Empire State of Mind is a great track, I should really pick up more of Jay's stuff.

Alicia Keys really makes the song so much better. The chorus is great and really uplifting.

Really? Because as much as I love the song, her part in the chorus just has this "grating" quality to it. Her solo stuff is much better.

. I'm going to have to check out Madvilliany. I love Madlib and all his shit but haven't heard much by MF Doom.

Do so immediately! At laeast check out the song "Accordian", which is my personal favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpaonSDPw7Y

I have DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince's Greatest Hits CD in my car.  I also have all of their studio albums and a framed poster in my bedroom from the "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" album.

Listening to Immortal Technique's Revolutionary Vol 1 & 2 in preparation for his new albums, and it reminded me how great his music is. His lyrics really make his music so great, just listening to him rap is great. But I noticed that Revolutionary vol. 2 is very heavily inspired by conspiracy theories and politics, I wonder if his new material will continue in that direction. But I hope for more songs like Dance with the Devil and The Poverty of Philosophy.

Yes but geez, anything remotely related to him is like nails on a chalkboard for me now.

Looking forward to Eminem's new record.  I hope it's more of his storytelling side like "Stan" and less of his "I'm killing a girl pregnant with octuplets right now" side.

I'd like less Relapse and more Marshall Mathers LP, though I fear I'll be bitterly disappointed.

Actually, I don't think so.  I think part of the reason he just released "Refill" is because he wanted to get the horror "shock" stuff out of the way so he could go in a more mature direction for Relapse 2, (if he'll still even call it that).  As far as I know, a lot of that stuff was going to wind up on Relapse 2 initially until he pushed it back.  I guess we'll see, though.  If it's more like "Beautiful," Ems verse in "Forever" and "Drop the World" than the rest of Relapse, I'll be extremely happy.

GZA's album Liquid Swords is really growing on me. The 4th Chamber is a fucking awesome track, as is BIBLE. In fact, a lot of 90s rap like Ghostface Killa, Raekwon, and Mobb Deep is growing on me.

Listening to The Blueprint 3.  :hat
I finally heard that the other day and I liked it quite a lot. Though the production sounded terrible, but I don't know if that was because the quality of the files on Spotify was no good, or if it actually sounds like that.

Definitely the files you were listening to. The production is very good.

Though I've haven't yet heard an Hip-Hop album with better production that Dr. Dre's 2001.

For anyone who is interested in some fucking great rap: POS - Never Better

It is a rapper who is heavily influenced by punk bands. He has some really creative beats and lyrics, and he has great flow.

The Beastie Boys are wonderful.

Fix'd. I mean honestly, they greatly helped pave the way for the rap genre, especially for white people. Perhaps you listened to all the wrong songs or something because they are amazing.

The only group I can think of with less overall talent is Brokencyde.  And the Beastie Boys did nothing for the genre of rap other than further dilute the mainstream and give it a bad name.

Bought Wale's new album a few days ago. He sounds "Kanye-lite". Has the same kinda of voice and delivery. Its an ok album. Has a few really great and standout tracks, but its hurt by a lot of letdown tracks.

If you're looking for some great relaxed, dark, and minimal rap then I suggest you check out GZA's album Liquid Swords. It's generally stated that it's the best solo album to spawn from the Wu-Tang Clan. If you decide to check out a few songs by him listen to Duel of the Iron Mic or The 4th Chamber, you will immediately get hooked.

I checked out both those tracks and they're quite good.  However, I do think RZA has the superior verse in The 4th Chamber.  "Camouflage chameleon/ninja's scalin' ya buildin/too late to grab the gun they got your wife and children."

Freakin' badass.
