Metallica: Don't care.
Tool: I don't expect it to be out anytime soon, but when/if it finally does, I'll be picking it up day one.

I'll check out the new Tool when it rolls around, but if it takes another decade, or it never does, I'm cool with that.

And Metallica, maybe. I'm one of the few people who liked/loved St Anger and Lulu, so I'll sample it once it appears and see what I think.

Isn't there enough shitting on them both in their respective threads? :lol

Where's the option for "We need yet another thread to discuss these two derelict bands?"

Because I totally wouldn't pick that one, so just toss me in the meh category.

I'll check out both when they arrive but there are so many great bands out there that are producing great music that if they didn't release another piece of music it wouldn't bother me.

I find it fascinating that some people just can't let go, move on with other music, and when (note: IF) the time comes when any of the bands release something, enjoy the album then.

I'll check out the Metallica album but I probably won't care about the Tool album beyond a curiosity spin or two several months after its release.

I'll listen to the Metallica album when it comes out, but I don't really care about it and I expect it to be pretty mediocre anyway.
Don't care about Tool.

I like Tool but I'm not a huge fan, so I'm not like :caffeine: for a new album, although I'll check it out when it finally gets released. Metallica is a band whose best before date expired two decades ago - I have no interest in listening to 50-year-old millionaires' attempts at playing thrash metal, especially if the sound quality is as awful as on Death Magnetic.

In a recent interview - Hetfield said that they have no problems with the album taking *another* five years.

I'm also not giddy for new releases. As I said before and will again - it's not the waiting that's really the issue - it's the constant contradictions and misinformation that starts

to get boring after a while. And with Metallica - they've been saying " in the new year " as far back as 2010...

Neither Metallica or Tool owe you another album. To re-purpose Neil Gaiman's quote on George RR Martin and how slow he writes, Metallica and Tool aren't your bitches. Buying their work is not an obligation to you for the band to put out an album on your terms.

Even though I do like a couple songs from the 90s, I'm ok with thinking Metallica disbanded after The Black Album. That's their last good album anyway. As for Tool, I was never much of a fan to begin with aside from a few songs, so I really don't care either way. It will be amusing to see the reactions once they do finally come out with something new.

I think Metallica should have split after S&M in 1999.

The S&M thing would have been a good send off - kinda like a best of with a twist and none of the absolute shitstorm that would follow in later years.

I understand why that would get boring.  If I was reading all of Tool's interviews, I'm sure I would get tired of being teased and misled, too.  To combat this problem, I have devised a simple solution: I don't read all of Tool's interviews.  I know that if Tool ever do release a new album, it will create a big enough buzz that I will hear about it.  Comfortable in that knowledge, I don't have to read every word Maynard says looking for hints about how the next album is coming along.  And since I don't read all those interviews and hang on Maynard's every word, I manage to avoid all the tedious contradictions and misinformation.

I really don't understand why this is such an issue for people.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

My thoughts on this issue:

Metallica will probably release something. I probably won't care for it much, however.

Tool may never release anything, but if they do, I'll probably really enjoy it.

Metallica: Don't care, their last few albums have all been either boring/uninspired or terrible and nothing good since Load/Reload IMO
Tool: Not sitting around waiting for the next album but if it comes out then I will listen to it because 10k Days was still a good album

Not even out of curiosity? Prog forum after all and Tool is definitely one of the big players in the genre.

They take some getting into but Lateralus is a masterpiece.

Aenima slightly less so and 10,000 Days is like a watered down version of Aenima.

And Hardwired To Self Destruct was great.

I thought Hardwired was incredibly boring so not sure if I'll check out future Metallica releases.

Not a huge Tool fan but if it comes out I'll probably check it out.

My opinion :

Hardwired to Self Destruct > Death Magnetic. And also their best album since the 1991 self-titled.

Tool : if the next album ever does come out of course i'll listen to it but i'm not holding my breath, counting the days.

Hardwired was boring and uninspired, so I don't really care about that one. The Tool album is way overdue and can't possibly live up to whatever hype there is about that album. Again, I don't really care, because I think the band has overstayed its welcome by not doing anything worthwhile for so long. Why the press keeps following them and how they somehow manage to stay relevant without doing anything seriously baffles me. Whatever they will release will ultimately be disappointing, so I'm not holding my breath at all. Better bands are releasing stuff more frequently and that interests me far more than waiting for a thing that won't be as good.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.
