Live At The Marquee Appreciation
« on: January 12, 2013, 05:00:42 PM »
Since I haven't seen any threads appreciating DT's first live release, I figured I would start one!

The main reason I'm bringing this up now is because I've finally gotten around to compiling my EU and JP versions of the album, as well as UAGM from the same show, to compile a 9-track version of the album that runs just under an hour long:
1. Metropolis Pt. 1   9:35
2. A Fortune in Lies   5:46
3. Under a Glass Moon   7:26
4. Surrounded      6:01
5. Bombay Vindaloo   6:56
6. Another Day      4:37
7. Another Hand      2:13
8. The Killing Hand   8:33
9. Pull Me Under   8:22
=59:29

The show is still missing "Ytsejam (w/drum solo), "Take The Time", and the encore of "Wait For Sleep"/"Learning To Live", which would be AWESOME to have from the show, in high quality, considering the WFS/LTL duo wasn't represented on Live In Tokyo (of which I made an audio-rip of the DVD to make a sweet CD of THAT show).

Anyways, listening to it again, JLB absolutely OWNS and his higher range is intense and insane! There's an interesting rawness and youthfulness to these performances, and even though it's not a whole show, it's a great look into the band just after two albums. I'm only listening through "Metropolis" right now, but maybe I'll come back and post more thoughts as I listen through the album over the next hour.

-Marc.

Great album. 5 killer renditions of their earlier stuff, and 1 epic jam that shows just how awesome Dream Theater was and is.
Perhaps you should ask bosk to reverse the "e" and "a" in the second half of your user name.

This album is all about The Killing Hand. Stunning performance.

I'd also like to see DT do something like Bombay Vindaloo again during this tour - come up with an idea and work on it as the tour progresses.

Ib4, Vocals were dubbed in the studio so this does not represent JLB's true performance...bla bla bla comments.

Anyways, this show is completely amazing. TKH is is the highlight for me.

Quoted for absolute, spotless and universal truth. All of this.

Even though the vocal performance was rerecorded right after Live In Tokyo, this is still one of the absolute highlights of James's career (I still think that of all released Live Albums, his performance on LiT is stronger).

In b4 "the vocals were dubbed, but we don't care, because the vocals are f'ing awesome and JLB sounded the same live anyway". :tup :metal

Great little live album, especially notable for the only versions of any WDADU song worth listening to.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I have heard the original vocals, they are almost just as good (especially in TKH).

Even disregarding the fact that they were dubbed, most of them were probably one take.  So yeah, not as cool as doing it with the band and 1000 or so excited fans in front of you in a hot, smokey club, but still an impressive feat nonetheless.

What abou the impossibru triggered drums????

I think pound for pound, LATM is the best DT live album. I really love that glassy tone on JP's guitar.

Bass is mixed quite low and sounds kinda flubby on the Metropolis break. But performance wise its so energy!

Could be that it's not quite as exhaustive a tracklist insofaras its like an hours listening time and does give you a nice little nugget of DT live. Rather than the slogathon that their other live releases are.

Having said that, I'd love a full on release of the whole show. Wasn't it out in '93? 20 year anniversary this year?

Be a nice one to stick out on ytsejam label maybe as a first release?

I still think it's DT's best live album, both sonically and for capturing the atmosphere of a live show. I'd love to see a proper release of the whole show, or at least a longer portion of it.

This and OIALT are the only DT live albums I listen to.  The others make for great videos.  But the first two live albums have an energy that can't be beat.  It really comes out in the audio.

Amazing performance, especially on A Fortune in Lies. I've never liked the studio version of that song, but this LATM version is better than 2/3 of the DT catalog.

I have the import version that I found in a record store at the mall back in 1997.  It doesn't include UAGM or AD but still paid 20 bucks for it.  Worth every penny.  Great live recording.

Couldn't agree more. Don't forget that they actually did several different instrumental songs that were somewhat improvised. IIRC, there were 4 done during the European leg of the tour when they did Bombay Vindaloo, and before that leg and after there were other instrumental songs (Moon Bubbles, Slow Motion, the groove-based instrumental from May 15-16, Barfbag and the extended jam following TLF for the summer US and Japanese legs). Even if they were to do one different one during each leg of the tour, it still would be great and those could be compiled for some sort of Ytsejam release.

FYI, you have the European version of LatM. The Japanese version has Another Day instead of Surrounded, and neither has UaGM. UaGM appeared as one of the tracks on the CD that came with the first edition of the Lifting Shadows biography.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Yes! I always felt that the band should have released a compilation of their best improvised efforts. There is already more than enough material to make a mindblowinc CD (hell, maybe even a double CD!).

You and me both.  I generally do not listen to live albums, but I've listened to this one quite a bit over the years.  When I do my DT mp3 CDs for my car, I almost always include the live versions of A Fortune in Lies and The Killing Hand from it, and Bombay Vindaloo is a given. :metal

I'll never understand the re-recorded vocals argument, he didn't do it on the night and what not. HE STILL DID IT. For those sounds to come out of a human mouth is insane, this is the go-to album for anyone who doubts LaBrie's quality. And yeah, The Killing Hand is incredible, the definite highlight.

I realise I'm not really adding much to the thread that hasn't already been said, but I felt I should say something.
