Best DT Album Opener
« on: April 12, 2014, 09:44:13 AM »
Inspired by the "Favorite track x of the Rudess era" threads going around, I thought I'd make a poll for DT's best album opener ever. I was going to do concert opener instead, but they didn't have staple openers every tour, so they've used a lot of songs to open concerts.

Mine is 100% The Glass Prison. Heaviest opener they've done. Starts the album with a magnificent punch to the face.

I'll also put in my vote for TGP, although most of their album openers are great.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I'm going with A Fortune In Lies. That opening drum bit just gets you ready and is an awesome track!
i don't even like dt but i had keyboard and an ipad so what the fuck
Jordan is actually DT's tax advisor. He just happens to do their taxes on stage, that's why he has that iPad there.

In The Presence of Enemies, easily. I mean, just those first few seconds are enough to just get you pumped up and excited for the album!  :metal :metal :metal

1. In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1
2. The Glass Prison
3. On the Backs of Angels
4. A Nightmare to Remember
5. Pull Me Under
6. The Root of All Evil
7. As I Am
8. False Awakening Suite
9. A Fortune In Lies
10. 6:00
11. New Millennium
12. Regression

That seems about right. They certainly know how to open an album! The top 7 there are all among my top 25-30 DT tracks.

While it's not the best song per se, when you consider that it sets the tone for the rest of the album, probably moreso than any other track 1 in their history, you really could argue that Regression is their best opener (as opposed to just picking the best song that just happens to be track 1).

In the Presence of Enemies pt 1. A fantastic song, even better than the full twenty-five minute version. False Awakening Suite almost got the nod, but ItPoE1 is one of their best songs of the 21st Century.

Of the others - The Root of All Evil is stunning, too. A riff factory, but still melodic, and catchy, and the best installment in the Twelve Step Suite. I think A Fortune in Lies is probably the best opener of the Moore era. PMU's fairly mid-range, 6:00's more striking but it's neither a masterpiece nor a stinker. As an opener, it doesn't quite match up to the pomp of A Fortune in Lies. They nailed that one.

The Glass Prison's good but as we've established, I prefer The Root of All Evil. As I Am's good, but not amazing. A Nightmare to Remember's decent, but bloated, OtBoA is good, but not amazing... New Millennium's fun! Silence, the press of a button, then BLEE-BOO-BEE-BA-BOO-BEE-BLEE-BOO-BEE-BA-BEE-BLEE-BA-BLEEBOO. Still. Deffo ItPoE.

Went with TGP but Nightmare and Enemies come really close, followed by 6:00 and As I Am.

Worse to me is probably PMU followed by NM
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

The Root of All Evil, mainly for sentimental reasons, as the opener of the first DT album I bought. I could've just as easily picked PMU, 6:00 or OTBOA.

Lol, when I was looking at the poll results, my brain accidentally fused "The Glass Prison" with part of "As I Am" so what I saw was, "The Glam Prison".

I found choosing only one to be far too difficult. I want to consider not only how good the song is by itself but how well it introduces the album. In this regard, my favorite three would be The Root of All Evil, In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1, and The Glass Prison, between which I can't just really can't decide which I like best as album openers.

ITPOE pt. 1, with Regression at the second place. If ITPOE wouldn't happen to be my favourite song, I'd given it to Regression. An incredibly climactic opening to a concept album.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Voted for New Millennium, and fully expect to be in the minority.

Glass Prison and Nightmare run it close though.

Went with 6:00, but The Root of All Evil, Pull Me Under, New Millennium and In the Presence of Enemies would've been good choices as well. Surprised to see The Glass Prison winning by such a majority.

False Awakening Suite almost got the nod

Just to clarify, I assume you're interpreting the poll as "Song that best introduces/begins the album" rather than "Best song of the list that happens to be an album opener" right? If it's the latter then this is the best contender for the Controversial Opinion thread  :lol

Yes indeed, plenty of better songs in that list, TROAE and 6:00 among them - although False Awakening Suite is bloody brilliant in its own right, as a two-minute instrumental. Way more than just an intro.

It was hard to decide between Glass Prison and 6:00, but I gave my vote to 6:00, probably because of the attatchment I have towards it as one of the first DT songs I heard.

My vote goes to The Glass Prison

Runners up: The Root of All Evil and In The Presense of Enemies Pt. 1

The interesting thing about those picks is the fact that Octavarium and Systematic Chaos are my 2 least favorite Dream Theater albums.

Went with that too… excellent song to kick off my favorite DT album.
