I really like some of the games in this list so far. Your top 10 should be awesome. Also, I would like to be added to the wait list please.

Touhou is probably the only game I've played from this list (except Oblivion), and the series are certainly ruthless. I have enough pride to not click "easy" or "normal" every time, and it turns out to be a great amount of suffering. Seriously, this game requires a lot of concentration and patience. In the past, I used to play it before my Starcraft II matches, along with osu! to get warmed up.

Oh boy :lol

I've never beaten any game on hard. I've beaten most of them with no continues on easy (except for Perfect Cherry Blossom because FUCK that, and Ten Desires and Double Dealing Character because they're so new), and I've beaten...I think just Imperishable Night on Normal? I've only even managed to get to Remilia once, certainly never beaten her. Hardest thing I've done is get through like six of Mokou's spell cards before dying. I love Touhou but honestly I suck pretty bad.

10 - Blazblue
PS3/Xbox 360/Arcade – Arc System Works – 2008-2014

Another fighting game, and again I don't really feel like I can pick a favorite. I would tend towards saying the most recent iteration, but to be honest I probably played Continuum Shift the most, so go with that.

Basically, Blazblue is like a shinier version of Guilty Gear with an extremely complicated plotline. The story mode of Blazblue is so long that for the most recent game, Chrono Phantasma, has a story mode so long that skipping through all of the dialog so I could unlock a character took something like four hours. Maybe fifteen minutes of that was fighting. Now, the story is great, it's just maybe a bit too great, too in depth and based around character development and huge conspiracies to work for a fighting game. This is probably because it was originally intended to be a JRPG.

I have to imagine the Blazblue RPG would have been one of the best ever made, and probably ranked even higher on this list, but it is what it is.

Blazblue's music is composed by Daisuke Ishiwatari, who also composed the music for Guilty Gear. Here, we see his craft elevated to a whole new level. Liberal usage of choirs and keyboards along with badass metal riffs and face melting solos make the soundtrack for this game one of my all-time favorites. A few tracks to check out: Rebellion, Queen of Rose, MOTOR HEAD, Gluttony Fang, Plastic Night, X-Matic… again, much like Guilty Gear, pretty much the whole soundtrack is great.

Gameplay-wise, the combat is slightly less face-paced than Guilty Gear, but still makes Street Fighter look like slugs on heroin. It has a pretty innovative button scheme. Like many fighting games, it has buttons A, B, and C, by default Square, Triangle, and Circle on Playstation, which equate to Light, Medium, and Heavy attacks. The D button (X) is where it stands out. This button has a completely different function for each character. For the main character Ragna, attacks done using the D button drain health from his enemies. For Rachel Alucard, pressing D and a direction causes wind to blow in that direction which she can use to move faster. Carl Clover uses his D button to control a robot-like companion in battle.

The unique and creative uses of the D button allow for huge diversity between characters, and no character plays like another. Even Hazama and Terumi, who are actually the same person and whose A, B, and C attacks, as well as their supers, are mostly the same, are made distinct by the completely different functions of their D button. Where Hazama uses his D button to launch chains allowing him to propel himself across the screen or keep enemies at a distance, Terumi uses his to drain his opponent's super meter. Hazama has to play defensively, using his mobility to press any small advantages he can take, where Terumi is relentlessly aggressive, using his draining to fuel near-constant use of super attacks.

The game looks great, with high resolution sprites and a high framerate, and much of the writing is also pretty funny. Obviously if you don't play fighting games, this won't be your thing, but I do, so it is. :lol

9 - Shadow of the Colossus
PS2/PS3 – Team ICO – 2006/2011

Oh god, everyone has played Shadow of the Colossus, right? If you haven't, stop now. Go play it. Go. No questions, just do it. Done? Great.

So what an extraordinary game, right? Describing it, or even watching someone else play it, cannot compare to playing it yourself. That feeling when your hand actually gets tired from clinging to a Colossus for so long, that epic music that plays as you fight, the beautiful, enormous, diverse landscape, the subtle but extremely effective story. Anyone who's played this game knows what I'm talking about.

