Least favorite Track 7 of the Rudess era
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:13:17 AM »
Going the other way with this one, since In the Name of God would obviously win favorite track 7 in a blowout, so I thought this would be more interesting.

For me, this is easy: Sacrificed Sons.  It has its moments, but by and large is a fairly uninteresting song; probably a bottom 10-15 DT song in my book.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

That's a good group of songs.  I'd say Far From Heaven is my least favorite just because the other tracks are so strong.

Sacrificed Sons is in my Top 10, suprised by amount of hate it gets in this thread. I think it's glorious.

Voted for Through Her Eyes there, the only song from SFAM I don't like at all.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

:lol  What a mess I've made of that one. Voted before reading, got confused by the results - then got it into my head that ITNOG must have been added to the poll later on, then even after reading the first post I still didn't get it

So my vote should actually have been for Far From Heaven, but the poll won't let me change the vote.

Sacrificed Sons

I feared that TMOLS would get the majority of the votes on here, but thank God it's doing well. Such an underrated song.

Been a diehard DT fan for almost three years now, but I never actually got through Sacrificed Sons yet. The intro sample is annoying, and it doesn't improve much after that either, so I always skip it after a couple of minutes.

Come to think of it, there are quite a few DT songs I'm yet to listen to in their entirety (2 from Awake; 3 from 8vm; 2 from SC -I once started listening to Repentance during a 12 hour long train ride thinking it'll help me get through it, it didn't- ; 2 from BCSL and 2 from ADTOE).

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.

Sacrificed Sons. Just heard it to check if my vote was going to be right because I haven't heard some tracks off Octavarium in quite a while and, well, it just doesn't stand as strong as the other tracks in the list. It feels quite disjointed, and even though the separate parts sound great, it doesn't work as a whole. It is perhaps too long, I think they should've kept the part with the orchestra shorter for the album and have released a long version (the one that appears on the album) on Score, where they could get to play it with the orchestra live.

Sacrificed Sons is good but it's the least interesting one.

The best one would be Surrender To Reason, it's easily Top 5 song for me I love it so so so so much, every second is filled with awesomeness. It has so much variety yet it's very cohesive and it's length is perfect.

On the Backs of Angels. (It counts as BC&SL's track 7)

I don't really dislike any of these, although quite a few are just meh. Voted for Far From Heaven because it's just sort of there. It doesn't stand out at all.

Ministry of Lost Souls is the worst song they've ever done. Including any Majesty demos and other. I hate that song.

How is Far From Heaven in second place right now?  Good lyrics, touching melodies, nice call-forwards to Breaking All Illusions, and JR playing piano.  It's a touching little piece of music.

The Ministry of Lost Souls, without question.

The could take out 10 minutes of that song and it would have been one of their best, instead they made it 10 minutes too long and created their worst song.

I think it's the only song from DT I don't care for.

You're missing out!  All the best bits come at the middle and end of the song (4:45ish but my fav part starts at 7:50) .  Bitchin heavy part and drum solo/outro always get me rocking out.
