Alright, everyone's in.
Unfortunately I'm going to be pretty busy in the upcoming days, so I'm not exactly sure when the results will be up, I'll keep you guys posted though.

Also, the next round is going to be an open round, so you can start thinking about what you're going to submit now. :)

Surprise, round six results! Sorry this one took so long... :-[

ROUND 6 RESULTS

"Team Lol?" (Lolzeez, ?): Amorphis - Sampo

First thing's first, that intro is freaking awesome. The piano melody is great and the way the full band kicks in is fantastic. It's also got that great "soaring" atmosphere, well fitting for an album with "sky" in the title. This atmosphere is present in the choruses as well, which are also great. The song's got a pretty good flow and a decent amount of variety. The heavier sections like the riff after the second chorus and the slow part with the harsh vocals contrast nicely to the calmer, brighter sections, and nothing feels out of place. The song then wraps up nicely with an incredibly fantastic outro. I got no real complaints, this a really nice song.

Score: 8.5

"The Royalty" (Nekov, Elite): Frost* - Welcome To Nowhere

This one was pretty interesting. The first minute made me think this was going to be an electronic song (which I would not object to at all, fyi), but then the full band crashes in like a goddamn bulldozer, completely out of nowhere. Yeah, that big entrance is pretty damn kickass, I won't lie. So is that riff. I also really like the chorus; it's very powerful and quite catchy, too. Though what really makes this song noteworthy is the range of styles it contains. You've got the aforementioned heavy riff and choruses, the acoustic guitar in the verses, and the quiet electronic/piano sections. That's a good amount of variety for a five minute song, and it all ties together well, not feeling like an odd mishmash of different styles. Again, no real complaints.

Score: 8.5

"The Breakable Dawg & His Elephant" (senecadawg2, elefantStone): Seventh Wonder - Unbreakable

While this song was good, it unfortunately didn't leave much of an impact on me. It's very much pure prog metal, and while the instrumentation is fantastic and there are no specific parts of the song I'd call bad, it just feels a bit generic as far as prog metal is concerned. Especially that lead keyboard. That sound and style is just so overtly prog. :lol One part where the keyboard does work well is the main melody, and the guitar riff backing it up is pretty nice as well. What else is there to talk about? There's lots of solos and technically-proficient playing; the vocalist is good but not particularly noteworthy… Like I said, this is a good song, but I didn't really hear anything special.

Score: 8.0

"Getting All The 'Tang They Want" (jingle.boy, Scorpion): Iron Maiden - Paschendale

Scorpion, you're lucky this was a co-op round and your partner picked such an awesome song. You better get your ass back in here for round seven or you're gonna have a baaaad time. Anyways, Iron Maiden, as I've explained to two of you now, is a band I've heard some individual songs from, but I've never checked out any of their albums in full, which is why they aren't on the banned artists list. Unfortunately, this resulted in two separate submissions of Hallowed Be Thy Name, a song I love and have heard many times. :lol As for this song… I don't think it tops Hallowed Be Thy Name, but fuck, it comes pretty damn close. This is an awesome, awesome song. Where to begin? Well, as to be expected from Iron Maiden, there's some really fantastic riffs, particularly the main one and the one in the middle section of the song. The song's eight and a half minutes long, and it remains constantly energetic and engaging throughout. Great flow, too. There's not a dull moment, it's just a constant stream of awesome riffs and great melodies. Some parts of the song even have strings in the background, and they really add a lot. Damn… I really need to pick up some albums from these guys. You made a fantastic choice, jingle.boy. :) Best team name by far, too. :rollin

Score: 9.0

"Team GobbleGonads" (Lucien, LieLowTheWantedMan): The Storyline - Unchained

You guys didn't give me a team name. Therefore, you shall henceforth be referred to as Team GobbleGonads. :police:
ANYWAYS, onto the song. It sadly falls in to the same category as the Seventh Wonder song I also got this round: while it's good, it's not particularly memorable or grabbing. I've listened to this song about five times now, and I still can't really remember much of it. There aren't any bad sections, the song's just kinda unmemorable and a tad bit generic as far as prog metal is concerned. That main riff is really kickass though, awesome groove. The rest of the song is just good to okay.

Score: 8.0

THE SCORE SO FAR

-senecadawg2: 51
-Nekov: 50.5
-Elite: 50
-elefantStone: 49.5
-?: 49.5
-Scorpion: 49
-Lolzeez: 48
-jingle.boy: 47.5
-LieLowTheWantedMan: 47.5
-Lucien: 46.5

jingle.boy finally makes it out of last place, and Nekov is only half a point away from catching up to senecadawg, with Elite not far behind! Will the king finally be dethroned?

