I highly recommend reading It's Bigger Than Hip-Hop by M.K. Asante, it uses Hip-Hop culture as a vehicle to explore important social and political issues facing the Hip-Hop and Post-Hip-Hop generations.

It's a really great read about how mainstream rap isn't true hip-hop, and it's effects on communities.

Listening to Cancer 4 Cure by El-P. It's fucking AWESOME

The new Killer Mike album has all the beats done by El-P.  It's a fantastic collaboration.  Mike is literate, political, southern, and HARD -- a really interesting combination.  Check out a few tracks:

Big Beast (single)

Heard a few of the singles, but no, haven't listened to it as an album.  Guess I should, though.

I've listened to a few songs from it. So far Clique is the best track that I've heard.

That was fucking awesome, thanks for that. I just listened to the first song but I'm definitely going to check out the rest of his stuff. Quality rapping there.

I've been enjoying a lot of Danger Mouse recently, and some Geto Boys. Haven't really gotten into anyone new lately; still listening to MF Doom a lot. I'm afraid I can't get into much newer rap music, although (and I'm not sure how new or old this is) I enjoyed Drake's 'Successful'. I heard a newer rendition on the radio with Lil Wayne and I don't like it nearly as much as the original with just Drake and the slimmed down lyrics (they added..."hoes")... Either way, good stuff LilOutkast.

All you thugs better not be sleeping on Kendrick Lamar's: good kid, m.A.A.d. city.  Conscious concept rap album that covers all kinds of territory.  Lyrics are great and Kendrick is technically amazing as well.  I am actually teaching the album now in my 12th grade Language Arts classes, and my kids are loving it!

Cool, it is fun to break out of the old dead white guy syndrome and expand the canon of what we consider literature.  I can't imagine not doing it now.

What I've heard... I haven't really liked as much as the first two albums. And I can't quite put my finger on why. Still need more listens though.

DOPE!  Yeah, Kendrick is pretty friggin' awesome.  That album is already one of my fave concept albums of all time.  OF ALL TIME.  So many layers of meaning and complexity.  Just a real work of art.  We could have spent 2 months on it, honestly.  I'm glad you checked it out and liked it.
