I have no idea why this thread got resurrected... but I'd like to chime in: On Every Street is a VERY underrated album. I think, there are fantastic songs on there, Calling Elvis being one of them. The title track is just utterly beautiful, with its endless buildup (Mark is just a master in building up songs, see Hill Farmers Blues... but what am I saying, Mark Knopfler is just a master in general). Fade To Black, You And Your Friend - do I have to say anything? Amazing songs. Friggin Planet Of New Orleans??? I don't understand why this album is not ranked among Dire Straits' best efforts.
And yeah the sound is so 90s, I love that slim, yet somehow modern (at least more modern than 80s albums) sound. Drums sound mighty. I have been listening to this album since I was 4 and somehow I never knew that Jeff Porcaro (and Manu Katche!) were the one who played those great drum tracks. I should have known
Thanks for making me think about this album again! I'll spin it tonight