ROUND 7: OPEN ROUND

Nice and simple. You guys should have a good grasp on what I like and don't like by now, so just send me anything you want. Make it good! Only one more round after this one...

Still need one from Elite, and Scorpion if he ever comes back.

Also, this is probably the most consistently-great round so far. Expect a ton of 8.5s.

ROUND 7 RESULTS

elefantStone: Unitopia - Tesla

This song is easily one of the most unique submissions I've got this roulette, and in a good way. It mixes progressive rock, jazz, and what sounds like a ton of other influences in a way that sounds really new to me. The funny thing is, I'm not really a big fan of retro progressive rock or jazz, but I really like this song. Maybe it's the way that it blends styles so well that appeals to me, but whatever the reason is, this song is great. The previously-mentioned blending of styles leads to some interesting instrumentation, and it all fits and is performed well. It's a pretty long song, but it doesn't get boring. The instrumental section that starts a few minutes in is easily the highlight of the song for me, and I've definitely caught myself recently humming the "all parts of the whole" part towards the end. This was incredibly unique-sounding song, and it's executed very well.

Score: 8.5

senecadawg2: Sigur Ros - Svefn-g-englar

While I love ( ), for whatever reason, I haven't bothered to check out any more albums by Sigur Ros. Maybe it's because, while I like post-rock, it's a genre that sounds a bit same-y to me. Anyways, onto the song. Well, it certainly is atmospheric, no surprise there. It's very peaceful, dreamy, and quite beautiful. It feels very restrained; it's a quiet song throughout, and the instrumentation is crafted very carefully to create a soft, ethereal sound, while not being too minimalistic. However, there's quite a few songs on ( ) that I prefer to this one. In fact, the constant softness of this song is probably my main problem with it. Many of the tracks on ( ) have a lot of quiet parts, but build up to a big crescendo or bombastic payoff. This song doesn't really have that, save for a few bars towards the end, after which the song quickly retreats back into the softness. And while this song is certainly emotional, in my opinion it doesn't really come close to songs like Untitled 1 or 3. However, this was still a beautiful song that I'll probably put on when I'm in the mood for something quiet, peaceful and soothing.

Score: 8.0

Nekov: Von Hertzen Brothers - Insomniac

This is a pretty simple song, which is good, because I got a crapton of songs this round close to or over the ten minute mark. :lol The first thing anyone will notice is that riff; it's a damn awesome riff, and that absolutely filthy guitar tone accompanies it well. The vocal lines are quite catchy as well, both for the verses and the chorus. The section after the second chorus is pretty cool, too. And that's basically all I have to say about this one. It's a simple song, and a good one, too.

Score: 8.0

jingle.boy: Yes - Roundabout

Out of all the old-school songs you've sent me in this roulette, this is easily one of the best ones. As I've said before, classic prog isn't one of my favorite genres, but this song was unique-sounding enough to appeal to me, and there's a good amount of positive things I have to say about it. I like the way the acoustic guitar is used; the intro is great and the way it's implemented in the verses works really well. Another highlight is the bass work, which is fantastic and groovy as hell. The song flows pretty well, and there's some really enjoyable sections, like the verses, the part in the middle, and the intro reprise with the atmospheric synth that comes directly after. I've heard a good amount of Yes before (my dad loves them), but this is easily the best song I've heard from them. So congratulations on that!

Score: 8.0

Lucien: The Enid - Tripping The Light Fantastic

This was certainly a pleasant surprise. I mentioned in my write-up for elefantStone's submission that while I'm not a big fan of progressive rock or jazz, the combination of the two seemed to work really well. Likewise, the unique combination of progressive rock and classical music works fantastically in this song, despite me not really being a fan of either genre on their own. Hooray, more unique-sounding stuff! This is a pretty damn great piece of music. The instrument choices and the layering of melodies is fantastic; it's really unlike anything I've ever head before. The calm parts build up to the bombastic payoffs very well, and the melodies are incredibly memorable. It's been proven many times that rock and symphonic music can work together quite well, but this song just takes it to a whole other level.

Score: 8.5

?: Barren Earth - As It Is Written

I can't come up with a good introduction for this write-up, so I'll just say that this song is awesome. It mixes metal with progressive rock in an interesting way; sorta like Opeth, but less heavy. The style of metal kinda feels very old-school, almost Black Sabbath-y, in a way, but it sounds very modern and polished at the same time. The slow, marching groove is really nice, and the riffs and melodies are great, particularly that main synth lead and the riff in the verses. I like how the majority of the vocals are clean; they fit in very well. I love the verses and the choruses, and the song stays interesting throughout. I initially thought the piano break in the middle felt really out-of-place, but it sets up a fantastic instrumental section, so I can't complain. The highlight of the song is easily the outro guitar solo. It ends the song on an amazing note, and leaves you feeling very satisfied. Enjoy your first 9/10. :)