My favorite experience in this game comes from fighting the flying worm Colossus. Early on in the fight, I lost my horse. If you recall this fight, you will recall that your horse is pretty much essential. However, I was resolved. I would not give up this fight. I fought for so long, I memorized the pattern that the Colossus flew around in, and eventually was able to position myself ahead of time so I could intercept him and hit him with arrows, or climb on him when he starts to fly low. I think it must have taken at least an hour, but I finally won. To my vast relief, my horse returned after the boss.

8 - Fate/Stay Night
PC/PS2 – Type-Moon - 2004

Another Visual Novel. Another Eroge, though another one where it works just fine (better, even!) without the porn. In fact, this game was re-released on PS2 with all the porn removed (obviously), and it was so popular people made patches for the PC version to turn it into the PS2 version.

This is really a classic Visual Novel. If you've ever played one (besides Ace Attorney), this is probably it. Fate is an extremely popular franchise, with numerous spinoffs, both a prequel (the previously mentioned Fate/Zero) and a sequel, a number of anime…

A probably incomplete of Fate media:

Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, Fate/Unlimted Codes, Fate/Tiger Colissuem, Fate/Extra, Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, Fate/Zero, Fate/Apocrypha, two anime adaptations, a movie adaptation, countless fan works… Let's just say it's one of the most popular things you've never heard of.

As a Visual Novel, of course the writing is the main draw, and writer Kinoko Nasu really shines in this game. From awesome action scenes, to touching romantic scenes, to funny scenes, to funny scenes which were supposed to be erotic, to highly disturbing scenes, to highly disturbing scenes which were supposed to be erotic… Really just great all around. Dude's not great at the erotic scenes though, which is why the game really benefits by having them cut out, and again there's the whole "WHY NOW?!" thing, as characters insist upon having sex even though the world is ending around them.

The story is divided into three routes, but unlike most games like this, you are forced to play them in a certain order. Each route has a different romantic interest, storyline, and villain. First is the Fate route, with Saber as the romantic interest and mostly about laying the groundwork of the world. The second route is Unlimited Blade Works, with Rin as the romantic interest and a focus on character development. Then comes the divisive part: Heaven's Feel. Heaven's Feel is my favorite part of the game. Some (so-called) fans don't like Heaven's Feel, maybe because it's when all of the really dark, fucked up, disturbing revelations are made, or maybe because of the romantic interest, Sakura. She's sort of a clingy psycho, but she's not the good part of the route… or rather, she is, because she's also (spoilers) the villain (spoilers). Much to my dismay, Heaven's Feel has never been adapted, preventing me from showing it to my friends who won't play Visual Novels. A new Fate/Stay Night anime was announced to come out this year being made by UFOTable (who did the Fate/Zero anime), and I had hoped it might be an adaptation of Heaven's Feel, but instead it is an 'original story based on the original game'… *sigh*

Anyway, the reason for this forced order is that the main character goes through development over the course of the three routes. This is part of the reason the original anime adaptation is so disappointing, as it only covers the Fate route, wherein Shirou is mostly a useless misogynistic idiot, causing many anime fans to look at me funny when I cite him as my favorite character.

The game's also got some great music, "The Golden King" and "Emiya" particularly. Emiya is the theme that plays whenever the main character is about to do something badass, and The Golden King is the theme for my favorite of the three villains.

If you're going to try out a Visual Novel, try out this one. Make sure you get the Realta Nua patch, which adds additional content from the PS2 version (voice acting, more pictures, extra scenes) as well as the option to remove the erotic scenes.

7 - Civilization V
PC - Firaxis - 2010

One-thousand, six-hundred and twenty-two hours. That's about sixty-seven and a half days. That's how many hours I have logged on Steam playing Civilization V. I don't think that counts playing in Offline Mode (which I do a lot), but a pretty big portion of the tracked playtime (near half) was done by my brother, so it probably evens out.

