The Blue Chips 1 and 2 mix tapes would make a great start.

Listened to MBDTF couple days ago for the first proper time. Freaking awesome. What should I listen to next?

Not sure if serious or trolling, Lolzeez, the hater of Kanye West saying MBDTF is freaking awesome  :lol :lol :lol
And now I own every album from him besides Graduation and that horrible pile of shit 808s and Heartbreak. MBDTF is still my favorite.

Also,I just got Death Grips' The Money Store on vinyl!

Initially I thought it would be strange to seek hip-hop recommendations on a Dream Theater-based forum, but I have had some success on the metal/prog metal side of things, so I figured you all know a thing or too beyond DT.

This is what I'm looking for --

I'll use the term underground, but I don't know if that's an archaic phrase.

I am looking for some hip-hop that is recent, and heavy on the lyrics.   Another silly thing, but I find so much that I hear is not based on lyrical skill but on hooks.

I would also like something that does not have a lot of singing in it.

As a recent example -- had a Dumbfounded album that I listened to recently.  Really liked three or four songs, and almost all of the lyrical content, but way too much singing for my hop hop tastes

I'm usually anti-singing too unless it's old school.  Even Busdriver is singing a lot on his last album.

I agree that mic/lyrical skill is really lacking these days.  But Suga Free's flow is crazy.  Some singing here and there, but he's so good it's easy to overlook it.

RTJ has good flows, but that style of beat is so cliche it annoys me.

I can't believe in a discussion about rap on a rock board, there's no mention of the rap/rock pioneers Urban Dance Squad!

Four words:
DOCTOR STANK IS BACK!!!!!

https://drstank.bandcamp.com/album/stank-of-america

This guy is straight outta Riverside CA, hasn't made much in many years, but his new album is great.  He is a true original...produces himself, makes the beats, and has a crazy flow with tons of personality.  He's one of my favorites.  It's guys like this who make guys like Wayne and Drake sound like garbage to me.  This guy is on a whole other level.

I'm not familiar with Gibbs at all, but I listened to Pinata and his lyrics are really cliche. However, that doesn't stop the album from being pretty great. Probably helps that I love Madlib though.

Honestly, i care more about the beats and production than the vocals/lyrics (as i sample stuff and do my own beats)... great ones can elevate the songs even if the MC is not that good (like Danny Brown when he is in his "annoying mode"... i don't mind because i really like the guy though  :lol)
About the album, my favorites right now are High, Thuggin and Bomb (that intro sample sounds like something from the PSX Megaman X4-6 games )

Agreed. Lyrics can easily take a backseat to me if the productions/beats are great.

And for some reason I actually like Danny Brown's "annoying mode". :lol Not sure why, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one.

For me, it's the opposite, and why I hate most current artists.  Flat monotone voices, some of them barely say any words, some of them can't stay in time.  So annoying.  There's a reason why the 80-90's was the "golden age" of rap, and it wasn't because of the production.

Rap is poetry. Rap is a part of Hip-Hop. The beat influences the rap and vice versa. Hip-Hop is mainly about the message in the rap. Hence why many old artists despise the current style.

I listen for the message and to hear the Rappers thoughts. The beat comes second, which most famous mainstream artists have.

Rap and sampling defines Hip-Hop for me (i prefer the beats though).
Also, mainstream artists don't have beats like something from Madvillainy or Donuts, it's another level.

I don't mind it when older artists use newer beats, they have to keep up with the times.  But I hate the prevalence of these "dirty south" style beats to the point of west coast artists using them.  To me, that's like selling out.

OK, I know I said I don't put music over the vocals, but I'll have to make an exception in this case.  This dude's pretty blah vocally, but DAMN THIS MUSIC IS GOOD!!!  The atmosphere and art are so futuristic.

Drake's dropped a new song called Draft Day.  He should just start rappin a-capella cause he sure can't stick to a beat. :tdwn

Even a prog band from the 70's can rap better than most rap artists today! And the ending is just beautiful.

I picked up the 20th anniversary addition lately, first time hearing the album. Yeah, I still can't get into it. Hopefully with a few more spins it will click with me as well.

My big 4 artists that I follow right now, when it comes to Hip-Hop are:

Macklemore - Though if you haven't heard this song, you might be living under a rock.

Hopsin - About time someone put the modern pop culture generation in its place.

Classified - Canada should be known for this guy, not that douche Drake.

Tech N9ne - Nuff said.

Its definitely a grower.  However, if we're talking Nas, I'd go with God's Son as my number one.
