Not to worry chaps... my Top 10 only has one C64 game - everything else is either pretty modern, or a complete classic everyone knows.

Well, at least your list will finally contain games that I've heard of, and maybe even played.  :)

Seems like I'm again the only one to know this game.  ;D

Played it a lot back then and it was really fun but also really frustrating because I was never able to beat it. I think four factories destroyed was the most I achieved.

Guess this is the Jingle-Kwiji list then.

The sixth factory was always a bitch, because by then, the battleship was being built at an incredibly fast pace, the last factory itself was always hard to find, and the collective defenses by the Bungeling Empire were pretty strong.  Once that battleship sunk your aircraft carrier (the only place to get repaired), it was only a matter of time.

Anyone on here ever play 'Manhunt'? I'm asking because there's a piece on that game on Den of geek. I tried to order that game from europe back then and never was able to due to 'Too violent' bans and sh...stuff.

It's basically like Civilization, but in outer space and yeah, slightly more complicated.  It actually looks a lot more complicated than it is.  A few plays through and man is it super-addicting.  I'll still sometimes bring it up and play for hours.

Master Of Orion was a great game, I always went for total domination and total annihilation  :metal

I never had a specific strategy, aside from staying ahead of everyone via tech and building fucktons of ships with all the latest upgrades.  Then I'd always reserve oneship spot for what I called a missile boat.  A medium to small ship with fast maneuverability, with all four weapon slots loaded with as many of the best missiles I could give it.  Since they'd be smaller ships, you could build a ton of them pretty quickly.  You stack several hundred of them and you can destroy bigger enemy ships fast.  Of course, once their missiles are used up, they're worthless until the next encounter, so I'd often put a beam weapon in one of the four spots instead.

I lost the election and everyone declared total war on me, if I had the edge on ships and tech, I'd just march around the galaxy bombing the living shit out of every planet I could.  Sooner or later, they'd run out of places to retreat to and as my advancing fleet continued to grow, they didn't stand a chance.

10. NHL 93 & 94 / Sega Genesis

As good Canadian citizens, if we weren’t playing Madden NFL, it was more likely that the dorm room was playing NHL.  These two games were the 2nd and 3rd iterations of the franchise from EA Sports (“It’s in the game!”).  The ’94 version was ground breaking in that it was the first game endorsed by both the NHL and the NHLPA.  These were the years where body-check’s resulted in blood being spilled (below) and players being knocked out for the game, instant replays, one-timers, slap shots, breaking the glass, player rankings, line changes – all stuff taken for granted now, but in the early 90s, it was “whoa!”.  The only horrible thing done was that fighting was removed in ’94.

I can't begin to imagine the number of hours spent playing this when we should've been doing schoolwork.  It's amazing I made it out of 1st year University.

I played a shit ton of NHL games starting on Sega Mega Drive with, I think, the '94 reincarnation, later on pc. I think I played every new NHL game during the 90s and the beginning of the 00s. I played alone through several seasons and tournaments with friends, sometimes the whole weekend long. I got blisters on my thumbs and I think at that time I knew more about canadian hockey players than about my favorite football (that's the one with the round ball) players  ;D

Classic games for sure.

Trent: I wish they still had fights in this game so I could bitch-slap Wayne.
Mike: What? They don't have fighting anymore?
Trent: Doesn't that suck?
Mike: Why'd they get rid of the fighting? It was the best part of the old version.
Sue: I think kids were hittin' each other or somethin', man.
Trent: Yeah but you know what, Mike? You can make their heads bleed in this one.
Mike: Make somebody's head bleed.
Sue: No man, we're in the playoffs.
Trent: I'm gonna make Wayne Gretzky's head bleed for super-fan #99 over here.

9 Dishonored / PS3

I think I’ve mentioned it, but I’m not an online gamer.  I hate multi-player, because I suck at it.  As you can all tell, I grew up playing either one-on-one, or against a computer… not against a thousand real people who have way more time to game than me, where I spend more time re-spawning than actually playing a game.  So, I look for a game with a unique, innovative, creative and compelling story.  And holy mother-of-god is this one got the creative aspect nailed – out of the park.

It’s a steam-punk style, 1st person adventure where you are an assassin sent to accomplish various missions, but you don’t have to actually kill anyone if you don't want to.  Every choice you make and action you take has repercussions – either instantaneous, or later in the game.  You can use stealth and/or combat.  I of course, chose combat most of the time.  Really should go back and try to do it stealth mode – but fuck it was hard in the situations where I did.