Anyone who's played Civilization knows why this is. Any fan of the series can recall deciding to play Civ at ten o'clock one weekend morning, to find that it is now eight PM by the time they have finished their session. If I could somehow get paid to play Civ by the hour, I'd be rich.

Describing what's so great about Civilization is sorta difficult. It's essentially the best board game ever made, so complex you need a computer to play it. The gameplay is easy to pick up but extremely complex to master. I've put so many hours into this game, and I'm still not really confident playing on difficulties higher than Normal.

If you play well, the game rewards you. Playing well means different things depending on the Civilization you play as, and how you intend to win the game. For most civilizations seeking to win a scientific or cultural victory, it's generally a good idea not to be aggressive in warfare. However, playing as Assyria, you can learn free technologies you haven't learned that other players have when you capture their cities, making war against technologically superior civilizations a viable strategy. As the Aztecs, you can gain culture by killing enemies, so an aggressive Aztec player can generate enormous amounts of culture (of course, as of the most recent expansion this is no longer sufficient to win a cultural victory, but aggressive play would still allow them to purchase a great number of policies conducive to great person generation).

There are two main ways I like to play. The first is a cultural victory. This involves creating great works of art, which produce tourism for your country. Tourism allows your culture to overtake the culture of other Civilizations, until eventually they are all "Wearing your blue jeans and listening to your pop music." I love playing this way, because the concept of a small, peaceful (but armed to the teeth) nation of artists and philosophers conquering the world with poems and music is excellent. I also like to play for diplomatic victory, which in practice is more like an economic victory. You achieve this by being voted World Leader at the United Nations, which is mostly accomplished by allying with as many City-States as possible, allowing you extra votes (because it's VERY difficult to get other Civs to vote for anyone but themselves, because why would they vote for another player to win the game?). The easiest and most reliable way to keep City-States as your allies is by pouring huge amounts of gold on them, so having a powerful economy is pretty essential. As an added benefit, much like in the real world having the biggest economy in Civ means you can also having the biggest military, and no one wants to piss you off too badly if you control not only enough votes in the UN to keep you Embargoed for eternity, but also so much money that if you stopped trading with them it would cripple their economies.

Either way I play, I tend to take a similar stance on warfare: do NOT fuck with me. If you declare war on me, that war will not be over until you're out of the game. I will take every city you have, exterminate your religion and replace it with my own, steal your artwork and put it in my museums, and turn your cities into money farms.

Of course, none of these are the only (or best) way to play. From a diplomatic perspective, my vengeful wrath isn't very wise. Civilizations don't like it when you wipe other players off the map. Burning their whole country and a few cities is a smarter way to get a civ off your back for pretty much the rest of the game, the diplomatic consequences are much less.

I'm semi-apprehensive about the new Civilization: After Earth set to come out this fall. It could be great, or it could suck. One thing I like about Civ is it introduces me to some ancient civilizations and leader I had never heard of, and I really enjoy the historical element. I love that a really good player could have the Zulus discover Flight in the year 1570, or to mirror reality by having a centuries-long feud between England and France. One thing I love to do is play one of the maps based on a real place and fill it with Civilizations who belong in that area. The Mediterranean is a great one, you get Rome, Greece, Spain, France, Carthage, Byzantines, Ottomans, Arabia, Portugal, Egypt, Venice, Morocco, and you can stretch it a bit with countries like Babylon or Assyria. I hope we get a Civilization VI in the next few years, because After Earth won't replace classic Civ for me. (And this is the last game made outside of Japan)

6 - Ace Attorney 3
DS - Capcom - 2007

Hey, another Visual Novel! And this one some of you have heard of! The Ace Attorney series is definitely the most mainstream Visual Novel released in the west, and it's really great. Obviously the gameplay is a bit more in-depth than most visual novels, since you need to gather evidence and cross-examine witnesses, but at its core the Ace Attorney series is comprised of Visual Novels.

