Hyperion, the world's tallest tree.

Quote
The tree was verified as standing 115.55 m (379.1 ft) tall by Stephen Sillett. The tree was found in a remote area of Redwood National and State Parks purchased in 1978. The exact location of the tree has not been revealed to the public for fear that human traffic would upset the ecosystem the tree inhabits. The tree is estimated to contain 530 m3 (18,600 cu ft) of wood and to be roughly 700–800 years old.

That's bad freaking ass.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I've heard that in a tornado (or hurricane), winds can be strong enough to put a 2-by-4 through a tree.  Found a few reasonably interesting pictures of such things.  Not seriously cool, but reasonably interesting.

This one looks more like a 2x8, but at least it's a better quality pic:

But first prize goes to this one: a splinter of wood through a concrete curb:

I don't know enough about physics to understand how this happens, since obviously the concrete is much harder than the wood.  The only think I can think of is that the wood is being impaled through it with so much speed and force that it "doesn't have time to break" as it pokes a hole through.

I'll take a stab at it, but I suspect I'll get shot down by some of the DTF science nerds. You're looking at a tremendous amount of energy being imparted to both surfaces equally. That energy will want to travel away from the point of impact in equal amounts. In the case of the wood and the curb, that means that you had about 6" of cement to absorb that energy as opposed to the length of the board. In this case the back of the curb started to give way while the board was still compressing within its tolerance.

Also, the cement is still stronger than the wood, as evidenced by the splintering that took place. That board was traveling from left to right, and you can see how much of it made it out the other side compared to how much was going in.

The Discworld answer would be something like "it happened so fast that, when the concrete realized that it is in fact harder than wood, and therefore the wood should not be able to pierce the concrete, it already had happened, and everyone had to live with the results."
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

:lol  Basically, yeah!

Awesome!  I love it when it doesn't just look like a rainbow, but more like the entire sky is basically a lens.  I saw this same effect once when we lived in Maryland.  Driving through some pretty hilly terrain, the sun was behind us but also down in a valley as we climbed the hill away from it, so you got about two-thirds of a circle of "rainbow".  Hard to describe, but it was super cool to see.

Yeah, really nice picture but it doesn't actually look anything like that. The colors are way too dramatic. When you go there this is what you actually see.

Nevertheless, nice picture and I'd like to see the other fountains there shot in a similar style. I'll also say that's one of the numerous reasons why Ft. Worth is where you head if you want to spend some time out with a camera. All kinds of wonderful stuff to shoot there. I'm partial to the Japanese Garden, myself.

A friend of mine visited Ha Long Bay and Sapa in Vietnam on holiday. A few days later, her facebook status was a complaint about how heavily post-processed and manipulated most pics of tourist destinations are these days, giving you false expectations and potentially setting you up for disappointment.

I can definitely relate.

Yeah, first thing I thought of when reading that comment was Kandersteg, which looks like it might not be too far away from your picture. Even if your expectations are of one thing, that doesn't mean there isn't still amazing beauty to be found. I really wouldn't need Halong Bay to look like something unEarthly to get off pretty hard on the beauty of it all.

Because this spot always looks exactly like this? Year-round, regardless of time of day or season or weather conditions?

I think it's just a matter of keeping your expectations realistic, and acknowledging that a lot of the pics you are fed by tourism companies and professional photographers have been taken in perfect conditions and then edited until they are an almost hyperbolic representation of that place.

When I research places to travel, I'll actually seek out the best pictures I can find of the place, and hence are probably not "real"; ones that still look good, but show little if any signs of post-processing, so are probably closer to what the place actually looks like; and absolutely terrible pictures, grainy shitty ones taken in far from ideal weather conditions, so you know what you're gonna get if your luck shits on you.

To use Halong Bay as an example:

versus

versus

or even worse,

If you go in having overfed yourself with pictures of the first type, and don't prepare yourself for the possibility that it won't look just like that, unless you luck out and the conditions are absolutely stunning, you're probably not gonna have a good time.

Yeah, not far, it's Lauterbrunnen.  (I had to look up Kandersteg).

Well, here is is with cloud cover.  It was like this last time I visited, and while a bit disappointing, I still found it beautiful.

Those Halong Bay pictures really drive home the point, though.

I think I actually prefer the "worst case" for both of those locations, or at least don't like them any less. I find the overly colourful clear blue skies and green grass pretty boring and uninspiring. I like the reality and atmosphere of the cloudy/dank photos. So to me they're still sticking with cool pictures. :tup
