Orange Is the New Black
« on: March 02, 2014, 11:06:23 PM »
I was surprised to see that there was no thread on this original Netflix show.

Anyway, I just finished Season 1 today - yay for being stuck inside because of ice and snow! - and I really liked it a lot.  The writing is a bit out there at times, but overall I thought it was really good.  I'll definitely be watching Season 2 when it comes out this spring or summer.

Been hearing good things about it, it's on my list. I'll probably go to it after I'm done with my Dr. Who run.

It was pretty entertaining. The latter half and especially last couple episodes are great. I hope they expand on her 'corruption'. It'd be cool if it turned into a Breaking Bad kind of transformation.

Weird. I just finished Breaking Bad, and it suggested this show. IMDB'd it, then opened up the forum to find this thread at the top.

Great show.
The stuff outside the prison is really the only downside I see. I guess it's there for plot/character reference but the even the acting "outside the prison" is pretty bad. Compared to the acting inside. The lead character needs to learn some different emotives. She's at a risk of becoming Katie Holmes-shoulder shrugging-one way of delievering lines-type actress.

If you enjoyed the sillyness of Spartacus, with the blood, sex and quick plots you might like Black Sails

it follows John Silver (before he became Long John Silver) and Captain Flint's boat. Not quite full of boobies as Spartacus, but still has some and has a more playful feel to it than that constant death that Spartacus had. Another Starz Original.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

It's hard for anything to not be a letdown after the awesomeness of Breaking Bad, so if you watch Orange..., just go in knowing that.  Or maybe wait a bit of time for the newness of BB to wear off you a bit (like I did).

Great show.

I think they could have gotten a much better actor than Jason Biggs to play the fiancé - he'll always be both Jim the dork from American Pie and Silverman the aloof idiot from Saving Silverman to me, I guess - but his role is fairy limited, so I am okay with it.  But I think Taylor Schilling does a very good job in the lead role.   Kate Mulgrew (whom I didn't recognize until several episodes in) also does a great job as Red.

This has been my favorite Netflix original show so far. It really picks up after the first two episodes, the first episode in particular, is pretty much a giant nonentity, but afterwards it really picks up. All the characters are great, even Jason Biggs as the douchiest fiance ever is kinda interesting even if he is the worst amongst the whole bunch.

Great show and I can't wait for the next season.

The last 3 episodes of Season 1 are among the best TV I have seen in years. What a remarkable series. And can we talk about how strong the ensemble is? I've barely heard of any of these actors before and they all kill it.

I got about halfway through season one, and then ran into a problem that I often do with tv shows. Piper just became stupid. At first she was making simple and honest mistakes (insulting Red, forgetting the screwdriver) and you were interested in her. Then it kind of morphed into a pretty serious naivete, which I find less tolerable. Then she just started acting like dumb, spoiled brat and I'm about ready to see her shanked. I'll certainly get back into it, but the last episode I watched really put me off of it for a while.

Interestingly, the same thing happened with CYE and the roadside memorial episode. Great show, but once Larry started acting like a stupid jackass instead of an eccentric with terrible coping skills it made me start to hate him.

edit: and while I'm at it, a real deficiency in nekkid Hot Donna girl on girl action.

I like the show a lot. Just binged both seasons, but I need to re watch season 2 because I passively watched the middle of it. Because this, minus S2:1 and S2:13, I feel season 1 is stronger. But not my final opinion.

My only gripe is the hyper-sexuality of the show. I know it's a dark comedy, and a few if the encounters are humorous. but I thought there would be some under-current of reality due it being based on a memoir.

I think that's mostly the point. Piper is just arrogant, narcissistic, and just utterly clueless when it comes to things that exist outside of her life as an upper class, white yuppie. She's a prime example of book smart, street stupid. I really question how much we're supposed to like her or even sympathize with her at times because, even though she's surrounded by people that have done much worse things, she's still infuriating.

And Larry is a total dbag in Season 1.