As with most games in the genre, the focus of these games is really the story, and my favorite story in the series comes from Ace Attorney 3. For one, every case is good. Every other game has at least one sub-par case, but I enjoy all five in AA3. Part of the greatness of this one is that the most of the cases form a continuous story, which I feel is the best one told in the series so far. Though Edgeworth is my favorite Prosecutor, Godot is a close second, and his storyline is outstanding. Of course, as an Edgeworth fan, one of my favorite parts of the game is when you get to play as Edgeworth in the beginning of the fifth case.

The villain of the game's main story is probably my favorite. Though the villain of the fifth game has a higher 'lives ended and/or ruined' count, he was a professional. This game's villain is mostly motivated by greed and vengeance, and overall a much better character.

Composer Noriyuki Iwadare makes his second appearance on this list, in the first of many games he composed for in the series. The soundtrack is outstanding here, and my favorite in the series. Godot's theme, Dahlia's Theme, this game's iteration of the Cornered theme, all excellent.

Of course, if you want to try this game out, you really have to play through the previous two first in order to understand things, but the whole series is pretty excellent. If you have an iOS device, a version of the first three games is available (or maybe just the first one?), but they are all also available for digital purchase on Wii (and I assume Wii-U), much easier than trying to find an elusive physical copy.

Shadow!  :metal One my absolute favorites. It'd make you feel so small and weak and then so powerful in one foul swoop.

Other than that, this'll be the first few entries I can't relate to. The Civ games have always looked fun but I just can't get into those simulation/strategy type games; almost the same situation for Phoenix. I love the premise of both games, especially Phoenix, but once I play them I just get bored quickly. Great write ups still, I might have to try the Civ games one day when I eventually (hundreds of years from now) go through all my games.

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

5 – Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
PS2 – Atlus - 2007

Persona 3 was the first Shin Megami Tensei game I ever played. To explain the experience is difficult. Here was a game, a JRPG, unlike any I had ever played before. It's set in modern Japan, the characters have to go to high school, and all the music has lyrics. How strange.

The combat system used in Persona 3 (and 4) is second only to the glorious press turn system. Much like the press turn system, combat in this game is either highly rewarding or highly punishing. Usually punishing. One of the few  problems with this game is that you can't directly control the actions of your party members, leading to some highly frustrating moments, for example: During the final boss, you're really counting on your healer (I usually use Yukari) to be casting Mediarahan every turn. However, the AI makes it so that they will not cast it if their MP gets too low, resulting in them opting to use healing items when they still have enough MP to cast. This is highly frustrating, as you have plenty of MP-restoring items prepared for when they run out, but they don't know that. If you could control them, you could choose actions based on knowledge of how the rest of the party will act! What a novel concept! Happily, this is amended in the PSP version.

However, the RPG system is only one part of the game. The unique aspect of Persona 3 (and 4) is the incorporation of gameplay elements from dating sims. There are a number of characters who you can choose to spend time with while you're not dungeoning, and spending time with them causes their relationship with them improve. It's quite a challenge to balance all of the relationships, raising your 'Social Stats' (courage, charm, and academics), and actually completing the RPG portion of the game. Each character has a Tarot arcana assigned to them. I'll explain the point of all this in a moment.

Personas are the other major aspect of the gameplay. Your abilities and stats in combat are derived from your Persona. You get new Personas two ways: you can get them after battles as a reward, or you can fuse them together in the Velvet Room. Each Persona is also assigned an arcana, and the Persona created is based on the arcanas of the two going into it, as well as their initial level. When fusing a Persona, it gains extra experience based on the level of the Social Link with the character assigned to that arcana, and completing a Social Link unlocks that arcana's ultimate Persona.

