Many great names were mentioned, but one is missing: Emmylou Harris. I can't recommend every album from her, but there's a three album sequence that is brilliant:

Wrecking Ball/ Red Dirt Girl/ Stumble into Grace

Wrecking Ball is unbelievable. Produced by Daniel Lanois, Larry Mullen Jr. on drums...

I believe PJ Harvey's "Let England Shake" is one of the most profund, heart-breaking albums ever done...

Kate Bush is a true genius.
"Likely or not, it's a dream that we keep
and at odds with our senses we'll climb
But if faith is the answer, we've already reached it
And if spirit's a sign then it's only a matter of time."

Warpaint!!!  They were love at first listen for me, and quickly became my 2nd favorite band.  Great combination of darkness, shoegaze, indie.  Also a great live jam band, they add a lot of jams to their live songs.   New album should be out in January.

Sixpence None The Richer.  Forget the "Kiss Me" pop stuff, their earlier music is darker and rockin'.  Check out "Musings", "Falling Leaves", "Angeltread", "Love, Salvation, the Fear of Death".
"I don't know nuttin about nuttin" - Marshawn Lynch

The very soul of what was once real music is now lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.

Lots of good ones already listed. I'll throw some I haven't seen. Pretty much each one of these has a totally different style so check them out.

Anneke Van Giersbergen - I'm only really familiar with her work with Devin Townsend (but all of it, Addicted-EpicLoud is amazing).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0YShMFpv7Q
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf4_LB32M6Q

Christine Rhoades - Did some awesome work with Jeff Loomis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQotKmGd0mM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnnxXUVOzgI

Grace Potter - She has an amazing voice IMO (heres a couple killer covers she did with other great artists) has her own band the Nocturnals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paeNnR33i5Q (around the 2:30 mark my jaw hits the floor everytime)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A13tUxH09SI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgc5l9X3Dn4 (edited to add a song of the Nocturnals.. crazy to see how well she sings just stripped down walking through a park) She has some serious pipes (get your mind out of the gutter)

Nikka Costa - Beautiful, soulful voice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh4XoP2rXdM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTMIhlOFgvw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W_-dU9jEZc

Maybe you'll find something in there :)... good stuff throughout the thread already!  :tup

I'll second the Grace Potter recommendation. I love the first three Grace Potter & the Nocturnals albums, especially This Is Somewhere. Haven't gotten around to getting their latest album, but I heard some of the songs during a radio broadcast of one of their recent concerts. Sounded really good but a bit poppy, which isn't surprising given the direction they were going on the third album.

Dalbello - forgotten songwriting goddess from the 80's. I recommend checking her last album from 1996. Some progressive and hard rocking elements. Some might know her from the Queensryche album Rage For Order. The track Gonna Get Close To You is a Dalbello cover.

Leather from Chastain is worth mentioning.

I second Shania Twain. Great pop-rock in the Mutt Lang years.

P!NK - Her Live at Wembley DVD is one of the best rock shows ever (get it get it get it) and she's really a great overall artist.  On-record she's poppy but she really rocks-out her live stuff and I wish I could link something here but it's all official, unless stuff that's aired on TV (ie. MTV Awards, Leno, etc) is ok to post, but I'm not sure so I won't.

Halestorm - Lzzy scares the shit out of me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpJAmlnBxoA

Amaranthe - She sings about half the vox but when she does it's amazing.  Mostly in-your-face energetic music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8lV1To-_fU

Delain - Fairly diverse music, both heavy and gentle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaATQzLr_20

Orianthi - She's also an amazing guitarist.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu1aQvm5MrU

Rihanna - I like the songs where she really sings (California King Bed) and the live stuff she's doing with Nuno (Rock Star).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhBorPm6JjQ

Jennifer Hudson - I remember her doing an interview on Jimmy Fallon and, on-the-spot, standing up and just belting out something accapella, it was beautiful.

It's sad how current pop "singers", and mostly female, are pretty much only doing interviews on talk shows instead of actually performing these days.  Even "old" stars like Mariah Carey won't just sing on-the-spot, they need a few days notice to "warm up" or get their lip sync rig set up.

Nobody recommended Chelsea Wolfe?  :eek

Her music is unlike anyone else's. It has elements of Dream Pop,Folk,Darkwave and a lot of other genres. Here's one of my fav songs off her most recent album. Posting a live recording so people see how beautiful she is.

Technically, not really a female-fronted band since this band has male-female vocals for the most parts, but I suggest Lacuna Coil.

Ugh, really great music but stupid name.  Call me superficial but I hate junk like that.

It's along the same lines as if the band/artist are complete personality-turds (ie. Axel Rose, Oasis) it affects my enjoyment of the music... it shouldn't, but it does.

I haven't gone through the entire thread, and I'm not sure which ones you have already heard (apart from the ones in your OP), but I'll recommend these:

Björk (Electronica/Pop)
Cat Power (Indie Rock/Pop)
Eisley (Indie Rock)
Grimes (Dream Pop)
Kimbra (Pop/Soul)
Laura Stevenson and the Cans (Indie Rock)
Lush (Shoegaze/Dream Pop)
Susanne Sundfør (Electronica/Baroque Pop)
St. Vincent (Pop)

From the Blues side of the tracks may I suggest
