When did you first listen to Dream Theater?

Going by the latest release when you first listened to them.

Of course there are going to be some conflicts with actual timing, but give it a shot.

Also, post with the first DT album you listened to.

I first listened to them a little after Octavarium came out, but the first album I heard was SFAM then Awake.

SFAM had just came out, but Awake was my first album. I was 10 and the chorus to Voices made me an instant fan forever.

2004, listened to Metropolis, The Spirit Carries On, and As I Am. I was floored, but it would be another 2 years before I became a huge fan.

So, ToT era.

I heard Six Degrees around when Score came out. Of course, my life was changed when the first guitar hit.

03-04 with SFAM. Bought M:2000. Then bought L@B. And then their new album, Octavarium, came out.

I bought Awake & I&W at the same time, but listened to Awake first (attracted to its artwork!)

I chose SDOIT 02, although it was actually very early 03. But it was well before ToT came out, so I went with SDOIT.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Mr. Neccy, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this board is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Summer 2008, when I picked a copy of SDOIT from my local library. I actually had to replay the intro of Glass Prison several times because it was so awesome.  :o
Surely one day they'll work out it would be simpler and far more legal just to suckle on each others' teats in a kind of wonderful 69 of eternal calcium goodness.

I am the 89-91 Vote.

I received WDADU that had been taped onto/over a Prince-Purple Rain tape. But it was missing the last two songs which I didn't know about until after I & W.

Funny...there was no real internet at the time...and no coverage or knowledge of this band..I remember wandering through HMV and seeing Images and Words on the shelf (after hearing the band had lost its singer and that was that)....I nearly fainted.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

I also got into DT during the WDaDU days. Picked up the album after reading a review of the album in RIP! magazine (June of 89).
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Well, I'm kinda a "child of Octavarium" :P that is, I listened to DT once after Six Degrees IIRC but I was too young back then and it didn't really interest me.

97-98 in my dad's car. The album (or rather song) was Voices. Hooked by the guitar solo :metal and I wished it to go on forever. Would become a fan only 10 years later in 2007 . I was too young to digest the awesomeness of DT and I didn't know it was DT at that time :lol.

SFAM around 2001.  It was blind buy from Amazon.com.   Immediately went and got I&W and Awake shortly thereafter.

Around '06, when I joined ultimate-guitar and heard about them all the time.
I keep having a vision of DT getting on a late night talk show like Conan or Letterman and playing Wither.  That would be 7 different kinds of fabulous.

The first three kinds being sex, nachos, and mud wrestling, right?

'94.  Saw Awake at a used CD store for $8.  I remembered hearing PMU & Another Day when they were released as singles, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I went to see Iron Maiden at the Ritz in New York City on June 8, 1992. We got there early, so we’d be close to the stage. That also meant we’d have to stand there for some lame opening band.
Well, Dream Theater hit the stage and completely changed my musical life. When I got home, I grabbed Images And Words as soon as I could, and played the shit out of it for the next couple of years.

My first impressions of Dream Theater that night..
1. The Drummer is incredible.
2. The Bass Player is insane!

My avatar is a picture of the Ritz’s marquee that I took that afternoon.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

SDOIT had released months before, and I had seen "The Glass Prison - Dream Theatre" all over Kazaa at the time, that was at the end of '02. After that I went out and bought, literally the next day, all of their albums prior to and including SDOIT and have been keeping up and addicted to them since that time.

Heard them in 99 with "Through Her Eyes" on the radio (srsly).  Liked the song, but never heard it or found out who the band was.

Fast forward to 2006, my friend gives me Scenes and that piano melody sounds awfully familiar, followed by Octavarium, ACoS, and Score.  Thats when I actually started LISTENING to them, so 2006.
