And Redemption. Same singer from FW but I like him in Redemption more. I recommend Snowfall on Judgment Day, awesome album.

When I'm in the mood for something DT-ish but not DT, I reach for side projects of the guys in the band. I don't have much progressive music otherwise (other than Floyd, Genesis, and Rush, etc), so for me it's usually things like:

Neal Morse
Transatlantic
OSI
PSMS
Flying Colors
The Winery Dogs
Adrenaline Mob
Rising Power
Avenged Sevenfold
Mullmuzzler/James LaBrie
Frameshift
Winter Rose
Eden's Curse
Tim Donahue
John Petrucci
Liquid Tension Experiment
Dominici
Jordan Rudess

Just looking at this list, it makes me realise how much music you can get to listen to while still listing to any of the guys from the band! And most of it is still amazing, IMO.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
WELP.

Amaze Knight

Anthriel

Beyond The Bridge

Those will be a decent start.  There are more, but I don't want to overwhelm you  ;)

I would have to recommend the band Redemption.  Their 2009 album Snowfall on Judgment Day has some skull-crushing progressive metal, while still maintaining deep emotion and beauty.  It is easily one of my top albums from the past decade.

I just listened to the song that features James, and will try out the full album later today. This is some great stuff. :tup

Hourglass is another band with a pretty obvious Dream Theater influence.

Their most recent album, "Oblivious To The Obvious" is pretty killer.  Lots of great riffs, melodies and great musicianship.

This too, too.  SFoJD is better than a couple DT albums.

Sorry to be pedantic and all, but shouldn't this go in GMD? I mean, its main purpose is recommending bands OTHER than DT.

I think maybe the thread would be better utilized if people recommending these bands elaborated on why they would appeal TO DT fans. Like, saying, "This band has great musicianship," or "This band has really long songs with a lot of changes." Or you know, go even deeper with music nerd speak, talking about the use of dissonance and things like that.

Lots of great bands already suggested; I would add Sun Caged and Lemur Voice if you can find them.

In fairness, most of the bands suggested are basically just Dream Theater with different singers and occasionally an interesting take on the genre.

Although I haven't really listened to his recent stuff, I don't think Devin Townshend applies to that formula... I could be wrong though. All that comes to mind when I hear his name is SYL.

Seventh Wonder.

Check out The Great Escape if you're in the mood for a 30-minute epic.

I tried to find The Great Escape online, but all I found was (yuck!) a Journey cover band. (Yeesh!)

I'm not sure if you meant (a) that you couldn't find it, or (b) Seventh Wonder sounds like a Journey cover band.
If it's (a), take Shadow Ninja's advice. If it's (b), you are crazy.

I'd be curious to know what he tried.

I guess if you just Googled it, something else might come up. Hang on, I'm gonna try that.

I got a movie, and a song by Boys Like Girls. To get the Journey thing I had to google "The Great Escape band" which wouldn't make any sense at all.

His solo stuff is a lot different than SYL.

But it isn't like DT.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.
