The Free Republic
« on: May 28, 2014, 02:32:57 PM »
I've been spending a lot of time on http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/*/index and am absolutely disgusted. I don't know why I find myself frequenting this website. Maybe it's like a terrible car wreck that you can't take your eyes off of. Now, I don't know the over all percentage of the population that thinks like these people, but they are terrifying. Put it this way, these people think Alex Jones and Rush followers are crazy... think about that for a second.

These people vote, and it makes me mad. I kind of wish there was an area that we could just give them and let them all move there. Keep them out of our legislation and let them govern themselves.

This isn't me hating on republicans. I classify these people into a whole different realm of psychotic.

Here are some gems to better articulate the point I'm trying to make;

Quote
“Be careful what you wish for!!! California was a wonderful place until we got “popular” with the East Coast Rats, Southern Blacks and of course, the Gays. After these groups arrived, they “arranged” for the Mexicans so they had someone to cut their grass.”

Quote
“While I'm opposed to the concept of EBT in general and certainly for the purchase of firearms, as long as the program is what it is, I'd be willing to compromise and allow EBT benefits to be used for the purchase of a hunting license...at least that way you know the recipients are willing to do at least some work for some of their food and in fact, are performing a service in the management of wildlife.”

Quote
“I think the guy wearing the vest is stupider, but you’re right it’s a hard call.”

Quote
“I wrote on the back of my driver’s license that I am not an organ donor. I will never have myself placed on a wait list for an organ. To me, it is hugely immoral to actively hope that someone who is alive and healthy right now will die so that I can get their organs. It is as if other people are nothing but walking organ farms waiting to be harvested.”

Yeah, so your point?  :lol

Seriously, I get where you're coming from. And to be fair, EBT useable for hunting licenses is a fine idea. I get that there's an unpleasant sentiment behind his thoughts, but his proposal is sound.

My problem with the EBT one (maybe I'm thinking like a New Englander here) is that the majority of people around me who use EBT live in cities and large, low cost developments. There's not a deer for miles, let alone enough to satisfying the meat needs of a whole city.

Interstingly enough, the city of Helena, MT culls their urban dear and gives it to the food banks.

Yeah, a lot of our dear go to charity, as well. Shame I'm not quite that poor yet. Of course there isn't any urban dear down here.

Out of curiosity, who does the deed in Helena? Animal control? Johnny? Posse?

Volunteer Johnny's. It's almost exclusively with traps, occasionally they tranquilize them, then euthanize them.

Frankly, I don't see anything from the FreeRepublic that generally shocks me. That first one almost sounds like satire.

The sad thing is that it's not satire. Spend a good fifteen minutes or so looking around that forum and you'll see what I'm talking about.

^ This.  I've seen enough of the ultra-conservative side of politics in this country to know that the attitudes being expressed on FreeRepublic are hardly anything new.  For example, I remember a few years ago when I was at a TGI Friday's with some friends seeing an interview on some television news network with a batshit insane pastor who claimed that Muslims can never be real Americans because they owe their allegiance to Allah over all else.   ::)  Also, have you ever heard of Conservapedia, the right-wing answer to Wikipedia's perceived "liberal bias"? http://conservapedia.com/Main_Page  Just browse that for a little while if you want to make yourself mad, laugh, cry, or all of the above.  While stuff like this does make me lose my faith in humanity in general, and Americans in particular, just a little bit more every day, I've just kind of learned to laugh it off at this point.  Odds are these wackos will never gain any real substantive power over the US government, and if Americans were actually stupid enough to elect these kinds of nutjobs to lead them, well, then we kind of would deserve to have Russia and China nuke us off the face of the planet.

On that note, I found this humorous little tidbit on FreeRepublic reading a post about how Russia and China are threats to world security (read: threats to American hegemony):

Quote
An anti-Western axis led by Russia and China is a clear and present danger to world peace and American national security.

So two countries who have hated each other and been fighting over territory for nearly 300 years (and, aside from a brief moment of formal alliance in the 1950's, still hate each other to this day) are apparently leading an "Anti-Western Axis" together?   :lol

The article is actually pretty rational but wow are those comments awful. I don't think I've ever seen people filled with so much ignorance, hate, and stupidity.

I'd be willing to bet that at least 95% of the people on that board vote in every election they are eligible for. And while I don't think there's a whole lot of people that think as harshly as they do, I think there are plenty that vote like they do.

Internet "anonymity" is pretty much the scourge of the modern internet era.  All one has to do is look at the comments in ANY comments section on ANY website that allows anonymous posts.  There is something about being anonymous (or believing you are anonymous) that just seems to bring out the most vile and disgusting side of human behavior.  It's simultaneously frustrating and sad.  :-\

I think the behavior has been the same as it has always been. The internet just allows more eyes to see it.

I think it's more a function of the person's personality, rather than the anonymity. I doubt anybody here has spouted off more contentious opinions than me over the years [EPICVIEW excluded], and I'm more than happy to meet people here and have on several occasions.

But the difference with you is that

1) You present all your arguments in an intellectual manner.
2) You use proper language and vocabulary.
3) You speak resepctfully
4) You don't just shit out your mouth and turn a thread about people stealing bikes in NYC into a thread about Obama being a socialist from Kenya.
5) You bring in sources other than the New York Post and Fox News
6) Your responses are always well thought out and you never leave grey area

There's probably more I can list, but I want to go home now.

edit*

Case in point, you would never in a million years post something like this.

No, but I did find it pretty funny. Since they didn't have a military uniform for LBJ, they should have had a picture of him waving Jumbo around. That actually was part of his working outfit.

And what does BC's HS stand for?

Hurricanes with feminine names cause more damage than storms with masculine names: study

Quote
A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that, for Atlantic Coast hurricanes in the U.S., storms with feminine names lead to more deaths than those with masculine names. The best explanation for this, according to the Economist, is that people do not take hurricanes with women’s names as seriously as storms with men’s names.

That's awesome. And an easy fix, to boot. All male hurricanes will be named Artie, Chase, Earnest and Fabian. All female hurricanes will be named Bertha, Doris, Helga and Xena.
