Regarding this round, purely female vocals or can there be male vocals as well?

I didn't even think about it. Let's just go full female.
Time to bring out some obscure prog!

Edit:Shit. That song wasn't all female.  :tdwn

what was it?
Song for Scheherazade by Renaissance.
Edit:I just sent something that's not prog. Hopefully this will work.

RESULTS ROUND 4

Nekov - Forward Shapes - Proclivity
Prog metal, with lots of piano. Production could be better, but it don't mind it that much, just saying. A lovely vocalist, and one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. Nice chorus.
9,1

obscure - Triosphere - Marionette
Heavy song. And a female bassist-vocalist... you can tell I'm into her. She has rather raw voice, but I like it. Excellent drumming here.
9,4

lonestar - Beautiful Sin - Take Me Home
I'm not usually a power metal nut, but this is pretty good. Rather straightforward and in-your-face. I really like the vocalist, but her English pronounciation could be better. I'd rather hear her singing in French or Dutch, whichever is her native language.
8,8

? - Portishead - Roads
Pretty quiet and melancholic song. The music sounds like some background music used in Cold Feet TV series. It could've been slightly shorter though, but quite enjoyable still.
8,1

Scorpion - The Dresden Dolls - Delilah
Oooh yeah  :hat. I guess this had only drums and piano aside vocals (I'm not sure if I heard a bass guitar)? Well this song doesn't need anything more. I got hooked to the story. And I like Amanda's vocals, she uses a big vocal range and dynamics change from almost whispering to more powerful delivery. The use of different vocal styles (not her voice) reminds me of Trent Reznor and Agnete Kjolsrud. Her voice control is just incredible. I can't give anything less than a jackpot.
10

Lolzeez - Fleetwood Mac - Dreams
Quite simple song. Simple 4/4 beat, but it's one of my favourite things in the song, it gives a feeling of going forward. Lovely vocals.
8,9

MoraWintersoul - The Gathering - Saturnine
This song is a bit puzzling. Basically there isn't anything new after 2:10 and the song goes still on for 3 minutes. I'm still bit torn on whether it is good or bad. Weird drum sounds, but I'm starting to like them. I like the chorus.
7,9

WindMaster - Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks
This didn't fit theme, because it was kind of a male/female-duet. But I forgot to update the round info so I let this in. And some of the other submissions featured male backing vocals, but I don't mind.

Anyway, nice poppy song. This apparently was a hit, but I rarely listen to the radio so I had completely missed this  :lol. Nothing special, but it will ring in my head and was pretty good anyway. Cool video  :lol.
8,5

Standings:
obscure 37,1
? 35,9
WindMaster 35,9
lonestar 35,8
MoraWintersoul 35,7
Nekov 35,2
Scorpion 34,3
Lolzeez 33,5

Round 5: And they lived without hope...
Send me something dark. Define it as you want.

Deadline 24th May

I'm having an exam week, but I have only one exam next week. This round might or might not take some time.

School is over and I have plenty of time with my forum duties... bullshit.

Anyway.

ROUND 5 RESULTS

obscure - Ihsahn - The Pain Is Still Mine
Well, this is theatrical, but not over the top... very much. Prog metal with some black metal influences. The vocals are pouring with emotion. Great faster middle section. A very powerful track, but maybe slightly too long.
9

? - Katatonia - The Racing Heart
Not so theatrical, but emotional nevertheless. Nice use of keyboards and electronica. Very good chorus, sounds radio-friendly, but not generic.
9,1

Nekov - Tool - The Grudge
I have clearly been missing out something by never hearing them before  :lol. Slowly growing track, with a strong very rhythm. The energy is released little by little, then it calms down a bit only to come out with a massive surge in the outro (great scream!).
9,8

