ADTOE - Very consistent, even if it doesn't necessarily hit the highs of SC or even DT12. I like every song on the album.
SC - Aims high and misses often as a result, but the good songs more than make up for the rest. Also one of the most fun DT albums to listen to.

DT12 - Has a couple of good songs, but more than half don't leave much of an impression on me. Plus the crap mastering makes this really hard to listen to.

BC&SL - Very little I enjoy on this. All the songs (except Wither) feel incredibly bloated, overlong, and stale. Just overall the lazy song-writing and weak lyrics make this one of the more forgettable DT albums.

DT12 for me, but still got to say that for me BC&SL probably has the best drums and guitar sound (after ToT) of all time

It's clear from the poll which pair of albums people prefer !

Also it shows which is everyone's least favourite ;D

It's like 3 polls in one !

It also shows that song writing is more important the production to most people. Having said that, I don't think the production on ADTOE is bad at all but BC&SL is a great sounding album.

I voted ADTOE. I think given everything that happened, they came out with a really strong album which I think is a huge credit to the guys.

Not really. None of these albums really has great production, with ADTOE being the only one with noticeably worse production than the rest in the poll. The others are about equal, all things considered. And songwriting is thoroughly subjective, so that's just opinion.

This poll only shows that a lot more people on DTF prefer ADTOE and DT12. No surprises there.

I'll never understand the hate for DT12's production. I think it sounds great, I can hear every instrument clearly and that drum sound is fantastic!  :hefdaddy I think it's their best produced album in a very long time.

Granted it's their most in your face album production wise but that snare sound really ruins some songs.

The HD mix sounds better but there's not a huge difference.

Snare is too loud and overheads are too quiet.

The in your face mix wears thin by the end of the album.

Octavarium is my favourite for production.

So much this, i really like the in-your-face kind of thing with the snare, not so much the sound itself, but can clearly hear everything.

That sounds familiar, probably either on the Chaos in Progress or Chaos in Motion DVDs. I don't recall them giving any other numbers.
I think that number is mostly the amount of time they spend in the studio writing and recording, rather than impacting the quality of the mixing and mastering.

Noup, i think it happened during a TMS if not mistaking. But, yeah time on studio sounds reasonable since they almost spend 3 or 4 months.

Noticably worse?

Nah.

The only complaints I have about ADTOE's production are minor such as the drums being a bit tame sounding.

None of the four albums sound "bad" but the first two definitely have a more "chunky" sound.  Works well for those albums but it does not make the production "better"

I'm going to be mostly alone on this, but SC is the best of them for me. I rank all of them close together at the bottom, but I loved BCASL when it came out, and I still enjoy SC a lot when I listen to it. ADTOE and DT12 were never great albums for me.

ADTOE..Easily.

I agree. Blob doesn't agree but I think it was their most DT sounding album in a while.

It's quite a solid album, but it's just consistently average for me for the most part. No big high points or top DT songs imo, and the production sounds like a rough pre-mix. But it's not bad.

I'm going with Blob again!

idk, snare sounds great to me. I'd even venture to say it's my favorite drum sound on a Dream Theater album. Everything sounds crystal clear and I can really hear the intricacies of Mangini's drumming. This was difficult on ADTOE.

Octavarium is great too. I think my favorite for production would be a tossup between FII and Six Degrees. It's still too early to say for sure, but I can see DT12 competing with those two albums.

ADTOE for me. The weak sounding drums go as far as to ruin a few songs.

I'd rank them in the order they were released, but reverse (SC is by far my least favorite DT album).

WRT production I'd say none of these albums are produced awfully well.  The only one that sounds alright is BCSL, and it really only just sounds alright.  Luckily I'm able to put up with lackluster production if the songwriting is good and the songwriting on the most recent two albums has been very good.