Score: 9.0

Lolzeez: Ne Obliviscaris - Forget Not

If I were to solely judge this song on the first six minutes, it would easily be one of the best submissions of the roulette. The whole first half of the song before the vocals come in is absolutely fantastic. The violin is used really damn well, and it combined with the acoustic guitar create a great wintery, melancholy atmosphere. The song builds up very well, and then the distorted guitars and double bass drum come in, and the transition into the heavier second half of the song is awesome. Sadly, the second half of the song isn't as good. It's not bad by any means, but nothing from it really sticks out, and it feels a bit monotonous and repetitive. However, I'd say the amazing first half more than makes up for it.

Score: 8.5

LieLowTheWantedMan: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Honey Trap Aftermath

Fun fact: this is the only submission you've sent me where I've actually heard of the band before. You almost had a perfect streak! :lol So yeah, I've been interested in this band for a while now, as I love myself some crazy, wacky music. This song certainly delivers in that department; it's quirky and very fun to listen to. It's also groovy as hell, which I like. However, I find myself slightly disappointed. I notice you said that it's one of the band's least quirky songs, and I can sorta feel that. I was hoping for a bit more chaos and some metal elements, which this song doesn't have. On its own, it's a good song, but I think it could have been better.

Score: 8.0

Elite: Protest The Hero - Without Prejudice

Oh hey, it's these guys again. I'd definitely say I like this song a bit more than Sequoia Throne, which I got in round two. My main complaint with that song was that it was all over the place, with very abrupt transitions and barely any song structure. In that regard, this song fares a lot better. It feels a lot more concise, the sections last as long as they should, and it all flows pretty well. I really like the fast tempo; the song is very energetic while being pretty melodic at the same time. The riffs are cool and the vocals are nice… I'm still not sure if these guys are up my alley or not, but this song was pretty cool.

Score: 8.0

Alright, before we begin the final round, I've got a few extra points to award. These are some songs that have either grown on me since I first scored them, or for whatever reason, I thought that the original score was too low. If your submission shows up here, you got an extra .5 points.

Lucien: Haken - Falling Back To Earth

This is the only song I've deducted points from for not fitting the theme of the round at all, so I feel like that's a bit unfair. Plus, you're in last place right now, so I take pity on you. :lol This is a fantastic song, with an epic scope, a good amount of atmosphere, awesome riffs, and a great flow.

Score: 9.0

LieLowTheWantedMan: The Drones - I See Seaweed

I wasn't quite sure what to think of this song when you first submitted it, but it's grown on me, and I think it's the best song you've sent me. Yeah, the loud sections don't last very long and the vocalist sounds funny, but the song is incredibly unique. It's emotional, experimental and theatrical, and those payoffs are just awesome. Besides, you need at least ONE song that's gotten more than an 8.0 :lol

Score: 8.5

Lolzeez: Dir En Grey - Vinushka

Alright, this is the main reason I'm doing this extra points thing. I mentioned in my write-up that the song was still growing on me, and what do you know, now that I've listened to it a bunch of times, I can safely say that this song kicks immense amounts of ass. In fact, it made me check out the whole Oroborus album, and I can't thank you enough for that. Awesome album, awesome song.

Score: 9.0

With that, here are the updated scores going into the final round:

THE SCORE SO FAR

-senecadawg2: 59
-Nekov: 58.5
-?: 58.5
-Elite: 58
-elefantStone: 58
-Lolzeez: 57
-LieLowTheWantedMan: 56
-jingle.boy: 55.5
-Lucien: 55.5
-Scorpion: 49

FINAL ROUND: THE CLOSER

Well, here we are. The eighth and final round. We started this roulette with the opener, now it's time for the closer. For the final round, you must send me a song that's climactic and would be the final song on an album or setlist. Keep in mind, like the first round, your song does not HAVE to be the final song on its respective album, as long as it feels climactic enough.

In addition, there are some special rules for this round:

1: I'm extending the running time limit for submissions from anything under thirteen minutes to anything under twenty minutes. Don't go too crazy though, if I end up with a ton of 16-19 minute songs, it's gonna take forever for me to finalize the results.

2: The score for this round will be DOUBLED. Instead of me scoring your song from 1-10, I will be scoring it from 1-20. As such, this is still anyone's game! Send me your absolute best, folks, as you can't afford to mess this one up.

Alright, that's all! Good luck, and I'll see you for the final results!

Vinushka is an awesome song, I'm glad that it's grown on you. Now I just need to get a respectable score and hope those 4 beneath me don't send anything incredible. I'm getting nervous :caffeine:

Will send soon...
