per band rule, but it'll have to do.
