The best one-chord metal riff ever besides Forsaker by Katatonia :2metal: I also love Kevin's keys (surprising, I know) and James performs some of his finest vocals ever. The mellow sections are really great and the atmosphere in them is just as heavy as in the other parts of the song.

Highly appreciated! Maybe the best MP lyrics resist sodomy. And even when Chaos in Progress says that the outro riff in TDEN is the heaviest they have ever done, it's got to be the outro riff here.

One of the first DT songs I heard, and from that moment on I immediately started associating that kind of note progressions (I'm a musician and I can't explain better or talk about modes or whatever  :-[ ) like the puppies on acid riff and Kevin's keys to "the Dream Theater sound".
One of their darkest songs but it has the Awake vibe written all over it. I love it when the first half of the album ends and then we get the *slideCHUGGCHUGGCHUGG....CHUGCHUGCHUG...* and it's like "Oh fuck here we go shit got serious now"  :metal

Great lyrics. My 2 favorite parts are the quiet breakdown in the middle ("let's stare the problem . . .") and the heavy ending.

The mirror is the best example of a proggy song based on a simple riff. One of my favorite songs ever!

What about the The Mirror riff on the Symphony X song "Death of Balance"?  :P I think even MP pointed that out some years ago and that was mistaken for a feud between DT and SX

Almost the same, but my favourite part is "I trust you forgot" just after that. LaBrie absolutely smashes the final word, I used to replay that part over and over again

Yeah I know when I look in a mirror I truly see something special...

..oh dammit you mean the song? Yeah that's awesome too, really unfairly ignored song. Probably my third favorite on Awake (my favorite DT album) behind Scarred and Voices.

The most requested DT song from my 7 and 5.5 year old sons. I leave the AWAKE CD in my car for that reason alone.
I love the song as well...but I love AWAKE period

I'm digging all of these appreciation threads lately, considering that there's at least one thing that I like in every DT song.  :tup

But anyway, The Mirror rocks.  :metal

I really like the accompanying keyboard parts by KM. James does a pretty good job on this one as well. It's also one of the few DT songs to not contain a guitar solo, but it doesn't suffer at all due to that fact.

What about the The Mirror riff on the Symphony X song "Death of Balance"?  :P I think even MP pointed that out some years ago and that was mistaken for a feud between DT and SX

I always thought that Mirror riff at the beginning was fairly similar to the beginning of Metallica's Don't Tread on Me, which is supposedly similar to a song Pantera or Slayer or some other metal band did in the late 80s (cannot remember).  Either way, it is awesome. :metal

The similarity on the sx song is on the riff (which is pretty much the same) and even the rythm and accent changes. And there was a brazilian band that paid homage to both the mirror and tom sawyer on one of their songs

Just such a crushing riff, complimented by Kevin's light keyboard work. Also features some of my favorite harsh vocals ever, courtesy of Mr. LaBrie. If he'd never had the accident MP wouldn't have ever needed to sing as much as he did. There are so many great vocal moments in this song that prove that, especially pre-accident, James certainly was a heavy metal singer. "Trusting in YOOOOOOUUUUUUUU!"

I'd argue that despite James' vocal injury, MP didn't need to sing as much as he did.

I was shocked when I originally discovered that some people didn't love this song.

I had been a fan of the Puppies on Acid riff ever since I bought the LiT home video when it first came out.   And I thought the downtuning made it EVEN BETTER!!

This is my favorite song from Awake, and probably in the top 5 all time. (though I havn't thought about it in a long time)

I'd argue that despite James' vocal injury, MP didn't need to sing as much as he did.

To be honest, I enjoy MP's vocal contributions, but there is NOTHING like an operatic singer singing with an edge. Which is what makes this song so great.

My second favourite from Awake, JLB's performance here is just mindblowing. My favourite part is probably the "mellow" section in the middle.

Awesome, my only critique to that song is that you have to hear Lie to get to the reprise. I'd kill to see it live in the next tour including Lie-outro.

Kick-ass song (Kevin Moore, ladies and gentleman).
There's only 12 notes, do what you want with them.