Music? Yeah. Shoji Meguro really shines here. I could make a little list of which songs to check out, but honestly it would be shorter to list some ones that aren't that great. But a highlight reel: Mass Destruction, Danger Zone, and of course Battle Hymn of the Soul/Battle for Everyone's Souls. The music is really extraordinary and unique, pretty much the only other games that have music like it are…other Persona games. So yeah.

Play this game. Probably the PSP version.

No one cared about Persona 3?  :sadpanda:

4 - Earthbound
SNES – Nintendo – 1995

I played Earthbound before it was cool. I played Super Smash Bros. because Ness was in it, not the other way around. Earthbound is fucking awesome.

This game is definitely a cult classic. It's so odd, so very, very odd, that I have never convinced any friend of mine to play it to the end. But I love odd, and this game is full of it. The enemies are odd, the dialog is odd, the music is odd… just a really odd game.

This game is definitely a love it or hate it kind of thing. If you enjoy weird games (especially weird Japanese games), then I can't recommend it enough. The combat is even quite challenging, and the scripted final boss fight is outstanding.

I don't know what else to say about this game. It's awesome.

PS2 – Atlus - 2008

So hey, remember everything I said about Persona 3? That, but better. Honestly, this game just takes everything Persona 3 did and says, "Yeah, I can do that better."

The story is one place where it really stands out compared to the first game. So many twists and false endings, I'm sure many people thought they had finished the game when they beat the second last dungeon, and thought "Well I guess there were a few plotholes". NO. The game lets you stop here (earlier, too, but it's more obvious that it's wrong at that point), but the game has been constantly telling you to seek the truth. The battle theme is called 'Reach Out to the Truth', for fuck's sake. If there's something that appears to be a plothole, don't be satisfied with that after the game railed on about Truth. Go find the truth.

The combat system is improved, because now you can control your party members, and they've added a guard option. That's pretty much it.

The music is outstanding again, themes like I'll Face Myself (battle), Kiri, and The Genesis are absolute gems.

As I said, this game is pretty much just a better Persona 3. If you're going to try out Persona for the first time, start here.

And only Persona I've played is Innocent Sin (the first part of 2). I love it.

I've watched Persona 3 be played, but I've played 4 myself and I do think it is indeed superior in many ways, so yes, no complaints here.

I should probably ask to be on the waiting list, I'll probably be able to compile a list by the time it'd be my turn :P

I remember this game causing some controversy back when people were making little unofficial lists right before this thread started:

2 - Chrono Trigger
SNES – Squaresoft - 1995

THE
GREATEST
JRPG
OF
ALL
TIME

What an astounding masterpiece. Everything in this game is perfect (well,it could be a little more difficult, but that's it). The art style is great, the combat system is exciting, the story is engaging, the music is extraordinary.

Talking about what makes Chrono Trigger great is difficult, but to this day it remains my favorite JRPG. There have been a lot of extraordinary JRPGs on the list, but this one tops them all, despite its relative simplicity. This is the pinnacle of JRPGs, and if you're a fan of the genre you've pretty much gotta love this game. It's great.

Fuck yeah Chrono Trigger. One of like four games I've played on this list and like one of ten that I've even heard of.  :lol

It totally deserves all the acclaim it gets, IMO. A masterpiece that transcends both WRPG's and JRPG's and is just a straight up awesome game.

All of that. Simply one of the greatest games ever made. Everything about it is just gorgeous.

My prediction for #1: Madden '95 SNES

Madden '96 > '95

I should go play Chrono Trigger now and finish it.

Madden '97 on PS was really where it was at. That game rattled my genitalia with its awesome graphics and gameplay.

I played CT through, and I didn't understand what made it one of the best. On the other hand, I loved Chrono Cross.

What am I missing that makes CT so great?

I've played both games and I feel like Chrono Cross just falls short of living up to its predecessor. The music isn't quite as memorable,  the battle system doesn't feel as good, boss fights feel less rewarding when you when, and the story is sort of a clusterfuck that they probably needed another disk to explain properly.
