DTF Rap/Hip Hop thread

Re listening to Nas' Illmatic album, what a masterpiece. Also got a album by Quasimoto called The Unseen, highly recommend it to anyone who likes relaxed hip hop.

I suggest that you check out Atmosphere, Immortal Technique, CunninLynguists, and Snowgoons. They are all great modern rap groups/artists.

Illmatic is soooooo good.  Just gave P.O.S. - Never Better a spin today.  That guy has such great flow, so surprised with that release.  Re- listened to Lupe Fiasco - Food and Liquor and Black Star's self titled today too.  Both incredible albums, and highly recommended if you haven't listened to those.

I'm a big fan of Brother Ali, I'm sure some of you have heard of him. Great lyrics, good flow, and some of the best beats in the business, imo.

(Hopefully) going to see him with Atmosphere at the 9:30 Club this summer.

To list some of my favorites off the top of my head:

Atmosphere
Aesop Rock
GZA/Genius
Wu-Tang Clan
Immortal Technique
MF DOOM
Dalek

All good stuff.

Where's the Jedi-Mind Tricks love...

Fort Minor has some pretty good beats.

K'naan is also fantastic, he has some good lyrics and beats and just good music.

Yeah Eminem's always been one of my favorites. I love Public Enemy but I've lost interest in them over the years. I think I've listened to them a little too much.

WHAT?!?!

The style, the lyricism, the delivery, the beats, they practically carried hip-hop through the 90s.

i just think they're extremely overrated because of the controversy around their deaths.

You guys should really try dälek.  They're this awesome blend of rap and heavy guitars (not mu-metal, not even close), with lots of shoegaze influence.

All of you that have never tried them should try those two songs I linked to. :)

Cash rules everything around me, CREAM get the money. Dollar. Dollar. Bill.

Y'all.

Grandmaster Flash, Wu Tang Clan, B.I.G., Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Jay Z, Outkast (very little, however), UGK, Nas, Coolio, DMX, Common, and yes...T-Pain.

That's who I've been listening to in the hip-hop/rap scene most of my life and till now. Other than that I don't branch out all that much. Grandmaster is still the best, and despite these things called "opinions" (psh  :loser:), he is by far the greatest. I mean really..I can hear it now..

It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under...

For as many rappers as you listed, and as I looked from each one to the next preparing to cringe and make a note to ignore all of your future opinions, I'm pleasantly surprised.   :lol  That's actually not TOO bad of a list (the obvious exception being T-Pain).   :tup

Everyone needs to listen to Chali 2na's solo album (of Jurassic 5). Incredible album. It's called "Fish Outta Water"

The man's got a great voice. To me, he has one of the best voices in all of hip/hop, next to Chuck D

I have been on a hip hop binge lately. I recently have been digging Deltron 3030 (Thanks to Volk9's top50 thread), GZA, Snowgoons, and a few others. Here are some albums I suggest checking out if anyone is looking to get into the genre.

Snowgoons - A Fist in the Thought
GZA - Liquid Swords
P.O.S. - Never Better
Deltron 3030 - S/T
Immortal Technique - Revolutionary Vol. 2
Nas - Illmatic

So far I really only have the entry level artists of this genre so if anyone has any recommendations I would be eager to check them out.

I have listened to Abscence and I really enjoyed it. I was going to check out Dalek's newest but I heard it wasn't that good. I'm going to have to check out Madvilliany. I love Madlib and all his shit but haven't heard much by MF Doom.

Lately, I've found myself really digging:

Deltron 3030 - s/t
Aceyalone - A Book of Human Language
B. Dolan - The Failure/House of Bees Vol. 1
Sage Francis - Human the Death Dance
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons. . .

I was big into Immortal Technique earlier this year, but now I hardly find myself listening to him at all. Shame, because he's one of the best lyricists I've ever heard. I've gotten a lot of hip hop from friends this year, and I keep meaning to check more of it out. Maybe next year.
HOLY MARY MOTHER OF GOD!!!!!  THIS is why LHK is the President of Awesome.

Why is everything you post the best thing ever said?  :lol

LHK is beyond EPIC.

The problem with Technique is his actual music. There is not a whole lot of variety and style behind the production. His strength is that he is amazing at rap and writes some of the best lyrics in the game, but that's all there is to him. Hopefully his new albums will have better production as Revolutionary Vol 2 really was a giant step ahead of Vol 1 in terms of the music.
