Insomnium
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:07:26 PM »
For those who don't know, Insomnium are a progressive/melodic death metal band from Finland. They have their 6th album "Shadows of the Dying Sun" coming out at the end of this month.

the first single off the new album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdB-8JlMgN8

Personally, my favorite Insomnium albums are the first two, but I like all of them a whole lot. Can't wait to hear the new one. :metal

Found out about them a couple of weeks ago by listening to the song Ephemeral which I liked and am going to check out their discography after I'm done with my roulette.

Bandwidth issues are preventing me from watching YouTube clips right now, but I really dig this band and they're one of my favorite melodeath bands along with Be'lakor and Dominia. My favorite album of theirs is Above the Weeping World and for me they haven't been able to top it since, but I'm always hopeful with every new release!  ;D

Watched this by accident as I'm no fan of death vocals but bloody hell that's a good song. Wolfking will be impressed that I gave it the time of day, what with me liking the Persephone album too. Not saying I'm coming round to the growls but I'm impressed with  this track. Not sure that I could cope with a whole album, bbut credit where its due.

^ To sum it up, Winter's Gate will be a 40 minute album consisting of one song based on an award-winning short story of the same name, written by Niilo Sevänen. The story will also be released as a book in three languages (Finnish, English, German).

I have discovered Insomnium over the last month and they are fast becoming one of my greatest discoveries.  Absolutely brilliant.  I have already purchased the last two albums and then the Candlelight Box Set with the first four albums.  Just an amazing melodic death metal band, so underrated.

Thanks to wolfking, I just started listening to them. I'm loving what I'm hearing so far. I feel like I hear some old Amorphis influence, among other things.

:metal  I definitely hear a bit of Amorphis influence too.  Really underrated stuff.

Yeah, I stumbled across a couple of their vids while I was listening to Omnium Gatherum on youtube and really got hooked.

I'm working my way backwards and so far have gotten really familiar with the last two, Shadows of a Dying Sun and One For Sorrow.  One For Sorrow is my fav from the two, Through the Shadows is one of the greatest songs I've heard in a while.

I just started listening to Across the Dark today and it could be better again.

I'm going to add their albums to my Spotify playlist.

So, do we like them so much right now that we're discussing them in three different threads?  :lol

Above the Weeping World is my favourite, possibly the biggest reason why I became a fan of the genre. Fantastic album! They don't really have a bad record, but I'm not the biggest fan of OFS and the debut. Shadows of the Dying Sun was excellent again though.

I'm probably going to see them with Swallow the Sun and Pressure Points in October!

I'm working my way backwards so I'll probably listen to Weeping World tomorrow then, looking forward to it.  Can't stop listening to Across the Dark though.  Weighed Down with Sorrow is one of the most brutal, powerful, epic and amazing songs I've ever heard.  Holy shit!

Yeah. Anyone who is into extreme forms of metal around here should check out Winter's Gate. It's getting considerable acclaim right now.

Far and beyond the best they've ever made. Just a classic, top to bottom. The third section (by the divisions on the streaming version) escapes words entirely.

Winter's Gate is incredible.  Takes a few listens to digest, but it's already my favorite thing they've put out.  Certainly one of the very best albums of the year.

Yeah, it's cool indeed, but I'm not getting the masterpiece status either just yet.  I'm finding it quite hard to get into if I'm going to be perfectly honest.  I think it's something you have to be in the mood for.

I think it's something you have to be in the mood for.

Doesn't apply to me by any means ;) On a couple of occasions it's the darkest and most brutal music they have ever released so that can play a part, on top of the obvious fact it's a 40 minute song. It has a few dynamically recurring themes and I knew to expect that kind of stuff, but it may not be as obvious to some other listeners. I certainly wouldn't consider it something to play in the car on initial listening, and it may be a "wintry" album for some.

Okay, my opinion is changing.  I'm finding myself wanting to listen to this more and more and it's growing into a fucking monster.  It could in fact be masterpiece status.  I only picked up the single cd version, but I'm liking it so much I might lash out and pick up the nice big book edition with the audio story cd.

Above the Weeping World. I even know a few people who aren't really into melodeath but still think it's fantastic.
