What am I missing that makes CT so great?
This. I played the DS version and it really bored me  :lol The combats are slow, the story predictable and shallow - but the music was awesome though . Matter of tastes, I guess.

I just can't play JRPGs at all anymore, they're too tedious and slow
Persona 4 was probably the last one I played through to completion and that was over 3 years ago that I played it

I've played both games and I feel like Chrono Cross just falls short of living up to its predecessor. The music isn't quite as memorable,  the battle system doesn't feel as good, boss fights feel less rewarding when you when, and the story is sort of a clusterfuck that they probably needed another disk to explain properly.

Well, i like the battle system and music equally but, talking about story and characters, i go with Chrono Trigger, simple but great presentation.

I have not played this one, though I have been recommended it several times. I have access to SNES, PS, and DS; which version is the best?

Well, the Playstation version will be pretty cheap on PSN (both it and Cross are on sale this week, in fact), but the DS version is the most complete and has improved translation. Up to you if an extra $20~$30 is worth the better translation and some extra bosses.

No real reason to get the SNES version...for one it's absurdly expensive. Quick eBay search shows the lowest one being around $55, with most being $100 or more. The Playstation version is the same as SNES one with anime cutscenes and a sort of meta-system to keep track of which endings you've recieved.

Alright I got one, good enough:

1 - Silent Hill 2
PS2 - Konami - 2001

Completely out of left field, we conclude with a Horror game. The greatest ever made. Silent Hill 2 is a work of art.

Let's start with the obvious aspect: The horror. This game is scary in a way no other game I've played has replicated. The atmosphere is perfectly crafted, and the time when nothing is happening is often the scariest part of the game. Every Silent Hill game made in Japan was scary in a unique way, and I think Silent Hill 2 did it best. Everything is oppressive. Compare Silent Hill 3, which is just terrifying, so you tend to want to run as fast as possible and cower in a corner somewhere. Silent Hill 2 makes you want to move slowly because a nightmare could be around any corner. The game makes me physically uncomfortable to play, and I mean that as a compliment.

The story is outstanding. It is deep, psychological, and profoundly disturbing, and probably features the best twist ending in the history of video games.

One complaint one might make about the game is the poor voice acting. I actually feel like this is a positive factor in the game. To be clear, I don't think that any of what I'm about to describe was intentional, and I'm not talking about the HD Remaster, because I haven't really played it: Sometimes with bad voice acting, you get this feeling like the characters are standing in different rooms just saying stuff at each other. The emotions in their voices are all wrong, they don't seem to really react to what the other person says…overall it's very unnatural. In this game, it works perfectly. The characters are all tormented, all seeing different versions of the town based on their issues. So it makes sense that James and Angela don't sound natural when they talk to each other. It also makes everyone really creepy. REALLY creepy. It works.

The music is another major factor here. Series composer Akira Yamaoka really shines here, with both excellent themes like Theme of Laura or Promise, and disturbing atmospheric music and industrial noise.

I love Silent Hill, and this is definitely the best game in the series. Everyone should play it. Unless you're chicken.

Amazing choice. I've only played the first SH, which was decent but I didn't understand the story :lol. I've also heard nothing but praise to this one, so I might play it soon.
Well, actually... I downloaded it (yeah,  :yarr) on my PC, played a bit of the beginning - but the controls were horrible  ???. Is the PS2 version decent control-wise? I remember hating the camera, that's why. I also remember reading somewhere that the HD version/remake was awful, so I don't know where and how to play it D:

PC director's cut is where I put the most time into it. The issue with the PS3 port was patched (I think? It may have been that either SH2 was patched and 3 was unfixable or vice versa). As far as the controls and the camera these are pluses in my opinion. It has the option to switch between what it calls 2D and 3D control: one is tank controls(left and right turn, forward moves in the direction you're facing, back steps backward), the other is a camera-relative one like you're probably used to. However I'd still recommend sticking to tank controls...the game works better if it's clunky :lol

Remember part of the point of Silent Hill is that you're Joe Schmo, not some badass (fucking Homecoming), and combat is something to be avoided. The clunky controls help to make that a reality. The fixed camera is pretty much a horror game staple. Some of my favorite SH moments would be impossible without it (THE FUCKING FACE ROOM). So yeah.

Yup, Golem Overlord is certainly the greatest boss fight of its time. :neverusethis:

Jokes aside, it's an amazing game, and I really need to beat it again soon.

Fuck man, you screwed up your #1 choice, you had it. E.T. > SH2, everybody knows that.

But seriously, I remember back then when this game came out and watching my cousin playing it. Shit, I think I was more scared than him and I was just watching. But fuuny how things change. Now I'm the one who'll play the horror games like Outlast with him watching instead.

I remember when Silent Hill 1 came out my Dad rented it from Blockbuster (man, remember Blockbuster?) and watched some parts of it (obviously he didn't show me much) but I remember being terrified by totally innocuous things, like one area has empty diving suits hanging on the wall that I thought were bodies :lol

Top 5 Scariest SH Moments:
5) That goddamn cat (1)
4) Happy Birthday Call (3)
3) Face Room (4)
2) This is a personal one from 2, my first time playing the game I ran around in a panic most of the time and after completing collecting the pieces needed to complete a certain puzzle, when you return to the room the puzzle is in Pyramid Head can be seen waiting behind a steel grate you're trying to get past. An unsettling moment on its own, but in my hurry to progress and get out of the scary apartment building I barely caught a glimpse of him before entering the door. I went back outside to confirm what I had seen and he had disappeared. Unintentional but extra freaky
1) Silent Hill 4 has a lot of really great, subtle, missable scares, the best of which may be the best in the series: After the fifth victim is attacked, when you look through the peephole into your neighbour's apartment, the stuffed animal which had been sitting in her room now has its head turned directly towards you.

soooo, it seems I am up.

First, my dirty little secret.  I'm not much of a gamer.  In fact, these days, with two young children, work, gym, and finding time to spend with my wife, I hardly ever play video games anymore.  And even when I did play video games, I usually did not play very many or a wide variety.  Once I latched onto a game or two that I liked, I played the crap out of it.  So I'm basically taking this opportunity to stroll down memory lane a bit and reminisce about several games that I've spent the most time with.

I grew up mostly in the 80's and aside from those glorious trips to the local arcade at the mall, I've had an Atari 2600, TI-99/4A, NES, PC, Gameboy, Playstation 1, XBOX, and XBOX 360.  My list will include at least one entry for each platform (including Arcade).  I expect that this list will raise quite a few eyebrows and garner its share of WTF's.

I'll list a few honorable mentions later today, and hopefully get #25 up sometime after that.

My family had Parsec, including the voice thing.

Parsec was such a frustrating game at times.  It was sort of like a side-scrolling version of Galaga where ships would attack you in certain patterns, etc.  But your ship could overheat if you shot too much with your laser cannon.  Plus the laser was so thin you had to have a direct hit to destroy the enemies.  Then you had to refuel by maneuvering your ship through those narrow cave-like tunnels in the pic above.  One touch of a part of the tunnel and you were toast.

a few more HMs

Donkey Kong - 1983 - TI-99/4A: ported to a billion different systems, but I mostly played it on the TI

Miner 2049er - 1984 - TI-99/4A: sort of like Donkey Kong, but better.  This game had 10 different screens/maps vs 4 for DK.

1943: The Battle of Midway - 1988 - NES: Awesome weapons power-ups and special attacks

Legendary Wings - 1988 - NES: Another flying game with weapon power ups.  2-player co-op.
