SDOIT and DT12.

The first one being so good while so different then Scenes and everything they had done before, the second one being their best since SDOIT.

came in here to say the Happy Holidays 2013 album was an amazing surprise!

a few things from the MP days too, that first batch of Ytsejam records (with the Majesty demos) was so cool. I remember thinking "jeez, every six months we're gonna get more??" It turned out to be about every year, but still, those were the most exciting releases for me from 2003-2009. Also, the orchestra coming out for the RCMH performance was AWESOME!
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
WELP.

F5 on the new album comes to mind.

Probably this too, as well as SDV and TSF being played live.

The fact that they didn't need Portnoy to still make good music.
and the last 2 albums without MP are better than the last 2 with him, IMHO.

I think they're better than the last 4. I have DT12 and ADTOE ranked in 5th and 6th.
I feel strangely honored to be following up a post from Sir Walrus Cauliflower.

I put DT12 right near the bottom (above WDADU obviously, not sure about anything else), and ADTOE about level with BCASL just above that. I consider SC better than all 3 of them.
It's sadly getting to the point where a great DT album would be a positive surprise worthy of posting in this thread for me. :(
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Beauty is purely in the eyes of the beholder because I see DT12 as a top 5 career album, so I'm quite pleased as a fan these days. ADTOE is also top 5 for me as well.

As much as a disagree with this, I love the variety of opinions about DT.
I can completely disagree with you about the placement of the most recent albums, and still agree completely about SDOIT.

I really, really love the music and most of the lyrics on ADTOE, but the mixing and mastering of that album just plain doesn't sound good.  I've never understood how such an immensely talented group could or would sign off on a final mix that sounds that way.  These guys have the means, the equipment and the talent to produce some incredible recordings.  I wish they'd use all of the resources they can -including some objective third-party feedback- for their next studio session.

I'd agree that the last two album have certainly been positive surprises and that they were both better than the last few MP studio releases.  Do DT12 and ADTOE have their flaws? Absolutely. But for me, they were both a step up from what the band had previously been doing the 4 or so years before that.

I can't remember if I replied to this before or not, but for me:
- Cleaning Out The Closet (Cover My Eyes!!!!)
- The Falling Into Infinity Ytsejam release
- The covers released along with BC&SL
- The Uncovered Ytsejam release

How so? I don't have many complains about that mixing, only that Rudess is a little low in some solos of OTBOA.

Probably Jordan on the self titled album. I always liked his playing but on every album there were sections or solos that were too much for me. But on DT he is perfect IMO :tup

Last time I was positively surprised was Breaking All Illusions.

Can that Q&A be read somewhere?  I'm relatively new to this forum (though not DT; I bought Images and Words when it was the "current" album).

There's no transcript (as far as I know), but you can watch the hour-long video by clicking on the OP link in this thread: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=39047.0 There was also another chat when LALP came out, but it was a little shorter and MM didn't take part in it.

Yeah, that was fun.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

ADTOE for sure.

After three albums that left me feeling pretty cold about DT getting ADTOE was a huge step in the right direction for me. I loved it start to finish.

First listen to DT12, the bass mix on that album, the setlist on the current tour in general and the inclusion of SDV and the SFAM encore in particular, and how well SDV works with the altered arrangement they use for it.