Set in a fictional, plage-ridden city of Dunwal (inspired by 18th century London/Edinburgh), you start as a royal bodyguard, framed for the assassination of your Empress, and spend the rest of the game seeking revenge.  You gradually gain magical abilities, most notably “Blink” and “Dark Vision” (short distance teleportation and a sense to see enemies/danger through walls).  I was engrossed with the complexity of how and when to use your powers, implications and consequences, balancing stealth vs combat, main vs side quests… all intricately and delicately woven together into a brilliantly captivating storyline.  I will say this… the final boss battle was anti-climactic.  I don’t know if I got very lucky, or happened to used an absolutely perfect combination of weaponry and magic, but it was over within a few seconds.

No matter, fantastic game, and I’m very much looking forward to the sequel later this year.

I would rank this game much higher...probably #1.

As we've discussed before, I'm a PC gamer, and for me, this is the perfect first person PC game. The precision of mouse and keyboard really makes a difference. I've probably played all the way through it at least eight times. By far, the hardest and most rewarding method was going for the Ghost (never detected) and Clean Hands achievements while still gathering all collectibles. I think it took me nearly a month to accomplish the feat and it never got boring or too frustrating (well mostly  :) ).

There are so many terrific ways to approach playing the game. Flesh and Steel, where the only power you're allowed is the first level of Blink (tough). High Chaos where you basically kill anything that moves.

I still enjoy firing up this baby once in a while and I'll go into the options and turn off all HUD cues, mission markers and cross hairs, and exact vengeance on the most hated, reprehensible villains of any video game to date. It plays just like a movie when you do.

I'm really bummed that the sequel has been pushed back to December. Although, in the end, that may be a great development.

How different/similar is that to Thief?  I just finished that game and man, did I get playing value for dollar from that one.  I played it all the way through I think six times to get all the trophies and complete all the challenges, and it never once felt stale.

I was really disappointed with Dishonored, all of the so called "innovative" mechanics I felt were already on other, better games, and the story isn't really deep or creative - just a classic revenge plot with power conspiracies behind. Decisions don't have much of an influence, because you can end up with basically the same ending despite them. And at ~6 hours, too short for my taste. Oh well  :P

It's quite a bit different than Thief, in that it's faster paced...or rather, it can be faster paced. They share some similarities, like picking pockets is way too easy but your character moves way more fluidly and with an upgrade in Agility more quickly. Also, the freedom to move vertically way better than thief due to blink.

Seeing as how much I loved Thief (and played the PC version back in the day), would I like this you think?

As for the list, I'd throw a hat in there to give my list.   I have fully EIGHT titles on my list that haven't even been mentioned in passing, let alone in an actual list.  I'm only at "20" though; if I need 25 I might have to scrounge a little...

Stadler. It's hard to say, really. I love the game but I may be biased.

Here's a YouTube walk-through by the best stealth player (IMO) in the community. I'd suggest you watch the first mission video to see if it's something you'd like. Be warned though, this guy is very good and makes difficult maneuvers seem easy.

First time I played through the main missions, second time tried to so the "secondary" missions, but they mostly involve just looking for some random treasure or escorting someone iirc.

8. Uncharted II / PS3

Modern day Indiana Jones, set to a video game.  That sums it up.  As a Playstation exclusive, those not on this platform have sorely missed out.  This was one of the reasons I chose Sony over Microsoft in the first place (along with Infamous, and the PS3 being BluRay vs HD-DVD).

Pretty sure this was the game that put Naughty Dog on the map – at least with respect to the PlayStation, as it was their first PS3 game.  This one really appealed to me because at the time, I still wasn’t too comfortable with 1st person games.  So the 3rd person aspect was right up my alley. I think Uncharted was my 2nd PS3 game, and it was incredible. What Uncharted 2 did to expand on the franchise wasn’t anything extraordinarily earth shattering, but it was just bigger and bad-asser ??  Cut scenes aren’t too cumbersome or drawn out, but propel the story along nicely and appropriately.

It’s a helluva opening scene – you start the game regaining consciousness on a train that hanging off the edge of a cliff, and you gotta move fast to survive.  Near the end, there is a level that involved fighting monsters that was tough as shit.  Man I hated that level.

The awards this one has received since its release are numerous, and it still remains for some as one of the best games of all time – and surely the best linear game ever.

No way man, their Crash Bandicoot games were legendary on the PS1. And their Jax & Daxter games on PS2 were pretty well received as well I think.

Anway, never played the Uncharted games but am definitely interested.

I'd like to play it, but, you know...Sony. PS exclusive. The PS4 is not backward compatible. I don't like to support developers who do exclusives anyway.

Sounds great otherwise.
