The 2014 Academy Awards Thread v. Ellen's Universe of Energy
« on: January 16, 2014, 07:34:07 AM »
Hey folks! I woke up at the ass crack of dawn this morning to watch the nominations unveil. I can't believe they announced this at 5:30am...I think Thor needs his beauty sleep. Why does he need to announce the nominees so early?

I guess it's what I get for moving out the LA...where in Orlando, Fl on a Sunday I could roll out of bed at noon and watch football. That was  my perfect Sunday. Now I have to frickin wake up at frickin 10 in the morning. I hear the bars serve some awesome breakfast burritos, but I don't want to have to go ANYWHERE at 10am...on a Sunday

So the first thing that sticks out to me is that EMMA THOMPSON was not nominated for her incredible performance as P.L. Travors in "Saving Mr. Banks." She's gives one of the best performances of the year. She may not have won, but she deserves to be nominated.

Tom Hanks as well. I thought Captain Phillips was one of the best performances of his career. He was also excellent in Saving Mr. Banks.

Pacific Rim OR Man of Steel was not nominated for Visual Effects...but The Lone Ranger and Iron Man 3 were?!? That entire Krypton sequence itself in MOS is a reason to recognize it's F/X. I also wished it got the Original Score nod...but Daft Punk couldn't get it for TRON: Legacy, so NOTHING surprises me.

I'll add more commentary as soon I digest these nominees. But at this point, I'm rooting for Alfonso Cuaron and Gravity

and my future wife, Jennifer Lawrence.

Somebody pointed out to me (and I agree), if anything Colin Farrel should be nominated for supporting before Hanks

I was suprised Monsters University didn't get a nomination

Let's also talk about how every year, period costuming and production design are favored over works of pure imagination. No production design nominations for Pacific Rim or The Hobbit or Monsters University? But recreating 1970s fashion for American Hustle's costume design is some incredible achievement?!? It's a great film but c'mon man!

I've probably seen more of the nominees this year than in many a year.  Just saw "Inside Lllewyn Davis" today and gotta say that it makes total sense that it was nominated for cinematography.  I think it deserved more nominations, because I'd put it above "American Hustle" and "Wolf of Wall Street" for sure as a better overall movie (but "Dallas Buyers Club" beats all of those).  I would add that the music in the movie is fantastic. :tup