You guys have missed the entire concept and point of Curb if Larry being a moron pisses you off. For real... get on his level, bro. It's (idiotic) genius. If he wasn't a complete and total curmudgeon, the show wouldn't work.

On topic...I enjoyed S2, I think I'm done with it though. It's become kind of monotonous for me, and the whole concept of 'good girl gone bad' didn't really play itself out the way I'd like. Not to mention I absolutely hated the main antagonist this season, though the ending was quite fulfilling, it all but saved the finale for me. It was fun while it lasted, but I can't see giving half a shit about S3 unless a complete paradigm shift occurs. Good stuff, fun while it lasted; nothing more, nothing less. Jenji is apparently a one trick pony though, I'm already seeing a pattern that mirrors what happened to Weeds and I can see the same thing happening here, just a lot earlier.

CYE worked so well because Larry was a curmudgeon, he had absolutely terrible people skills, and most importantly he always said exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time. None of these things make him unlikeable. Like I said, he's eccentric and he has lousy people skills; plenty of people do and it's often times hysterical. Turning him into a bumbling fool, which about a third of the episodes did, was both counterproductive to the humor and also made him fairly unlikeable. Now that I think about it, when I turned it off was the phone call leading to Cheryl's dumping him (and I fucking hate Cheryl more than any of them anyway). That was just stupidity on his part. By way of comparison, Basil Fawlty shared every one of those qualities I mentioned, but remained perfectly likeable throughout the series and you never really thought to yourself "my God, what an idiot!"

Also, since season 2 of OitNB presumably just started, perhaps spoiler tags are in order for a while.

Sorry. I started a tangent which I have now continued just to point out that I blew off CYE for exactly the same reason as I put OitNB on hold. Carry on.

I can see how that'd make him unlikeable, but I liked him even more because of it. That, and as you said, Cheryl (who, I agree, was the absolute worst) and many of his friends were specifically and obviously created to be the polar opposite; snotty, nose-in-the-air, every synonym and more, which made it all the more hilarious when Larry royally fucked it all up each and every time. But I get ya, I can completely see how that'd just start to become grating after a while; and he definitely started to degrade intellectually. But that's one of the aspects I liked, I truly enjoyed seeing him become just so socially retarded that it was actual-face-palm worthy. It was the opposite for me, I started hating every BUT Larry, especially Cheryl. That's interesting though. Either way I miss the show, but the more I think about it, the more I think it ended perfectly and wouldn't want it to outstay it's welcome, even for me.

Alright, alright, alright; I'll stop derailing.

Also I couldn't agree more that there needs to be more of Alex (forgot the actress' name) and her amazingly voluptuous, Kirby-suckable tits. MM! MR. SKIN HERE I COME!

Halfway through. I think it's just as good as season 1 so far.

I thought 2 started slow - I found the 2nd episode boring as hell, and was thrown by the emphasis on several new characters and the deemphasis on several storylines that dominated Season 1, but it started to pick up again in the middle, and the stretch run was great.

Yeah, Larry is a complete and utter doucher in this show. Poor guy is still shaking off the American Pie series, and he will for the rest of his career.

Maybe that's it, but Jason Biggs seems to have zero range as an actor.  Some of the more emotional scenes with Piper would have been far more impactful with a better actor.

Just finished season 2, and I loved it! I think it's a really good show. The best part about this show is the characters.. even some of the characters you hate, you can somewhat sympathize with them. As much of a nut as Crazy Eyes is, I think she's a good character and I can't help but feel sorry for her. Vee was an excellent antagonist this season, truly intimidating. Awesome stuff, can't wait for Season 3!

Just started this series.  I really was meh about it... not much interest until I got 15 minutes into the first episode..

I'm hooked

:corn
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Exactly how I was. Except I was a bit more hesitant, I stopped for a while at episode 3 and came back to it addicted a while later, oddly enough. I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts once you're finished with S2. I think most are either just 'meh' like me or even more addicted.
