I just noticed that The Killers did a cover of Romeo & Juliet; my girlfriend loves that song! :tup

Any good?

I'll have to check it out, I remember trying to convince my friends to cover it with me in High School, but I couldn't get the main riff down on guitar at that time.

Well they forgot the best part of the song, but overall it's decent.

Which part was it, Ruben, as I'm not very familiar with the original?

Bumping because of Telegraph Road.  Since I first posted in this thread I have picked up the whole discography.  I had Love Over Gold for the longest time and still love it.  However, Making Movies made me want to get the rest of the albums.  :tup

Mark Knopfler was the greatest concert I've ever been to. What an underrated band/musician.

My favorite DS song.  That last verse sums up the despair of a "dying" town.

Telegraph Road is great, but Brothers in Arms takes the cake, for me.

First DS album I bought was Love Over Gold, mainly for Telegraph Road, one of the best driving songs ever. When I first heard Private Investigations, I wasn't so sure on it. It sounded so sparse, with not a lot happening. But it grew on me, and I absolutely love it now. The sparsity gave it a real eerie feeling.

On Every Street is also a great album, the title track and Planet of New Orleans being my favourites.

Telegraph Road is my second favourite song ever.

Mark is releasing his solo album at 16th of March I think. His solo stuff is quite solid, nothing groundbreaking but really nice. Looking forward to this one.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I love Mark too .....I didn't bother with it in the roulette but you might like some stuff by Gaye Delorme.  He's not well known (and played more styles than Mark) but some of his stuff , esp when he sings, sounds very Knopfler-ish. There's some debate about who may have influenced who.

Choice MK solo tracks :

1. Darling Pretty.
2. Sailing to Philadelphia.
3. What it Is.
4. Golden Heart.
5. Boom, Like That.
6. The Car was The One.
7. Cleaning My Gun.
8. Why Aye Man.

There's some debate about who may have influenced who.

This is a bit of a non-sequiter. But Bono's vocal on "Cedars of Lebanon" always reminded me of Knopfler. That not quite singing / not quite talking.

??? - and you've quoted the wrong poster which is very poor forum etiquette  ;D.  I don't understand why it's a non-sequiter to state that two people with some clear similarities in style who came from the same time may have generated some argument about who influenced who.  That's not my opinion - it's fact.    Of course it may all be coincidence but there's been plenty of online  discussion on the topic if you dig deep enough.

Just the bit about who-influenced-who.

Remarking that Bono may have been influenced vocally by Knopfler on Cedars of Lebanon.

If you haven't heard that U2 song - have a listen. Bono's delivery is very Knopfler-esque.

Dire Straits was one of the first bands I became a fan of. In fact Making Movies was the first vinyl I bought.

I still love them but don't listen to them as much as I did. I also like Knopfler's solo work but I think sometimes he could be a bit more rocking.

Apart from the stellar guitar work, I really like MK's singing style. I often hear people saying that he can't/doesn't sing, but I beg to disagree. Sure sometimes it sounds more like talking than singing but he's got a very unique style and he can deliver melodies and moods quite well and it perfectly fits the songs.

I fell in love with Dire Straits back in the early 80s, in the days when MTV was so desperate to fill airtime they played anything, regardless of genre or length, which is why Skateaway at over six minutes and Tunnel of Love at over 8 minutes got a shit ton of airplay. Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitarist and one of the best songwriters in the history of rock and roll, period. Depending on my mood, there's a constant struggle over which album I like better between Making Movies and Love Over Gold, but it's hard to go wrong with any of them.

I've got my copy of Tracker, the newest solo album by Mark, and it's totally awesome. Not really so different from the rest of his solo work, but that's actually the point. I just love what he's doing now, all that bluesy / country vibe. Basil, Lights of Taormina, Beryl and especially Wherever I Go are the highlights from the first two listens, but basically the whole album is just amazing. Got the Kill to Get Crimson / Privateering vibe from it.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Only heard Beryl.

Knopfler has definitely settled into a familiar style.

It reminded me a lot of Sultans of Swing.

Apart from the main riff of course - my favourite thing is that keyboard sound throughout that goes " Zeeeooowwww "

Mark is such an underrated musician. Sailing to Philadelphia is one of my favorite albums ever. I think my most euphoric live music experience was when the heavy guitars kicked in during Speedway at Nazareth. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

No sry, just wishful thinking. From what I can read, Knopfler is quite determined to never reunite the band.
