What made you become a member at DTF?
« on: June 23, 2013, 02:13:21 PM »
I became a Dream Theater fan, back in the second half of 2001 when I met some guys who were part of our school musical and recommended me some songs and albums. The website had the Scenes from a Memory design. I really liked the Vocalists section, because I started to do a lot with singing, since I was starring in a musical and since I wanted to sing all this DT and Queensr˙che stuff. Martin Dahlberg, a.k.a. Maestro, was such a cool member.
The musicians sub forums disappeared, and it became just a general musicians forum.

Been a fan of Dream Theater since Images and words and was a member of the old forums to chat with like-minded DT fans. I migrated over to this one when the old one died.

I've been getting back into Dream Theater in the end of 2011/beginning of 2012 because for some time after the split I couldn't stand hearing anything theirs/about them, but the thread from there to forum joining is kind of blurry. I don't know why I searched for a new forum to join, but I remember thinking "why don't I look up if DT has official forums? They're my favorite band, after all!" and afterwards I just lurked for a month after I found you guys because you were unbelievably cool and I was stunned at how the "hive mind" had my exact sense of humor + all that wonderful diversity and I was too intimidated by the coolness of this place :mora:

I wanted a place to bitch about the United States Postal Service refusing to deliver my package of Black Clouds and Silver Linings for a few days because they had too many packages from the same distributor and were pissed off.

I joined to chat with fellow DT fans.  I didn't know any DT fans in the town where I grew up (being a town of 20,000 people).  I joined in 2000 when I was in college and had readily accessible internet.
In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.

Found the forums through a search for something Dream Theater related on the internet. I signed up after a few days of lurking because of the people here. This place has the best community on any forum I've seen.

Dream Theater discussion group? The only thing better is if I could find one IRL... like that's ever gonna happen...

I just like to join forums I guess, more to read and more to write. Not that it was random, as I am a DT and music in general fan, but it kinda seemed like a nice extra forum.

I honestly cannot remember how I cam across the old DT.net site. I believe I was looking for the official DT discussion forum and found this place...and did absolutely no posting until the switch to dtforums.org. Even then, I think I lurked for quite a bit. Funny that even on the internet I was shy... Hm. Either way, I fell in love with the community and the fact that it was very...homely. It still is, and despite the fact that many of the founding members have come and gone, there's still plenty of folks here that don't even know I was around and yet I remember them clear as air. It's...strange, to have that feeling of familiarity that others don't feel at all because I was experiencing it through the looking glass, so to speak.

Either way, I'm sure the original intent was to simply discuss some DT album material, whatever album was out at the time (6 degrees, I believe?). It grew to be much more than that.  :heart :police:

Oh man, that's such a long time ago!
I think what happened was that some buffoon on a horseless carriage told me about a musical play band called "Dream Theatre". I mounted my Pennyfarthing and bought the wax cylinder with WDADU on it for a sixpence.

That's how long me joining DTF is ago.

Technically I became a member of DTF because the old DTF became not DTF. :neverusethis:

I was told there was lots of girls here.

You misunderstood. What we said was "we have lots of young virgins". It's not our fault if you read into that wrong.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Remember Kazaa? I was actually ORIGINALLY introduced through that because I searched for...well, there's no way I'm going to remember the exact song but it had the word 'prison' in it, and this came up in the Kazaa que, literally: "PRISON OF GLASS - DREAM THEATRE". And that led to me searching Yahoo (NOT google....bwahaha) for that exact wording and it brought up the forums... Funny how dredging up some memories will open up more. Liquor probably helps...or...does it? I don't know. What the fuck.

When I decided I'd finally had enough trying to get along with MP.com, I looked for a new forum. Not sure why, but I googled "dream theater forums" and not surprisingly this was the first hit. Once I found that there was a P/R subforum here, I pretty much moved in.

Well, I lurked for years but never joined until 2008.   I don't have an answer to why I didn't join earlier.

When Scenes from a Memory came out, the tour was coming to town. I was in love with that disc and wanted to know more.  I thought the splitting of the sites was the most ridiculous and immature drama, and I wanted nothing to do with it, so I stayed away until a few months ago.

My first 'forum' was over at MP's place and I was fairly active in there for a while. I joined here but initially wasn't very involved or active.....and then when the whole 'break up' happened I gravitated to DTF just because the atmosphere over at MP's place was strange to say the least. I started participating here more and more and actually a year or so ago I deleted my facebook account...had the mods at MP's place delete my account and I even asked TempusVox to delete my account here because I was kind of 'fed up' with online junk. I'm very thankful that Tempus told me that he wasn't going to delete my account. I took a good 6 month hiatus and didn't start posting again until I saw a thread KirksNoseHair started on 'self banning'. I commented in there because of the self ban I had enacted. Been fairly active in here I think ever since.
Really enjoy the folks in this place......

I had no clue about message boards a bit over four years ago, but an old boss of mine kept talking about all the funny shit that happened on the Van Halen links, so I went to find a home of my own. Joined Yessfans and got bored out of my mind. Went to my second favorite band, DT, and joined. Within a week, I knew I had come home. :heart

YesFans used to be much, much cooler, like five or six years ago.  But a bunch of the really cool people left, and some of the more dickish people have relentlessly stayed on.  There's still some cool people left, but it's not like it used to be.  It didn't help that Yes took a huge break, and after going years without any new music to dissect, it did get boring, which is why so many people left.

I joined Voices.uk in like late '09. The site was pretty much dead.  I wound up browsing around the web and found this place. :JayOctavarium:
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
