Most epic moment in a DT song?
« on: April 18, 2014, 05:31:00 PM »
And just ONE moment. Not a list of moments. Not a poll of presets that I get to choose. Just straight out say what you consider to be the most epic moment in a DT song and why.

For me, it probably is the outro section of In the Name of God, which begins after the final chorus ends. Man those lyrics. Those "whoas". That hymn. That melody. It just screams epic to me. Glory, glory, hallelujah!

So, what's yours?

The end of Count of Tuscany... the "whoas" with JR's string arps. Especially live, it just takes you somewhere else.

There are a few that come to mind, and I hate to name just one, but I'm going to follow your "no lists" rule and name just one.

The end of Intervals into the beginning of Razor's Edge. 20 minutes of music have been building to that one moment of release and, of course, the few minutes that follow.

This. Octavarium is the musical equivalent of the sexual response cycle, and the end of Intervals is the orgasm.

I'm going with Illumination Theory.  It's so blatantly trying to be super duper epic, but it works because it's earned and the execution is smart.  One of LaBrie's greatest moments.

Only one moment?

The ending of Breaking All Illusions, when the ending melody of Far From Heaven is reprised. It is so majestic.

Impossible to choose one, but the endings to The Count of Tuscany and Metropolis Part 1 are solid choices for a maximum level of epic grandeur.

Reminds me of my Freudian theories behind the structure of the classic piece Fantasia on the Dargason that I formulated one day when my mind was wandering in school on a day when I was up very late. We had played the piece in concert band last year without any sort of context whatsoever.

For me the "super duper epic" outro is too derivative of their earlier, and better epics, and kind of cliche at this point. It's actually the weak link in an otherwise great song for me.

I don't know what moment I would choose, but it is hard to look past DT's big endings, such as the Razor's Edge solo, Losing Time/Grand Finale, ITNOG outro with the battle hymn, TCOT's outro guitar solo, the list goes on and on. But those would probably be the top contenders.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Of Course Razor's Edge and TCOT from the acoustic on.  Pure magic.

Lots of great ones have been mentioned.

Just wanted to throw out one that probably wouldn't occur to many people.  In Eve, when it comes out of the bridge and goes into the final verse/chorus/whatever you want to call it, when JP takes over the melody that introduced by KM at the beginning.  That always lights my fire.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

My serious answer: I've always loved the melodic part of the Sacrificed Sons solo, where it transitions from epic wankery to emotional tribute.

There are a lot but if it comes to one it's Intervals from Octavarium, but the Score version. In my opninion it's much better than the studio version

I think i'll have to agree with you. That outro is still today as epic as when I heard it for the first time.

That's actually a huge moment, and not one that I think occurs to most people. I certainly didn't think of it until you said it.

Just to go against the grain of what's been posted. From Beneath the Surface... "and then one day I stopped caring..AND BEGAN TO FORGET WHY I LONGED TO BE SO CLOSE...."

So simple, yet so brilliantly effective. Manly tears, every fucking time.

Although I don't consider it the most epic moment, it certainly is a great one and well executed. Also, I have to agree with those who say the ending of LTL.

Can't choose whether it's the moment when Intervals end and the entrance into Razor's Edge occurs, the beautiful rag time solo of Dance of Eternity or the 4:45 mark of Trial of Tears when James keeps the sustain and JP enters(especially the live ones get me, I feel like flying hah!)

Any help people? :D

When DT plays Carpe Diem live, slowly. Holy fuck JP playing that intro gives me chills on these boots.