WindMaster - The Ocean - Demersal: Cognitive Dissonance
The newest song so far, the album has been out for just over a month. And probably the heaviest this round, at least production-wise. Vocals are between growl and clean, they fit the music well. Loving the doomy outro.
9,2

lonestar - THE DEADSTATION. - Drugs for the Pain Inside
Best word to describe this song is: manic. The drummer must be in great physical condition  :lol. The band has rather interesting concept; each album is an episode of fictional TV series and one song is one scene. So far they've released one EP. Interesting us of keyboards and a good vocalist, though I don't like the electronically manipulated parts very much. Hmmm... I wouldn't change the station if this were on  :lol.
9,2

MoraWintersoul - OSI - Kicking
You know, after three very heavy and rather lengthy tracks this feels almost soothing. At first I didn't really like Kev's vocals, but they're growing on me. I've begun to like electronic music, so this suits it well. And maybe for the first time in this roulette I'm singing along. "Don't start telling love is a symphony..."
9

Scorpion - Swallow the Sun - Out of This Gloomy Light
And here is probably the darkest song I've recieved. Very beautiful melodies, but there is one thing I don't like: vocals. No, I don't want to hear this with clean vocals, but I'd rather hear less staccato growls (here it is ROAR-ROAR-ROAR, I prefer ROAAAAR-ROAAAAR-ROAAAAR). The lyrics are very beautiful, but I can't really hear them without reading them simultaneously. Anyway, I don't want to focus on things I don't like, because there are  only little of them. You'll get a high score too.
9

Lolzeez - Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
No sweat, this stuff really needs to be heard! A prog epic with multiple sections, and the longest track in the roulette so far (23:13). Whereas some prog epics don't feel like a one whole song, this works quite well. So far I don't really like Pictures/Lighthouse-movement, but maybe it'll open with more time. I really like the vocalist.
9,5

And I don't usually like dark music that much  :lol.

Standings:
obscure 46,1
WindMaster 45,1
? 45
lonestar 45
Nekov 45
MoraWintersoul 44,7
Scorpion 43,4
Lolzeez 43

So Nem is still rockin' the party, but there's something bubbling under...

Round 6: High voltage!
Send me something energetic, after all this darkness.

Deadline 4th June

And once again:

And one thing of which I have been bitching for some of you individually: please send the submissions to the e-mail address mentioned in the opening post. I don't like it when the subs are scattered around Internet. Thanks!

My PM inbox is starting to fill up and I don't want to delete stuff. Please use the e-mail (ilee.parkkinen@gmail.com), it has worked so far. If the things aren't going to change, sanctions might follow.

Hey, tomorrow I'm going to library to get some music. I'm going to check out some albums from bands I've heard in the roulette so far, but there aren't some of the albums featuring the song submitted, so I need your help. This won't slow the roulette down, because I do my roulette listening at day and CD listening at night.

I found these albums:

Tool - Lateralus
OSI - Free
Verenpisara - Eilinen on kuollut
Kingston Wall - I

But which one of these is better?

Ulver - Wars of the Roses or Blood Inside
Dark Tranquillity - Fiction or We Are the Void

There are plenty of Anathema, but I think I'll pick Weather Systems, because it is an usual sight on various Top 50 album lists.

Okay, there seems to be quite many after all and I got some non-roulette stuff to check so I might save something on later  :lol.

Oh and The Dresden Dolls album (Yes, Virginia...). The guy or gal how has it now relended it  >:(. Guess I listen it from Internet then, but it's at the top on "albums to check online" with NIN's The Fragile.

I haven't listened to Fiction enough yet to say if it's better than We Are the Void, but the latter was my first Dark Tranquillity album and I liked it a lot. A lot of people seem to prefer Fiction though...

Also, the Verenpisara album is called Eilinen on kuollut ;)

A lot of people do prefer Fiction, myself included, and it has some setlist staples and major hits so that would be a fine start.
Speaking of Ulver, I have heard Wars Of The Roses, Shadows Of The Sun and Lyckantropen Themes, and Wars Of The Roses is the weakest of them, though it is still pretty enjoyable. Many Ulver fans say Blood Inside is better than WOTR, but I have been warned that it's slightly inaccessible for the first couple of turns.

Also, Free is a great place to start with OSI, and knowing your tastes, it would probably be better if you picked Judgment or Alternative 4 as your first Anathema album.
